In the saturated market of animated movies made for young children, two of the most notable standout franchises are Blue Sky’s Ice Age series and the Despicable Me movies from Illumination. Both have developed extensive fanbases over the years thanks to their easygoing comedy and zany adventure stories but which is considered the best in the eyes of critics?

To best chart the reaction to both movie franchises over the years, let’s look at each movie and their respective scores on review aggregate site Metacritic to see which ones rank highest overall.

9 Ice Age: Collision Course (34)

The latest Ice Age movie performed the worst with both critics and general audiences at the box office, becoming the least profitable movie of the franchise and seeming to end the series on a somewhat forgettable note.

The now-vast collection of main characters faces a world-ending meteorite as well as some typically sitcom-ish family drama but audiences appeared to have mostly moved on from the then-15-year-old franchise.

8 Despicable Me 3 (49)

Whilst not as big a success with critics as the previous movies, Despicable Me 3 was another billion-dollar box office hit for Illumination and clearly indicates that the franchise still has plenty of mileage left.

Introducing the long lost brother of main character Gru, and a new villain voiced by South Park co-creator Trey Parker, the main attraction of the movie was still the Minions and their plentiful screentime no doubt had a large impact on the movie’s success despite a growing backlash against them which still appears to be irrelevant in their face of their global popularity.

7 Ice Age: Continental Drift (49)

Sharing a just-below-medium score of 49 with the third Despicable Me movie is the fourth Ice Age movie which, whilst continuing the franchise’s decline in critical rankings, maintained the box office success of the previous movies.

Taking a more nautically-themed approach, the main group of animals finds themselves pitted against Peter Dinklage’s iceberg pirate Captain Gutt while also adding Jennifer Lopez as a main cast member.

6 Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (50)

Declining in critical rankings, but still increasing in box office success, the third Ice Age movie utilized advancements in technology and became the first 20th Century Fox movie to be released in modern 3D, beating even James Cameron’s Avatar to the punch.

Dawn of the Dinosaurs became not only the highest-grossing movie of the Ice Age franchise but also the highest-grossing movie of Blue Sky Studios’ entire history, despite being one of the worst-reviewed.

5 Minions (56)

A standalone origin story of sorts for the nonsensical Minions that quickly progressed from the beloved mascots of the original Despicable Me movie to being the franchise’s main selling point and then into a cultural phenomenon within themselves.

Though often cited as one of the worst movies to pass the $1 billion mark at the global box office, if not the worst, the immense success of Minions speaks for itself and a sequel titled, Minions: The Rise of Gru, is set to be the franchise’s next entry.

4 Ice Age: The Meltdown (58)

The first Ice Age sequel was similarly successful to the original movie with critics but a much larger hit with general audiences, beginning the franchise on a road of ever-increasing box office returns until finally hitting its nadir with the fifth movie a decade later.

Bringing back the key characters and voice actors of the original movie, while making more long-lasting additions to the core cast, The Meltdown delivered a lot of the same comedy and it appears to be what audiences were looking for.

3 Ice Age (60)

In the eyes of critics, the Ice Age franchise never really surpassed its original movie and the same opinion may be shared by a number of fans also.

Its story, about a group of prehistoric animals coming together to help get a human baby back to its people as an ice age dawns around them, seems remarkably straightforward by the standards of animated kids movies today and that was perhaps true back in 2002 also. This, in tandem with its then-cutting-edge computer animation, earning it a nomination for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars.

2 Despicable Me 2 (62)

Getting very close to the billion-dollar success of the following Minions movie and third Despicable Me movie, the first sequel in the franchise was an enormous success at the box office with critics mostly responding with positivity too.

Despicable Me 2 clearly identified what fans reacted so well towards in the original movie and amped it up for the sequel, securing the title on its road to becoming the highest-grossing animated movie franchise of all time.

1 Despicable Me (72)

The original Despicable Me earned a level of adoration for a Western animated kids movie rarely seen outside of Pixar’s always-impressive back catalog and remains the most highly-rated entry in the franchise amongst critics.

Whether it was the story or the animation or the comedic styling of the movie that caused its breakthrough success seems almost irrelevant now in the face of its far-reaching cultural impact but it will be interesting to see if the franchise can ever top the original movie’s score.
