Even Punisher Cant Take Down Wolverines Arch Nemesis

One of the most ferocious villains Wolverine has ever faced is his arch-rival Sabretooth, a threat that is difficult for even the nearly immortal and vicious Wolverine to defeat, so when the Punisher went up against the X-Men villain, he didn’t stand a chance. The paths of these two killers crossed while the Punisher was on a job investigating a murder, and Sabretooth is the prime suspect. Not only is the Punisher no match for Sabretooth on his own, but he can’t take down Wolverine’s arch-nemesis even with the help of Spider-Man.

In Spider-Man, Punisher, Sabretooth: Designer Genes by Terry Havanagh and Scott McDaniel, Spider-Man is investigating some unsavory activity at a Roxxon laboratory while the Punisher is looking into a cause of death someone found ripped to shreds in an alley. Sabertooth, simultaneously, is loose in New York hunting a Roxxon scientist and brutally killing anyone who gets in his way. Spider-Man follows the scientist Sabretooth is hunting, and the Punisher follows the trail of blood Sabretooth leaves behind him, resulting in all three coming to a head in an explosive way.

Upon seeing Sabretooth, Punisher immediately shoots to kill as he does with every one of his victims, an attack Sabretooth easily deflects and issues an attack of his own. Spider-Man tries to capture Sabretooth while also keeping the Punisher from killing the villain, something the Punisher soon learns he couldn’t do even if he tried. During the fight, the Punisher shoots Sabretooth with a shotgun right in the chest, a blow that actually injures Wolverine’s nemesis but only for a short time. Sabretooth slinks off to allow his body to heal then he is back in action moments later, taking down the vigilantes and escaping.

The three have another battle later in the issue, giving the Punisher another chance to kill Sabretooth once and for all, a prospect that Sabretooth might as well have laughed at. In the end, Sabretooth is able to kill the scientist he was after because that scientist was using Sabretooth’s genes for the Roxxon Corporation. Ironically, if Sabretooth had not killed him then he would have blown up the section of the building Spider-Man and Punisher were in, potentially killing them.

The Punisher’s inability to kill Sabretooth ends up saving his life, but the reality is he wouldn’t have been able to kill Wolverine’s arch-enemy no matter what. The Punisher primarily uses firearms to dispatch his enemies, a method that is usually proficient as he is known for taking down street-level criminals. Sabretooth has a healing factor that rivals Wolverine, taking him only moments to recover from a gunshot wound no matter the caliber as shown in this issue. While Spider-Man’s interference didn’t help him kill Sabretooth, the Punisher can’t take down Wolverine’s arch-nemesis.
