The Marvel Cinematic Universe has included several Star Wars references and Easter eggs over the years in the movies and Disney+ TV shows.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is filled with references to the Star Wars franchise, and here are all of them that have occurred through Phase 4. Even though the MCU and Star Wars are both owned by Disney, the two massively popular franchises are not connected. George Lucas’ creation exists in a completely different galaxy than the MCU, but that hasn’t stopped Marvel Studios from constantly referencing the galaxy far, far away.

Nearly 30 years after Lucas released Star Wars in theaters, Kevin Feige has been the main man behind shaping the MCU and growing it to become the biggest movie franchise of all time. While Feige draws heavily upon the decades of comics at his disposal, it is also quite clear that he and everyone else at Marvel Studios are quite big fans of Star Wars. This can be seen with Iron Man director and Happy Hogan actor Jon Favreau creating The Mandalorian, and Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi agreeing to helm a future Star Wars film. The connection between Marvel’s creatives and their love for Star Wars has also led to plenty of references to it in the MCU.

Since Marvel Studios has been making movies and TV shows for over a decade now, there is a lot of MCU content at this point. Each film or series is packed with references to previous and future MCU productions, but they are also usually filled with other pop culture references. Star Wars is the clear favorite franchise to reference, as multiple MCU movies and shows have included Star Wars Easter eggs. While that creates some intriguing questions about how the Star Wars universe exists within the MCU and any differences it might have, that hasn’t stopped Marvel from including a long list of references.

Marvel’s Empire Strikes Back Hand Loss Tributes

One of the biggest recurring references to Star Wars in the MCU is seeing characters lose a hand. This was popularized during Phase 2 as a tribute to Luke Skywalker losing his hand in The Empire Strikes Back. The trend started in Iron Man 3 when Aldrich Killian’s hand was cut off by Iron Man during the climactic battle. Thor: The Dark World made this reference during its third act as well. It was there that Thor’s hand was cut off as part of Loki’s fake betrayal. Fans then saw Bucky Barnes lose his arm in Captain America: The Winter Soldier as part of his transformation into the titular Winter Soldier. Guardians of the Galaxy went on to include two such references, as Gamora chopped off Groot’s arm during their first encounter and Nebula later severed her own limb so she could escape.

The MCU’s Star Wars lost hand references continued throughout Phase 2 and even into Phase 4. Ulysses Klaue lost his hand in Avengers: Age of Ultron when he first met the killer AI. Yellowjacket was the latest MCU character to lose a hand in Ant-Man, although his happened quite differently. His entire arm disappeared/shrunk as he was crushed to subatomic size. Yellowjacket seemed to be the recipient of the MCU’s final Empire Strikes Back lost hand reference for quite some time. However, Phase 4 brought the tribute back with Loki, as Alligator Loki bit off President Loki’s hand in the Disney+ series.

Spider-Man’s Star Wars Toys

When it comes to referencing Star Wars in the MCU, Peter Parker might be the biggest fan of them all. He’s responsible for several Easter eggs related to the galaxy far, far away. This is best illustrated with the collection of Star Wars toys Peter has. His interest in the movies led him to want to build the LEGO Death Star with Ned Leeds in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Peter’s collection of Star Wars merchandise grew in Spider-Man: Far From Home. It was in the sequel that a TIE Fighter toy can also be seen on a shelf in his room. Meanwhile, the deleted opening scene of Peter preparing for the European trip included a part where Peter went to sell various toys he owned, including one of Lobot, Lando Calrissian’s aide on Cloud City who first appeared in The Empire Strikes Back.

Empire Strikes Back Is A Really Old Movie

Before his collection of Star Wars merchandise was known to fans, the first sign of Spider-Man’s fandom for the galaxy far, far away came in Captain America: Civil War. As Team Iron Man and Team Captain America battled in a German airport, the revelation that Scott Lang could become Giant-Man looked like a turning point in the fight. Baffled with how to stop Giant-Man, Spider-Man chimed in by recalling a sequence from “that really old movie, The Empire Strikes Back.” While Peter curiously doesn’t call AT-ATs or Hoth by name, it sure seems like he’s a bigger fan than he let’s on in this instance. Peter’s Star Wars interests even led to Nick Fury saying in Spider-Man: Far From Home that he wouldn’t understand his William Shakespeare quote because it wasn’t from Lucas’ franchise.

Captain America Wants To Watch Star Wars

The MCU also referenced Star Wars in Captain America: The Winter Soldier as part of Steve Rogers’ list. Since Steve was frozen for nearly 70 years after crashing Red Skull’s plane in 1945, he began keeping a list of things people told him he needed to learn about. While Sam Wilson recommends Marvin Gaye’s Troubleman soundtrack, someone else told him to check out Star Wars (and Star Trek). If Steve ever made it to the prequels, it could be quite confusing whenever Mace Windu shows up and looks like a younger Nick Fury though.

X-Wing In Marvel’s What If

The first season of Marvel’s What If…? included a few more intriguing Star Wars references, such as the appearance of an X-wing. This Easter egg came in What If…? episode 2 when T’Challa Star-Lord was facing off against The Collector. As T’Challa ran through The Collector’s vast collection, he entered a room filled with different spaceships. This included MCU ships like the Nova Corps’ Star Blaster, but eagle-eyed viewers also spotted an X-wing sitting nearby, raising questions about how Star Wars and the MCU could be tied together through the multiverse.

Mustafar Shown In Marvel’s What If

The multiverse ties between Star Wars and the MCU continued in Marvel’s What If…? with episode 8, when a glimpse of Mustafar was shown. This came when The Watcher and Ultron were battling throughout the multiverse. At one point, they crash through a world that looks exactly like Mustafar, the lava planet used as the centerpiece of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith’s ending. Although Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi can’t be seen in the middle of a lightsaber duel on the planet, this certainly looks like Mustafar that The Watcher and Ultron pass through. If so, it is the best evidence that Star Wars and the MCU are linked through the multiverse.
