A recent battle in EVE Online brought the cost of in-game warfare to new heights by incurring losses of 23 trillion ISK. EVE Online is one of the internet’s most involved online experiences, simulating a deep and complex sci-fi galaxy with an in-depth economy and large-scale conflicts between in-game factions. The sheer scope of EVE Online can make it quite daunting for newcomers, but thousands of fans have deeply enjoyed getting enmeshed in it.

EVE Online has a proud reputation for PvP battles on an unfathomable scale. The intricacies of the game and its economy mean that dedicated players can invest in titanic capital starships with real-world value upwards of thousands of dollars. These massive ships ally with player factions that are massive enough to simulate real-world political forces, and a lot of players are willing to devote their time and loyalty to the cause. Back in October, the game broke two records for online PvP conflict. The fourteen hour engagement took the Guinness World Record for largest number of participants at 8,825 players and the record for peak concurrent participants at 6,557 unique characters.

Now the online space simulator is breaking even more records following the recent Massacre of M2-XFE. As EVE Online news site the New Eden Post elaborates, the Massacre of M2-XFE saw the record for Titans destroyed in a single conflict. Titans are the largest type of spaceship in the game, and are known for sporting devastatingly powerful Doomsday Device weapons. The Massacre of M2-XFE saw no less than 251 Titans destroyed, decimating the previous record of 75. These unprecedented losses resulted in 23.6 trillion ISK lost, the equivalent of $340,000 USD in the real world.

People who aren’t familiar with EVE Online will likely balk at the cataclysmic cost of this battle, but this is really the heart of what EVE Online is all about. Fans are very familiar with the titanic battles that make up EVE Online, to the point that some major factions actually had to call a ceasefire during the Christmas season. Dedicated internet denizens can find a wealth of war stories from EVE Online, each more outlandish than the last.

When one things of large-scale MMORPGs, one tends to think of games like World of Warcraft or Final Fantasy XIV. EVE Online is a much less conventional example of a titanic online experience, but it’s no less significant, and it’s clearly got a very dedicated player base. The developer clearly has big plans for the game, and is on record hoping that it will outlive everyone playing it now. With battles like these, even if EVE Online isn’t online in fifty years or so, it will certainly leave a legacy worth remembering for generations to come.
