Everything We Know About LeBron James Space Jam 2

Last Updated: April 30, 2020

Production on Space Jam 2, the long-awaited follow-up to 1996’s Michael Jordan-starring Space Jam, is officially wrapped, and here’s everything we know so far. NBA star LeBron James will appear alongside the legendary Looney Tunes is the upcoming sequel. James first voiced interest in a Space Jam sequel back in 2012. Now, the project is finally coming together.

The original Space Jam, a star vehicle for Jordan, featured the NBA player as a fictional version of himself who was brought into the Looney Tunes’ animated world so that he could help them beat a group of aliens who were threatening to enslave them as performers for a theme park. James’ version of Space Jam could feature a similar premise (although that hasn’t been confirmed yet) and it could feature an interesting switch if rumors Lola Bunny will take over as the leading Looney Tune over the popular Bugs Bunny are true. What is clear is James wants to recreate the magic of the 1990s film for a new generation – a very exciting idea, to be sure.

Space Jam 2’s release date is still quite a ways away, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a considerable amount of confirmed information about the film floating around on the internet. Compiled all in one place, here’s everything we know about Space Jam 2 (so far).

Space Jam 2 Release Date

Space Jam 2 releases on July 16, 2021. The release date arrives during the summer movie season peak, which means Warner Bros. expects it to be a huge summer hit. By the time Space Jam 2 arrives in theaters, it will be competing with the Uncharted movie and Venom 2. Arriving shortly after Space Jam 2 is Jungle Cruise, which, along with any scheduled Disney live-action remakes or MCU Phase 4 films, will put the pressure on Space Jam 2 to perform well at the box office.

Space Jam 2 Director Is Malcolm D. Lee

When Space Jam 2 was officially announced back in 2016, Star Trek Beyond director Justin Lin was attached to direct. As pre-production on the film has gone on, Lin departed the project. It was then reported in August 2018 that Terence Nance would direct Space Jam 2. The changed again midway through production, with Girls Trip’s Malcolm D. Lee stepping up in July 2019.

Space Jam 2 Cast Includes Several NBA Players

James may be the lead but he’s by no means the only star in the Space Jam 2 cast. Star Trek: Discovery’s Sonequa Martin-Green was one of the first confirmed additions to the Space Jam 2 cast. Martin-Green will play James’ wife in the film. That Hashtag Show revealed a character breakdown of Martin-Green’s role which described her as “the rock of the family” who “loves her three kids unconditionally.” Additional character breakdowns reveal fictional versions of James’ kids will also be included in the film, but it’s unclear to what extent his onscreen family will figure into the plot.

In July 2019, it was announced that Don Cheadle had been cast in Space Jam 2 in an unconfirmed role. It’s possible Cheadle could play a fictional version of James’ business manager – a role also included in That Hashtag Show’s character breakdown list – or he could have an entirely different role altogether.

One of the biggest treats of the first Space Jam was the casting of popular 1990s basketball stars who, in the film, had their athletic abilities stolen by the Monstars in order to defeat the Looney Tunes. Space Jam 2 has also begun casting current NBA stars in supporting roles. After initial reports indicated James was having trouble finding NBA players to join Space Jam 2, it was announced in June 2019 that NBA stars Anthony Davis, Klay Thompson, and Damian Lillard, as well as WNBA players Diana Taurasi and Nneka Ogwumike, had all been cast.

Space Jam 2 Story Details

Everything We Know About LeBron James Space Jam 2

In a 2018 interview, LeBron James revealed what the story of Space Jam 2 would be and how it would connect to the original. As James and his business manager, Maverick Carter, maintained during the profile, Space Jam 2 would not be a sequel to the first film. Rather, it seems Space Jam 2 will be a reboot of the first film and will ostensibly update the plot to feel more modern. The specifics on how this will play out, in addition to James meeting up with the Looney Tunes just as Space Jam did with Michael Jordan, are still unknown. However, in April 2020, James did confirm that the sequel is officially titled Space Jam: A New Legacy.

At the time, James and Carter also expressed an interest in having their Space Jam spawn a film franchise but it’s unclear if there’s still an interest in doing that as of 2019. If this is still the case, then the plot would feature either an open-ended finale to allow the story to continue or a plot twist which could help keep the story going.

Will Space Jam 2 Feature Space Jam Cameos?

Everything We Know About LeBron James Space Jam 2

So far no cameos have been confirmed for Space Jam 2. There are plenty of opportunities for cameos to happen simply based on the fact the film stars James, a well-connected athlete and actor. He could bring in stars of all sorts for quick appearances throughout the film. Space Jam 2 is also primed for highlighting contemporary sports stars and celebrities because, if it’s similar to the first movie, it will follow a fictionalized version of James’ life, which allows for the inclusion of a few famous faces.

The one ideal cameo for Space Jam 2 is Michael Jordan. As the star of the first Space Jam and a legendary basketball player in his own right, having Jordan appear in the film, even for a brief moment, would be a huge get. In the same September 2018 THR interview, Maverick Carter spoke about the possibility of Jordan having a Space Jam 2 cameo: “We’ll see. Hopefully, there will be a role for Michael if he wants it. But Michael Jordan is Michael F***in’ Jordan. It doesn’t matter [if James] calls him, he’s gonna do whatever the hell he wants, which he has earned that right to do… LeBron and Michael are not sitting around talking about Space Jam.”

While a Michael Jordan cameo hasn’t been secured yet, there’s still enough time to get him on board – even if it’s just for one quick scene.

The Space Jam 2 Trailer Isn’t Out Yet

With interest in a Space Jam sequel involving James floating around since 2012 and actual movement on the project happening since 2016, it was believed a Space Jam 2 trailer would have been released in 2018 after James announced his free agency. However, not even a teaser was released at the time. This delay was later revealed to be the decision of James and his management team, who scrapped the Space Jam 2 trailer debut because plans on their rollout had been leaked. Although not reported on at the time, it’s also likely no trailer was revealed because it was unclear if any filming had occurred, which would have resulted in enough available footage to put a trailer together.

In June 2019, filming on Space Jam 2 officially began. Things went smoothly, and production wrapped in September 2019. With the requirements of post-production a bit more rigorous than other films (those Looney Tunes have to get in there somehow), it’s likely a trailer will arrive at least a year before the film’s July 2021 release date. San Diego Comic-Con 2020 would’ve been an ideal time for that to happen, but with that event now canceled thanks to the Coronavirus, it’s unclear when the next good opportunity will arrive for the trailer’s debut.
