Disney has several upcoming animated projects — here’s what the 2021 to 2022 slate looks like. Disney has found incredible success in live-action properties over the years. With Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox, Lucasfilm, and their deals with Sony, Disney has been unstoppable. Several of the highest-grossing properties of all time, such as Star Wars, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Avatar, and the X-Men, are owned by Disney now. On top of that, Pixar’s animated franchises like Frozen and Toy Story contribute to Disney’s undying success, with original films like Coco and Soul also receiving critical praise and an impressive performance at the box office.
While Disney hasn’t had a completely spotless streak of critical successes when it comes to animated movies over the last couple of years, the House of Mouse still dominates the box office any time one of their films is released. Frozen II smashed box office records like its predecessor, while Spies in Disguise and Onward were met with a lukewarm reception. The COVID-19 pandemic forced Disney to rethink their plans, which affected their earnings by a considerable margin but also helped Disney boost the Disney+ streaming service. Soul and Raya and the Last Dragon demonstrated Disney can succeed even through tough circumstances and gave audiences a taste of what Disney and Pixar have for the near future.
From original titles to a surprising prequel, Disney is ready to tackle a new era of filmmaking with several animated projects. Feature-length sequels to established properties like Frozen and The Incredibles are far on the horizon (Monsters Inc. is getting an upcoming series titled Monsters at Work) but Disney’s upcoming animated movies also seem very promising. Luca: June 18, 2021
Pixar’s next big project, Luca, follows the whimsical story of two sea creatures from a secret underwater world that transform into human boys when they leave the water. The film retains its original June 18, 2021 release date. However, the coming-of-age fantasy was originally planned to have a worldwide theatrical release. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Disney opted to release the 3D-animated movie exclusively on Disney+. Luca will feature groundbreaking effects and animation techniques that are sure to keep viewers aching for more similar movies.
Ron’s Gone Wrong: October 22, 2021
Through Disney’s newly acquired 20th Century Studios, Locksmith Animation presents Ron’s Gone Wrong. The 3D-animated film sees a shy middle-schooler named Barney embarking on an emotional adventure with his malfunctioning robot, Ron. The movie will explore the age of social media and its effects on friendship. The movie’s original February 26, 2021 release date changed to April 23, 2021, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and finally settled on October 22, 2021.
Encanto: November 24, 2021
Set in the picturesque Colombian mountains, Encanto focuses on the Madrigals, a family who lives in their magical home of Encanto. The first trailer featured two essential symbols of Colombian culture: the yellow butterflies from Gabriel García Marquez’s novel One Hundred Years of Solitude and an electrifying rendition of the song “Colombia Tierra Querida,” which promise to honor the history, culture, and beauty of the South American country. Brooklyn Nine-Nine actor Stephanie Beatriz stars as the voice of Mirabel Madrigal and the theatrical release date is set as November 24, 2021.
Turning Red: March 11, 2022
Directed by Bao director Domee Shi, Pixar’s Turning Red will tell the story of Mei Lee, a teenage girl who turns into a giant, fluffy, red panda whenever she gets too excited. It will be a coming-of-age story that explores the most awkward and unintentionally hilarious years of adolescence. Celebrating Pixar’s 25th feature film, Turning Red has a worldwide theatrical release date of March 11, 2022.
Lightyear: June 17, 2022
One unexpected installment in the Toy Story franchise is Lightyear, a prequel movie that reveals the in-story inspiration of the Buzz Lightyear toy line. Despite Toy Story 3’s emotional and seemingly conclusive finale, Toy Story 4 showed that the adventures of Woody, Buzz, Jessie, and their friends were far from over. The fourth installment ended with Woody leaving to forge his own journey. But instead of exploring what challenges Woody may face or what the rest of the toys will do without their cowboy friend, Pixar chose to treat Toy Story fans with the real, flesh-and-bone test pilot who went “to infinity and beyond.”
Tim Allen has voiced Buzz since the first Toy Story installment, but Captain America actor Chris Evans will voice the titular character in Lightyear — a choice that suggests the prequel will be a more action-packed and superhero-like adventure than the previous movies if Evans’ popularity as the Avengers hero is anything to go by. Lightyear likely won’t tie into the plot of the Toy Story movies save for the question of how the Buzz Lightyear toyline came to be. It has a theatrical release date of June 17, 2022.
Night at the Museum: Kahmunrah Rises Again: TBC
20th Century Fox’s Night at the Museum trilogy is planned to continue with the animated movie Night at the Museum: Kahmunrah Rises Again. The CGI-animated film will follow the son of Ben Stiller’s Larry Daley struggling with the duty of being a watchman like his father. The movie is expected to release on Disney+ in late 2021 or early 2022 and will feature many returning characters from the original live-action trilogy.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: TBC
Despite the success of the books, the previous four Diary of a Wimpy Kid live-action movies have failed to capture the magic of the original story or captivate audiences and critics. 20th Century Fox has had plans for an animated release for a long time, and following Disney’s acquisition of Fox, the project has solidified as an animated feature expected to release in 2021 or 2022.
Other Upcoming Disney and Pixar Animated Movies
Bob’s Burgers: The Movie has been in development since 2017. Its original July 17, 2020 release date was removed from Fox’s release schedule before Disney announced a new April 9, 2021 release. However, this date was later removed. Updates about the project remain under wraps. Disney also has some release dates without a specific project attached to them. These include November 23, 2022; November 22, 2023; and June 16, 2023. The animated movies Disney might plan on premiering on these dates could be sequels to beloved titles, but given Disney’s recent focus on original stories, it’s likely that more brand-new titles will keep innovating the world of animation — one of these could even be a Pixar movie starring a transgender character.
