Similar to Scott Pilgrim’s premise of battling it out against a series of exes, Thirsty Suitors is about reconciling and rebuilding relationships.

While The Game Awards’ main event is great for showcasing a ton of upcoming triple-A titles that the wide majority of gamers can look forward to, the pre-show is when fans of indie and niche games will want to tune in. Several excellent upcoming games from indie developers were announced and highlighted during last week’s event including Tunic, an action-adventure, Planet of Lana, an upcoming sci-fi game, and perhaps one of the most eccentric of the bunch, Thirsty Suitors, which sounds a little bit like Scott Pilgrim vs. The World but with skateboarding and cooking challenges.

Many know Scott Pilgrim thanks to the fantastically quirky movie starring Michael Cera based on the comic series, but some gamers have likely heard of the sidescrolling beat ’em up from Ubisoft that observes the same story. Following Scott Pilgrim, a man in his early twenties who’s broke and living with his best friend Wallace, when he falls in love with the iconic and fleeting Ramona Flowers, he finds that he must fight her evil exes to date her officially. The caricatures Scott comes across include a faux vegan granted superpowers due to his vegan diet, a woman who was unfortunately swept up in Ramona’s bicurious phase, and Gideon, her most recent love. When it comes to the amount of character and personality the Scott Pilgrim franchise brandishes, it looks like players can expect the same from Thirsty Suitors.

What is Thirsty Suitors?

At first blush, the premise for Thirsty Suitors looks to be pretty similar to Scott Pilgrim, but instead of fighting off the exes to win someone’s heart over, players will step into the shoes of Jala, who’s been reckless with the hearts of others, according to her family, and now must go toe to toe with her former partners in turn-based combat. In a rare instance in the video game industry, Jala is the child of immigrants, and this Southern Asian inspiration combined with the life of a queer young adult has a huge influence on the game’s narrative and activities.

Not a whole lot is known about Thirsty Suitors, but unlike quirky romance games such as Boyfriend Dungeon, the indie title from Outerloop Games and Annapurna Interactive doesn’t look to be so much about winning the hearts of someone Jala fancies, but rather reconciling with her past lovers to “mend broken friendships in time for her sister’s wedding.” But with such an event and the family’s judgemental matriarch on the horizon, it could be possible that romance will play a part in the end. At the very least, players will get to meet an interesting cast of characters including the men, women, and people that Jala once fancied.

The over-the-top turn-based combat certainly takes some inspiration from flashy JRPGs such as Persona 5. Only one battle is shown in Thirsty Suitors’ trailer, but fans get a good glimpse at its ridiculous animations and attacks as well as what looks like Jala calling in her mom for backup, only to squash her opponent. Other activities in the game will include skateboarding, where Jala can learn a number of flamboyant tricks while she moves around the map, and cooking, where she ultimately impresses her mother and deepens their familial bond with a deep menu of South Asian dishes. Ultimately, the game is about Jala finding and accepting herself, which is unexpectedly a big part of Scott Pilgrim as well.

Unfortunately, there’s no release date for Thirsty Suitors yet and Steam only says the game is “coming soon,” nor has it been announced which platforms the game will come to. But hopefully, it won’t be too long before gamers can get their hands on this enthralling and unique title.

Thirsty Suitors is currently in development.
