WandaVision season 1 came and went without an appearance by Mephisto, leaving many fan theories inaccurate; here is everything viewers thought was Mephisto during the show. In the lead-up to Marvel Studios’ first Disney+ series, fans continued to question who or what WandaVision’s villain could be. With WandaVision setting up Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and other pieces of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s future, the common belief was that the show’s villain would be a major threat pulling strings in the shadows.

Although several Marvel villains were theorized to be involved in WandaVision, Mephisto was undeniably the most popular suggestion. Fans became convinced that the demon and ruler of “Hell” would show up in the Disney+ show in some form. This was partially due to the comic history between Mephisto and Scarlet Witch. The source material connected Mephisto to Wanda Maximoff’s twins by having them be created with fragments of his soul, which Mephisto later absorbed and caused the disappearance of Billy and Tommy. Many expected a similar connection to be made in the MCU that would result in Mephisto’s devilish form appearing at some point in WandaVision.

However, WandaVision officially ended without any appearance by Mephisto. While there were some possible teases like the twins being referred to as “devil spawn,” the story evolved to confirm Agatha Harkness was the “villain” all along – in addition to Scarlet Witch’s villainy being teased. The appearance of the Darkhold also might suggest Chthon will ultimately be involved. But, there weren’t any definitive connections to Mephisto in WandaVision, and that came as a surprise to many considering the number of theories he was involved in. Not only did fans believe Mephisto would appear later in the show, but many theorized Mephisto appeared in a different form or was referenced throughout the show.

Agatha’s Bunny Señor Scratchy

Oddly enough, one element of WandaVision that received a great deal of attention from fans was Agatha’s bunny. Back when she was just known as “Agnes,” the information that her bunny’s name was Señor Scratchy made many fans curious. Some wondered if this was a sign that Agnes was Agatha Harkness since her son was named Nicholas Scratch in the comics. Scratch even worked for Mephisto at a time in his comic history. It was theorized that Nicholas Scratch was turned into a bunny by Mephisto, but another popular theory was that Marvel’s devil was the rabbit all along.

Fans looked for many reasons to tie Agnes to Mephisto early on, but there was an extra reason to suggest Mephisto was a bunny in disguise. A pseudonym for the devil in the real world is “Mister Scratch” and that detail brought Marvel fans to Mephisto. His inconspicuous new look could’ve been a way to get Billy and Tommy to get comfortable around Mephisto before he had to reclaim their souls for his own. Ultimately, Agatha’s bunny Señor Scratchy proved to be nothing more than a bunny that will eat an occasional insect.

Agatha’s Husband Ralph

Before WandaVision revealed the identity of Ralph, many suspected Agatha’s mysterious husband was Mephisto. Throughout the early episodes of the series, Agatha repeatedly mentioned her husband Ralph but he never appeared. The fact that Agatha and WandaVision continued to draw attention to Ralph without showing him drove fans crazy with theories on who he could be. And with most agreeing that Mephisto had to be involved in the series, it didn’t take long for Ralph and Mephisto to be connected. Of course, this was proven to be way off the mark. The Ralph that Agatha kept referencing was Ralph Bohner, who was just another Westview resident as far as we know.

Fake Pietro

Speaking of Ralph Bohner, the puppet of Agatha’s originally entered WandaVision claiming to be Wanda’s long-lost brother Pietro Maximoff aka Quicksilver. The casting of Evan Peters sparked several theories about this Quicksilver being a hint towards the multiverse since he played the mutant in Fox’s X-Men franchise. But, many other theories suggested this wasn’t the real Quicksilver from Fox’s franchise and rather a reference to it played by Mephisto. If Mephisto was trying to get close to Wanda or help push her over the edge, posing as her dead brother would’ve been a great way to do just that. There were also those pushing for this theory to be true so it meant more of Evan Peters in the MCU. His roles in American Horror Story and other projects prove he could be a terrifying villain, and someone like Mephisto would’ve been right up his ally.

Dottie

Dottie was a possible Mephisto in disguise too. Emma Caulfield-Jones’ character was described early on as the most powerful figure in Westview. If Mephisto was hiding among the town’s residents, it would make sense for him to have a similarly prominent role and influence. Agnes even warned Wanda early on that Dottie was the one who she had to impress. Dottie was also in charge of the talent show that included a chant that this was “for the children.” Due to Mephisto’s connections to Wanda’s children and the fact that she suddenly appeared to be pregnant after the talent show was over, it was thought that the devilish villain was using Dottie’s power to nudge Scarlet Witch in the direction he wanted. In the end, Dottie was revealed to be just another Westview resident named Sarah Proctor.

A Cicada

One of the more obscure parts of WandaVision that was momentarily considered a Mephisto tease came near the end of episode 7. Wanda went into Agnes’ creepy house and the show briefly put the focus on a cicada crawling on the curtains. This might not signal a connection to Mephisto right away for most, but some fans went back to the character’s comic history for a left-field theory. Mephisto first appeared as a fly in the comics, and even though WandaVision’s bug is clearly a cicada instead, that didn’t stop the theories. This could’ve been a great Easter egg if it was paid off, but instead it serves as a good reminder that fan theories can often go well beyond the realm of possibility.

Director Hayward

SWORD’s acting director Tyler Hayward was also the subject of some Mephisto theories. It became clear as WandaVision progressed that Hayward was an antagonist who knew much more than he should. Hayward hated superheroes and Scarlet Witch, but most of his actions to try and stop her only resulted in her power growing or the Hex expanding. Hayward even attempted to get Wanda to bring Vision back to life. While it was shown later on this was part of Hayward’s plan to get White Vision online, there was a time when his actions and motivations could’ve lined up with Mephisto. And with fans grasping at straws for a last-second Mephisto reveal, Hayward was one of the biggest characters in WandaVision who could’ve fit the bill as the show’s secretly powerful and deceptive villain.
