Everything Everywhere vs Doctor Strange 2 Which Multiverse Movie Is Superior

The following contains spoilers for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and Everything Everywhere All at Once, which are both in theaters.

One of the biggest trends in Hollywood at present is the concept of the multiverse. DC’s films are focusing on various worlds with the upcoming Flash movie, while the Marvel Cinematic Universe is presently unraveling the mind-bending Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. However, it’s not limited to superhero movies: Everything Everywhere All at Once has Michelle Yeoh’s Evelyn Wang explore alternate realities in order to stop her tyrannical daughter.

The latter’s been winning over fans and critics while pulling impressive numbers for A24 at the box office. Given how similar it is in concept to Multiverse of Madness, it makes sense to dissect both to truly figure out which is the better multiverse journey.

Doctor Strange 2’s Multiverse Is a Rollicking Story of Grief

In Multiverse of Madness, Wanda Maximoff gets corrupted by the Darkhold, embracing her dark side as the Scarlet Witch. As such, she hunts America Chavez across various realities to harness America’s portal-opening abilities and find an Earth where she can be a mom to her twin sons, Billy and Tommy. It caps Wanda’s tale of loss, starting with losing her parents and brother, then Vision, and lastly, her sons born in the Westview anomaly. Given she also died in The Snap, Wanda had a lot of trauma to process.

She’s been weaponized most of her life, and with the multiverse already fraying after the events of Loki, Strange had to save America from an innocent death while ensuring the fabric of space and time wasn’t damaged further, especially after he cracked the multiverse open in Spider-Man: No Way Home. It led to him and America seeking out other Stranges and allies, which taught them that consequences matter in the MCU.

Everything Everywhere’s Multiverse Is About Generational Trauma

Much like Encanto and Turning Red, Everything Everywhere spoke to generational trauma and teens struggling to live up to parental expectations. Evelyn’s daughter Joy became evil in the Alpha universe after that world’s Evelyn forced her to harness world-jumping abilities. As such, this entity, now known as Jobu Tupaki, started killing her family across many Earths out of revenge for being oppressed.

The unsuspecting main Evelyn was then forced to level up by visiting various worlds, learning about love, relinquishing control, and equality — all things she needed to understand her gay daughter better. This turned Evelyn into a warrior to stop Jobu from destroying all of reality. What was interesting was Evelyn slowly realized she was the architect of Jobu’s pain. Just like how an irresponsible Strange and the Avengers left Wanda to her own devices when she clearly needed mental help, Evelyn left a vulnerable Jobu thinking violence and murder was the only answer.

Doctor Strange 2 Has the Spectacle, but Everything Everywhere Has the Heart

Now, this isn’t to knock Multiverse of Madness because it’s selfless how Strange embarks on his heroic trip and risks his life. He went in blind and, through protecting America, realized he needed to change. He let go of Christine and a bunch of emotional baggage holding him back. America didn’t just make him a better person, though — she also showed Wanda that she’d become a monster, causing Wanda to end her crusade and, seemingly, her life.

But the problem is much of the film was predictable, had narrative holes, and, on various Earths, there wasn’t much nuance. It was more about cameos, variants and shock factors, with Strange using MacGuffins to stop Wanda — in other words, the typical comic book formula. Conversely, Everything Everywhere spent personal time on each world, giving Evelyn an intimate lesson on her flaws. This allowed more insight into the film’s broken, lonely characters, detailing more of the human condition. Evelyn learned about LGBT acceptance, experienced a world where she understood how negligent she was to her husband, and reflected on how her own dad hurt her emotionally.

To top it off, these worlds (per the hot dog finger Earth) didn’t take themselves too seriously. They blended action and comedy while still embodying existential dread in a way that topped Wanda’s single-minded search for her boys. Ultimately, Jobu realized that the perfect home didn’t exist, which is why she wanted to end everything. This allowed Evelyn to teach her daughter about hope, a valuable lesson Wanda didn’t get to learn. It made Wanda’s ending bleaker compared to the Wangs, who realized they could get a sliver of paradise, but it’d take hard work. Thus, this streamlined, character-driven approach resonated better than the spectacle of the MCU, where the pain was limited to one person, making Wanda an unfair villain.

To determine which is better for yourself, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Everything Everywhere All at Once are currently playing in theaters.
