Final Fantasy 14 Wont Destroy Your Houses if You Cant Subscribe During Coronavirus

In the growing impact of the Coronavirus across the globe, there may be some relief for players of Final Fantasy XIV, as demolition of players’ in-game houses has been halted. Final Fantasy XIV, which initially launched in 2010, has become a popular MMORPG title by studio Square Enix.

Not without its share of hiccups along the way such as low ratings and poor critical reviews, Square Enix took the plunge and opted for a re-do of the entire game. This saw the game being rebranded as Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, much to the approval of players and previous critics. It has since acquired numerous awards and nominations as well as a growing player base.

The announcement by Square Enix was made in light of the economic implications of the COVID-19 virus and its possible impact on players of FFXIV’s ability to pay the game subscription fees. Players of the MMORPG play on a monthly subscription of $12.99 USD. Among the many rules of FFXIV, one of them requires that players must be active in the game once a week in order to retain their spot and property. With some players possibly at a loss of income, Square Enix recognizes that some players may not be able to pay their monthly subscription fees and thus risk losing their in-game homes.

This new measure from Square Enix will be major relief for the millions of players directly affected economically by the growing pandemic. With increased social distancing and gaming recommended by WHO as safety measure to curb the spread of COVID-19, more players will be looking towards online titles to keep busy and safe – but not necessarily ones that require monthly subscriptions, since many people’s income has been affected as well.

The gaming industry has seen its share of obstacles resulting from COVID-19 as tournaments are cancelled, game developments delayed and even the release of upcoming consoles threatened. It is unclear if this temporary suspension will mean that players of Final Fantasy XIV will need to back pay their outstanding subscription fees once it is over or if other provisions will be allowed by Square Enix. This measure may now possibly cause a chain reaction where players may seek similar action from other subscription based MMO titles in these times, though other popular choices like World of Warcraft don’t have similar housing markets and economies.
