Family Guy Just Proved Disney Cant Steal Its Edge

Family Guy is notorious for its risqué jokes at Disney’s expense, and the Bart Simpson gag in season 20, episode 8, “The Birthday Bootlegger” proves that Seth MacFarlane has no intention of losing the show’s edge now that Disney owns the series. Family Guy has been on television screens for over 20 years, spanning well over 300 episodes and making creator Seth MacFarlane a household name. Family Guy has seen its fair share of criticism and controversy over the years for its offensive content, though this edge is also the show’s strength as it revels in shock value.

While there are very few subjects that are off-limits for the show to reference or satire, the writers of Family Guy take particular delight in bashing their parent company. Historically this was 20th Century Fox, though they were bought by The Walt Disney Company in 2019. Along with Family Guy, the merger also gave Disney the rights to rival animation show The Simpsons. Family Guy also has a long history of making Disney jokes, often around untrue urban myths around Walt Disney’s character, but now, that line is slightly changing.

Family Guy season 20, episode 8, “The Birthday Bootlegger” contains a gag directed at Disney’s authoritative control of its IP. The joke (via Twitter) has Stewie being put in detention in elementary school. To his horror, his fellow inmates are older kids, and he notices Bart Simpson writing on the chalkboard in the style of The Simpsons’ iconic opening titles. Bart’s lines say, “It’s a pleasure to work for the Disney Corporation.” Stewie’s deadpan reaction is to say “oh that is such a load of…” before his voice changes to Mickey Mouse’s and finishes with “Truth! A wonderful load of truth!” By Family Guy standards, the joke at Disney’s expense isn’t offensive but does prove to all that the show’s new owners will not be safe from Family Guy’s satire or references.

Over the last few decades, Disney has had a voracious appetite for the acquisition of studios (20th Century Fox, Pixar, Lucasfilm, and Marvel Studios) and IP (The Muppets, The Simpsons). One of the criticisms against this is that the “Disneyfication” of IP takes the edge off and sanitizes what made them special in the first place. The brand of Disney is very much centered around wholesome, family-friendly content, which is entirely at odds with Family Guy’s brand of irreverent gags. At one time, Bart Simpson was considered the face of rebellion, but while still successful, The Simpsons as a show has become increasingly sanitized and toothless, even prior to the change in ownership. At the time of the Disney/Fox acquisition, Seth MacFarlane told reporters (via Variety) that he was “remarkably unfazed” by the news. It’s therefore encouraging to see that Disney is still fair game for Family Guy jokes, and is a good sign that they will not fall foul of the Disneyfication curse.

Unlike The Simpsons comforting familiarity, Family Guy’s continued popularity over the years has been in no small part down to its ability to push the boundaries of what is acceptable to say or do on a TV show. A sanitized version of Family Guy without its edge would quickly become stale. With The Walt Disney Company now being the most powerful entertainment brand in the world, it’s refreshing to see there are still corners of its empire that finds ways to subvert its pervasive dominance across popular culture, even if it’s just a throwaway gag.
