If the rumors regarding Final Fantasy Tactics Remaster are true, then it seems that one of the best entries in the Final Fantasy series is being ported to modern systems. Final Fantasy Tactics is a tactical RPG set in the world of Ivalice, which also appeared in FF12. The story follows Ramza Beoulve, the youngest son of a proud noble family, who must renounce his status and become an outlaw, as he uncovers the forbidden truth about the church that could destroy the entire nation.

Final Fantasy Tactics was released for the PlayStation in ’97 and it received a port for the PSP in 2007, called The War of the Lions. The game has also received a port to mobile phones. Oddly enough, Final Fantasy Tactics has yet to be remastered for modern systems, even though all of the mainline Final Fantasy titles released on the original PlayStation have been.

It seems that Final Fantasy Tactics is coming to modern systems, thanks to a datamine of GeForce Now, which revealed several upcoming games. A recent survey sent out by Square Enix also seems to confirm that Final Fantasy Tactics Remaster is on the way. It’s unlikely that it will receive any brand new content, as the other Final Fantasy Remasters haven’t, but there are plenty of changes that can be made to the existing content that could improve the experience.

It’s likely that the Final Fantasy Tactics Remaster will be based on The War of the Lions version of the game, rather than the original PlayStation version of Final Fantasy Tactics. The War of the Lions fixed the localization issues and added a lot of new content, including a whole new multiplayer mode. There was also new content in the form of extra battles that happened throughout the story, including a rematch with the hated Argath, who is revived as a death knight, and must be defeated once more.

War of the Lions added two brand new jobs to Final Fantasy Tactics: Onion Knight and Dark Knight. The Onion Knight was the starter job in FF3, before becoming the ultimate unlockable job in the 3D remake of FF3. Final Fantasy Tactics did have an NPC with the Dark Knight class, but he was changed to a Fell Knight in The War of the Lions, and Dark Knight became a regular job. The problem with these jobs is that they were incredibly difficult to unlock and most players wouldn’t encounter them until the post-game unless they grinded a lot.

The Onion Knight was the easiest of the two to unlock, as a character only needed to hit level 6 in Squire and Chemist. The problem was that the character had to master other jobs, in order to unlock levels in Onion Knight. The Dark Knight was a pain to unlock, as the character had to master the Knight and Black Mage jobs; hit level 8 in Dragoon, Samurai, Ninja, and Geomancer; and kill twenty enemies. That last requirement was annoying, as it meant waiting for the enemy’s body to crystalize, which took several rounds. Final Fantasy Tactics Remaster should loosen the restrictions on these jobs so that people can experience them during a regular playthrough.

War of the Lions fixed a lot of the issues with Final Fantasy Tactics, while also adding new content. There was one aspect of the original Japanese version of the game that was left out of every English release, including the one on smart devices. The Japanese version of Final Fantasy Tactics had four “Sound Novels,” which were unlocked by discovering rare items. The Sound Novels were mini text adventures, which followed different characters throughout the history of Ivalice.

These played out like Choose Your Own Adventure novels, with the player able to select different options to continue the story. The Sound Novels also contained unique Final Fantasy artwork and tracks that can’t be found anywhere else in the game. Square Enix managed to avoid putting the Sound Novels in three iterations of Final Fantasy Tactics, and the time has come to finally give international fans the complete experience.

Final Fantasy Tactics has one of the most notorious dungeons in video game history, in the form of Riovanes Castle. This is a dungeon that traps unwary players within its halls and can result in save files becoming useless. Luckily, its reputation is such that anyone even slightly interested in playing Final Fantasy Tactics has probably heard of it, and knows how to prepare.

Riovanes Castle is composed of three battles. The first one is relatively simple, with the player fighting the defenders outside the castle walls in a straightforward battle. Once the first battle is finished, the player will be asked to save their game, and it’s here that the trap is sprung. If the player only uses a single save file for FF Tactics, then they could ruin their entire run, as completing the first battle will lock the player into two more consecutive battles, with no way to leave the dungeon and gain levels.

The second battle is one of the hardest in the game, as Ramza must fight the powerful Wiegraf in a one-on-one battle. If the player was running a mage build for Ramza, then they may as well reset now, as he’s not going to survive the oncoming onslaught in Final Fantasy Tactics. If the player manages to defeat Wiegraf, then he transforms into a demon, and both sides can bring in their allies, for what is a brutally difficult fight. Should the player somehow survive this battle, then they still need to complete the third, where they must protect an ally from three incredibly powerful enemies, two of which possess the Assassin job, which can use an instant kill attack.

The simple way for Final Fantasy Tactics Remaster to fix the Riovanes Castle boss fight is to give the option to leave the castle between fights. This would let the player level up or buy gear before continuing to the next battle. That way, it won’t be possible for them to get stuck on the Wiegraf or Marquis Elmdore fights.

Final Fantasy Remaster Should Balance NPC Party Members

Final Fantasy Tactics has one of the strangest difficulty curves in the series. The battles at the start of the game can be brutally difficult, thanks to the player’s party being outnumbered, and the enemy forces possessing advanced jobs that likely haven’t been unlocked yet. There’s no denying that Final Fantasy Tactics is a grindy game at the start, as the player will need to repeatedly fight random battles in the same few areas, in order to bypass the mandatory story missions. Once the player completes the brutal Riovanes Castle gauntlet, though, the whole game becomes too easy.

The player gains NPCs with unique jobs that break the game, most notably Cid and his Sword Saint job, which gives him access to attacks that can brutalize enemy forces. By the same token, the NPC characters that join the party during the first half of the game are mostly too weak. Argath and Delita just take up space during their time in the party, Mustadio is only effective at fighting the undead, and Rapha and Marach’s special attacks hit random spaces. Final Fantasy Tactics Remaster can drastically improve the experience of the game by tweaking the skills of the NPC party members, making them more useful in the early parts of the game, and less overpowered in the latter half.
