Family Guy: 5 Times We Felt Bad For Chris (& 5 Times We Hated Him)

Chris Griffin can be annoying and inappropriate on Family Guy, and sometimes fans hate him. But on occasion, they also feel sorry for him too.

Chris Griffin is the source of many inappropriate jokes on one of Seth McFarlane’s greatest creations Family Guy and has provided countless laughs over the show’s eighteen seasons. Fans have seen Chris being incredibly inappropriate towards Meg and Lois but often these make for some strange but comedic moments.

Not every joke on the show lands, and sometimes the characters are written so that we do hate them in certain moments. Let’s take a look at 5 times we have felt bad for Chris Griffin, and 5 times when he’s grinded our gears.

10 Felt Bad For Chris: When He Was Robbed By His Own Goldfish

In season 2 episode 21, ‘Forefather’, Peter tries to teach Chris how to be responsible. Chris reveals on a camping trip that he once had a bad experience with a goldfish and the scene cuts back to Chris coming home to find that his goldfish presumably flopped his way out of his bowl, across the floor and out the window.

Not only that, but the goldfish also robbed Chris of his money. A comedic moment from the early days which could definitely only happen to Chris. In a later episode, Chris was also briefly held hostage by his old fish, who had mutated into a size bigger than Chris himself. Safe to say, Chris has had bad luck with pets.

9 Hated Chris: When He Beat Up Brian To See A Girl

In season 6 episode 12, ‘Long John Peter’, Chris falls in love with a vet intern called Anna but things go south when he takes dating advice from Peter and insults Anna on a date. In order to see her, Chris whacks Brian with a Chair breaking his nose and impaling him with wooden splints just so he can go and apologize.

After everything that Brian has done for you Chris, not cool. Of course, he could have just gone to the vet with the purpose of apologizing but that wouldn’t have warranted as many laughs, but still.

8 Felt Bad For Chris: When Lois Got Him Beat Up At School

In season 4 episode 13, ‘Jungle Love’, Chris tells Lois he doesn’t want to go to school due to the ‘Freshman Hunt’, which is when all the freshmen get beat up by the older kids. After re-assuring Chris that everything will be fine, Lois shouts “FRESHMAN” once Chris gets out of the car, leading him to be beaten up before he even walks in the door.

Everyone felt bad for Chris at this moment, and Chris even felt like he had to escape to live in the jungle to finally relax.

7 Hated Chris: When He Said Brian Didn’t Have A Soul

In season 4 episode 1, ‘North By North Quahog’, Peter and Lois go on a second honeymoon leaving Brian in charge of the kids. When Meg & Chris are fighting over the TV remote Brian tries to take charge to which Chris replies “I don’t have to listen to you, you’re a dog, you don’t have a soul!” Stewie, being the supportive friend to Brian that he is, tells Brian to take charge.

Setting aside the fact that dogs are arguably the greatest animals on earth, it has been shown many times throughout the show that Brian does have a soul with his many girlfriends, musical numbers, and advice to other members of the family.

6 Felt Bad For Chris: When He Was Made Fun Of For Being Poor

In season 5 episode 16, ‘No Chris Left Behind’, Chris gets expelled from James Woods High for being the dumbest kid in the school, and Peter and Lois have to find a new school for him.

His grandfather Carter helps him get into Morningwood Academy but the other kids who are far more wealthy make fun of Chris for being ‘poor’ compared to them. A below the belt insult that definitely made fans feel sorry for Chris.

5 Hated Chris: When He Hid In Meg’s Closet With A Video Camera

In season 4 episode 19, ‘Brian Sings And Swings’, Meg pretends to be a lesbian after joining a lesbian alliance club and she tries to convince Lois by kissing her friend on the cheek before Lois properly kisses her friend.

Chris then hilariously falls out of the closet with a video camera (followed not long after by Quagmire). This scene just adds to the comedic but creepy mindset Chris has regarding the women he is related to.

4 Felt Bad For Chris: When Meg Blackmailed Him

In season 11 episode 13, ‘Chris Cross’, Meg catches Chris stealing money from Lois’s purse and blackmails him to do all her chores including cleaning her room, doing her homework amongst other things.

Meg takes the blackmailing so far that Chris decides to move in with Herbert. Fans of the show will know Herbert well enough to know why we should all feel sorry for Chris in this episode.

3 Hated Chris: When He Became Popular

In season 7 episode 13, ‘Stew-Roids’, Chris dates recurring side character Connie D’Amico and becomes popular himself. Once he is as popular as she is Chris turns on Meg who was hoping that Chris’s new status would rub off on her.

Unfortunately, Chris has other plans and doesn’t even invite Meg to his party which is, of course, at her own house. Meg was trying to be friends with Connie long before she showed interest in Chris. Not cool Chris, not cool.

2 Felt Bad For Chris: When His Video Was Leaked To The School

In the same episode, Connie dated Chris to make him popular, but her plan backfires and Connie becomes the loser once Chris steals all of her friends. Connie decides to get back at him and asks Meg for help.

Meg then asks Neil Goldman to play an embarrassing video of Chris while he is on stage. The video is Chris dancing with make-up on and a blanket around him, losing him his popular status. A harsh choice from Connie and Meg that no one would wish upon their enemy in the real world, but perhaps it was necessary.

1 Hated Chris: When He Called Joe A ‘Two-Wheeled’ Monster

In season 6 episode 12, ‘Long John Peter’, Chris goes to The Clam to ask for advice about “the birds and the bees” from Peter, Quagmire, and Cleveland. When Joe offers him advice Chris states that he was looking for advice from someone that isn’t “broken from the waist down”.

Joe is one of the best side characters in the show and despite Joe having two children Kevin and Susie, Chris is being horribly distasteful (as Family Guy can be), thin ice Chris.
