Every Avengers Age of Ultron Deleted Scene (& Why They Were Cut)

Avengers: Age of Ultron introduced a lot of the plot points that played out towards the end of the Infinity Saga, but it also had several other scenes that would’ve foreshadowed other subsequent events, as well as, character moments that didn’t make the cut. On the heels of the success of 2012’s The Avengers, director Joss Whedon was brought back to helm Marvel Studios’ second ensemble project which re-assembled Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and added new members, emphasizing the evolving nature of the team.

While Age of Ultron was a box office success for Marvel Studios, it wasn’t the critical darling that its predecessor was. The film had pacing and plot issues, with its overall narrative was deemed too convoluted. It suffered from the MCU’s tendencies to cram a lot of storylines in a single project to set up future endeavors — something that Iron Man 2 also suffered from. Ultron was also a massive letdown in terms of villains; granted that the franchise wasn’t known for its bad guys (particularly at that time), he was still a disappointment following Loki who’s both fun and menacing in The Avengers.

As most of the foreshadowing in Age of Ultron paid off through more recent MCU projects, the film is better perceived now than when it was first released in 2015. However, aside from what made it onto the big screen with the final cut of the movie, it also had a lot of scrapped scenes that were left on the editing room floor — some of them would’ve arguably made the movie better, others not so much.

Pietro & Wanda Argue About Tony Stark

Every Avengers Age of Ultron Deleted Scene (& Why They Were Cut)

In the scene, Wanda Maximoff criticizes Pietro for stealing because it could get him killed. Pietro retorts by questioning Wanda’s decision to spare Tony Stark’s life following their initial encounter during the HYDRA base raid at the start of Age of Ultron. Before Wanda could answer, they were distracted by the news that Ultron was waiting for them at the church. It’s clear Pietro wanted to physically hurt Tony during their first contact as seen in the movie, but Wanda somehow knew manipulating his mind was more detrimental to him as it made him more erratic and paranoid. The scene is a bit redundant for both the plot and characterization, which is likely why it was cut.

Wolfgang von Strucker’s Death

Every Avengers Age of Ultron Deleted Scene (& Why They Were Cut)

Introduced during Captain America: The Winter Soldier mid-credits scene, Wolfgang von Strucker was poised to be a major player in Age of Ultron. As the leader of the remaining HYDRA cell which had the Mind Stone, he oversaw the HYDRA experimentations on the Maximoff twins. After the Avengers’ raid, he was jailed and in a deleted scene, Ultron breaks into the facility and kills him there. In the film, Strucker was never seen again following the opening action set-piece. Since there’s really nothing that came out of his final conversation that would move the narrative forward. it was edited out. For what it’s worth, the scene didn’t even show Ultron on camera as Strucker’s murder was just implied. In fact, it was only shown during Captain America and Maria Hill’s conversation about what happened which was also deleted.

War Machine Checks In With The Team

In connection with the information that Steve received about Strucker, Avengers: Age of Ultron leads into War Machine calling the team in the Avengers tower to briefs them about how every country on the planet is fighting off a cyber attack on the heels of Ultron’s rampage. He informs them War Machine is being deployed to the Middle East in case a war breaks out. Black Widow asks him to relay any pertinent information to them if he hears anything, while Tony offered additional security protocols for Rhodey’s suit for an additional layer of protection. While this sequence further emphasized how dire the situation is as the Avengers comes up with a plan to contain Ultron, removing it from the cut doesn’t have any major impact on the movie’s narrative, although it does explain where Rhodey is during the events of the film.

Hulk’s African Village Rampage

Every Avengers Age of Ultron Deleted Scene (& Why They Were Cut)

Scarlet Witch’s mind control on Bruce Banner resulted in the Hulk going on a rampage in Age of Ultron. This forced Tony to call on the Hulkbuster to prevent the green monster from causing more damage, but the Whedon film originally had the transformation of the character last much longer. In a deleted scene, the struggling Bruce is scene slowly becoming green. Before he reached Johannesburg, the Hulk first wreaked havoc in an African village, destroying several houses and scaring its dwellers. The sequence was ultimately cut because Hulk and Tony’s battle that debuted the Hulkbuster was long enough on its own. In any case, the destruction in the city essentially accomplished what this bit is trying to convey.

Black Widow and the Hulk’s Conversation

Every Avengers Age of Ultron Deleted Scene (& Why They Were Cut)

Age of Ultron began the unexpected romance between Natasha Romanoff and Bruce Banner. In a deleted scene while the Avengers seek refuge at Clint Barton’s farm, the pair had a much longer conversation about the potential of running away together. Natasha was convinced they could live peacefully together, but Bruce, traumatized by his most recent rampage, was skeptical. He was worried that he will never really have a sense of normalcy given how prone he is to transformation. This would’ve been a great breather moment in the film as the heroes slowed down and planned out their next move. However, since the romance between Black Widow and Hulk barely made sense anyway, cutting this didn’t significantly change the film’s story.

Thor’s Cave Scene

In an effort to find answers about the mysteries surrounding Ultron’s plans, Thor reaches out to Erik Selvig and together they go to the Water of Sights. There, the God of Thunder is possessed by a Norn who reveals that Ultron has the Mind Stone — one of the six Infinity Stones which supposedly “cannot be joined nor kept apart.” This scene is obviously meant to set up the culmination of the Infinity Saga in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame — something Marvel Studios supposedly mandated to be worked in Age of Ultron. The scene was removed in favor of a different version of the same concept.

Sokovians Hate The Avengers

Every Avengers Age of Ultron Deleted Scene (& Why They Were Cut)

Another deleted scene reveals the Avengers arriving in Sokovia after they figured out Ultron’s final plan. Upon the landing of the Quinjet, Captain America grabs his headpiece, but upon seeing a graffiti of himself being dubbed as a fascist, he decides to leave it in the aircraft. Steve Rogers then asked the Maximoff twins to wake up everyone in their houses in preparation for the evacuation of the vicinity. As Pietro and Wanda go off, Hawkeye also notices the wall illustration and pokes fun at Captain America saying that the Sokovian’s art of him is “not bad.” Admittedly, this would’ve been an effective moment to establish just how much the Sokovians despise the Avengers further legitimizing Baron Zemo’s plans in Captain America: Civil War. Given the villain’s motivation was the death of his family in the aftermath of the heroes’ fight against Ultron, it emphasizes that even before that, Sokovians saw the Avengers in a bad light. However, while it would have benefitted Zemo’s Civil War story (planned or not), including it in the Age of Ultron’s theatrical cut would’ve slowed down the pacing of the film as it begins the third-act battle.

Quicksilver Survives

Every Avengers Age of Ultron Deleted Scene (& Why They Were Cut)

Whedon revealed that they did shoot a scene where Quicksilver survived the Battle of Sokovia just in case Disney and Marvel Studios overruled his decision to kill the character. The character died during the heat of the battle as he blocked the bullets that were supposed to hit Hawkeye instead. Like his sister, Quicksilver joins Vision, War Machine, and Falcon as they make up the new Avengers in the team’s bigger facility in upstate New York at the end of Age of Ultron. The sequence wasn’t used because Whedon’s decision with regard to the character’s fate was kept.

Captain Marvel Tease

Long before Brie Larson was cast as Captain Marvel, Marvel Studios planned to tease the debut of Carol Danvers in the MCU. In an alternate ending shot for Avengers: Age of Ultron, the new Avengers includes a blonde-haired woman who was supposed to be a stand-in for the heroine. The idea sounds great now that Carol Danvers is already an established character in the franchise, however, back then, it made little sense to include her in the film since she didn’t have anything to do with its narrative. If anything, featuring her was meant to rouse a reaction from the public as the cameo would’ve certainly started conversations ab0ut her identity. But for a film that’s already criticized for prioritizing the future, it’s best that this version of the scene wasn’t used.
