Numerous Zack Snyder movies have either been declined or heavily altered during the director’s relationship with Warner Bros. 2021 has been a very interesting year for Snyder as a filmmaker with the release of both Zack Snyder’s Justice League and Army of the Dead. The former has made history by way of the most unusual and downright game-changing circumstances of its release, while the latter represents the beginning of Snyder’s working relationship with Netflix, as well as chapter one of a development franchise.

Save for Dawn of the Dead, all of Snyder’s pre-Army of the Dead movies were produced with Warner Bros, but their relationship has become much less harmonious in the past year. Snyder has gone as far as to describe Warner Bros. as “aggressively anti-Snyder” with respect to the release of his version of Justice League and the plans Snyder had for its two sequels. Warner Bros. has also repeatedly signaled a strong disinterest in pulling Snyder’s blueprint for the franchise out of the freezer, despite loud and persistent calls from the director’s fanbase for that to happen.

In any case, both Zack Snyder’s Justice League and Army of the Dead have been very well-received, while the two also represent polar opposites of the creative freedom Snyder has been given in his career. Snyder essentially got to do whatever he wanted with Army of the Dead, while the Snyder Cut no longer needs any introduction in the epic struggle it went through to see the light of day. While the scale of the Snyder Cut is truly something all its own, at Warner Bros, Snyder dealt with significant edits and pushback fairly regularly in his work with Warner Bros. Here are the Zack Snyder movies that were either turned down or significantly changed by Warner Bros.

Alterations To Snyder’s Greenlit Movies

Few filmmakers today are as notorious for their director’s cuts as Zack Snyder is. Though his remake of Dawn of the Dead was with Universal Pictures, the majority of the “Snyder Cuts” have come from his collaborations with Warner Bros. 2009’s Watchmen boasts not one but two longer versions with the movie’s extended cut and the Black Freighter Edition, though Snyder describes the former as his preferred version. Snyder has also spoken of a “Ga’hoole Cut” of his 2010 animated movie Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole. Snyder’s 2011 film Sucker Punch marks the point where Snyder has said he began to encounter significant studio opposition, with the version released in theaters being trimmed down for a PG-13 rating. While an extended cut has been released with 18 minutes of additional footage and an R-rating, Snyder has said that he hopes for his full director’s cut of Sucker Punch to one day be released.

2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice also had a half hour’s worth of footage chopped out for its theatrical release, which was subsequently restored later that year in the movie’s Ultimate Edition. Of course, no Zack Snyder movie was subject to more infamous changes than Justice League, with an extensively reshot version hitting theaters in 2017. On May 20th, 2020, those efforts finally paid off when it was announced that the film would arrive on HBO Max as Zack Snyder’s Justice League in 2021, with Snyder also getting to shoot a few additional scenes for the film (though he still had to swap the planned appearance of Wayne T. Carr as Green Lantern for Martian Manhunter at WB’s request.)

Third 300 Movie

Though Snyder made his feature directorial debut with 2004’s Dawn of the Dead, his 2006 adaptation of Frank Miller’s graphic novel 300 was his real breakout as a filmmaker. With its over-the-top bombast and insane visual style, which frequently directly replicated panels from the graphic novel, 300 was a breakout hit in 2006, and was eventually follow-up by the 2014 sequel 300: Rise of an Empire, with Noam Murro directing and Snyder co-writing and producing. Snyder also recently revealed that 300 could have continued from there.

In an interview with Playlist, Snyder said that he was asked to pen a third 300 film by Warner Bros. during the COVID-19 pandemic. Snyder initially conceived of the film as focusing on Alexander the Great and a romance between him and Hephaestion. Snyder later re-titled the film Blood and Ashes, but it ultimately failed to receive the greenlight from Warner Bros.

Army Of The Dead

Snyder’s latest movie, the zombie-heist movie Army of the Dead, originally entered development at Warner Bros. However, as Snyder explained in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, “They didn’t want to spend that kind of money on a zombie movie, or just didn’t take it that seriously”. After the movie had spent over a decade in development hell, Warner Bros. sold the property off to Netflix in 2019, bringing Snyder onboard to direct yet another zombie movie.

Before Army of the Dead even hit Netflix on May 21st, 2021, the streamer already began unfolding plans to build a franchise from it. Matthias Schweighöfer directs and stars in the upcoming prequel Army of Thieves, focused upon his Army of the Dead character Dieter, while an anime-style prequel series Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas is also on the way. Though it took a long time for Army of the Dead to get rolling, it’s one of the declined Zack Snyder projects to eventually be brought to life, albeit through a different studio.

Justice League 2 and 3

The Snyder Cut of Justice League has been the subject of many columns by itself, what with its historic path to being realized after the last-minute reshoots and thrown-together revamping the film was given ahead of its first release in November of 2017. At the time, Snyder’s departure from the film and the DCEU effectively cancelled the planned Justice League 2 and Justice League 3. The release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League has led to a significant revival in interest in the two films, with significant details about their respective stories being revealed by Snyder and laid out on a whiteboard collection in an AT&T exhibit in early 2021.

Despite this, Warner Bros. has remained adamant in their stance of the Snyder Cut being the end of Snyder’s DC films. The film is reportedly seen as “a storytelling cul-de-sac” by WB executives, and Warner Bros. CEO Ann Sarnoff has also described it as the end of Snyder’s DC trilogy. As far as Warner Bros. is concerned, Snyder’s plans for the Justice League sequels will not be revived, but like the Snyder Cut before it, fans continue to want the Snyder universe restored.

The Atom

Zack Snyder intended to craft a five-movie arc centered on Superman consisting of Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, and a Justice League trilogy. However, spin-offs and parallel stories focused on individual characters were still in the cards, such as Ben Affleck’s planned solo Batman movie. One of these could have been focused on Ryan Choi aka The Atom, played in Zack Snyder’s Justice League by Zheng Kai.

Snyder has said that he pitched Warner Bros. on the idea of doing an Atom spin-off set in China with a Chinese cast. Despite not playing a direct role in the defeat of Steppenwolf in the movie, the Snyder Cut nevertheless sets Choi up to become The Atom, with Choi being appointed as STAR Labs head of nanotechnology at the end of the movie. Nevertheless, as with the Justice League sequels, Warner Bros. turned down the Atom spin-off.

With Snyder now building a new franchise from Army of the Dead with Netflix, along with Zack Snyder’s Justice League finally being released, it brings his career up to this point and his work with Warner Bros. into sharper focus. Snyder has long been a polarizing filmmaker, to be sure, but the following he’s accrued over the years is undeniable, while his two 2021 movies have been received quite well. In point of fact, if the reception of Zack Snyder’s Justice League and Army of the Dead are proof of anything, it’s that Zack Snyder, as a filmmaker, is better off being left alone.
