There are a lot of Pixar movies on the way in the early 2020s. Following the release of Luca, the future of Pixar looks bright. The beloved animated studio looks to be entering a new phase. Back in 1995, the studio completely revolutionized animation in Hollywood with the release of Toy Story, the industry’s first computer-animated feature film. While the incredible technical achievement was well worth the hype and praise, it certainly helped matters that Toy Story was also an incredibly successful movie. It was the highest-grossing film domestically in the year of its release and earned an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay. Audiences and critics were impressed with Toy Story’s well-rounded narrative and characters, establishing the studio as a major player in the business.
Since the first Toy Story, Pixar has gone on to become one of the most prolific companies in the film industry. The executives and creatives continue to reach the incredibly high bar they set for themselves at the very beginning; over 20 films later, Pixar has grossed more than $13 billion at the worldwide box office and has won nine Best Animated Feature Oscars. It goes without saying that they are an integral part of Disney’s ever-growing reach, and under the leadership of new CCO Pete Docter, the company has plenty of upcoming projects that will hopefully delight fans. After an influx of sequels, Pixar is looking to continue developing more original films in the future. Soul and, most recently, Luca — despite having been released solely to Disney+ instead of theaters — prove that the studio still has a spark left and it doesn’t need to rely solely on sequels and recycled ideas to forge a forward path.
Looking ahead, Pixar has quite a few animated films headed to theaters (now that they’re starting to fully open in many locations). Onward was the last of Pixar’s movies to receive a theatrical release before the COVID-19 pandemic shut down productions for several months and closed theaters. The effects of the pandemic are still being felt, with the last two Pixar features foregoing on a theatrical release altogether, with Soul and Luca being made available to stream without even the additional $30 price tag that comes with Disney+’s Premier Access. For now, its future films are slated to be released in theaters, and with many of Disney’s properties, such as the MCU movies, meeting their theatrical release dates with success, there’s no reason to think that the Pixar films won’t do the same. Here’s a list of every Pixar film coming out over the next couple of years.
Turning Red – March 11, 2022
With Turning Red, Domee Shi will be directing her first feature film following the phenomenal success of her Pixar short Bao. Turning Red follows the 13-year-old Mei Lee as she struggles with adolescence and feeling comfortable in her own skin. That is slightly more complicated for Mei than it is for many teens as she discovers that whenever she experiences a strong emotion she turns into a giant red panda. Her parents had never told her of the family trait and are extremely concerned about how people will react if they learn Mei’s secret. While the premise is a fantasy one, it is likely to be relatable to a lot of children and teens who are struggling with their own coming-of-age experiences.
Lightyear – June 17, 2022
No, this is not an origin story about Buzz Lightyear, the space ranger from Toy Story and Woody’s best friend. Rather, Lightyear will be a sci-fi 3D animated adventure depicting the story of the “real” Buzz Lightyear, the person who inspired the action figure version of the astronaut fans have all grown to love over the course of four Toy Story films and beyond. The movie itself will be set in the same Pixar universe as Toy Story, with Buzz Lightyear being voiced by Chris Evans, with the film being directed by Finding Dory’s Angus MacLane. If nothing else, Lightyear should be an interesting take on the well-known namesake, a story within a story that will likely include some new revelations. Likely, Lightyear will fix Toy Story 4’s failure to honor Buzz, as the character was significantly dumbed down in his most recent appearance.
Other Upcoming Pixar Films
As well as Turning Red and Lightyear, Pixar has three additional films announced with release dates. Unfortunately, no details about titles, plots, directors, or casts have been released yet. However, the dates show the scope of Pixar’s plan through to the summer of 2024 as the announced dates are June 16, 2023, March 1, 2024, and finally June 14, 2024. This release schedule that means while 2022 will see two new theatrical releases of Pixar films, 2023 will only have one release before Pixar returns to the two release-a-year model in 2024. Disney’s recent box office numbers have already shown that people are willing to return to the theater for big new releases like these; however, there is still some apprehension related to the COVID-19 pandemic and some viewers will likely still continue to wait for movies to hit streaming before they see them. Hopefully, but the time that Pixar animation releases Turning Red in March 2023, moviegoers will have less to worry about with regards to seeing films in crowded theaters.
