Is Blumhouse’s planned Five Nights At Freddy’s movie still in development? While horror video games are experiencing something of a boom now, there was a period where they lost their edge. Following the success of Resident Evil 4 in 2005, survival horror moved increasingly towards action over horror or suspense. The Silent Hill and Dead Space games dialed up the action and setpieces, while Resident Evil 6 was a bloated mess filled that tried to cram in every genre and mechanic but did nothing particularly well.

Around the time of Alien: Isolation and The Evil Within there was a move back towards horror, which continues to this day. The likes of the Resident Evil 2 remake proved it was possible to craft an old-fashioned survival horror title and still make it scary as hell. Another title that helped with this comeback is Five Nights At Freddy’s, with the original game debuting in 2014. The simple but effective formula for the first game had a security guard trying to survive nightly attacks by killer animatronic mascots at a fictional children’s restaurant.

Five Nights At Freddy’s has since had many sequels and while its reliance on jump scares has been criticized, there’s no denying the game’s can be heart racing at their best. A Five Night’s At Freddy’s movie has been in the works at Blumhouse for some time, so what is its current status?

Five Nights At Freddy’s Has Been In Development For Five Years

The Five Nights At Freddy’s movie was originally set up at Warners Bros, with Monster House’s Gil Kenan signed to direct. The movie later left Warner Bros and went to Blumhouse, with Home Alone director Chris Columbus replacing Kenan. The game’s creator Scott Cawton is also intimately involved with the development of the movie too and is determined to make sure it come out right.

The Five Nights At Freddy’s Movie Has Been Delayed Multiple Times

Development of Five Night’s At Freddy’s with Blumhouse has been hit with many delays, with Cawton and Jason Blum admitting cracking the script has been a problem. A draft that Blum and Columbus both liked was thrown out by Cawton after he came up with a different concept, and apparently, the events of the first three games will play into the plot. In 2019 Blum predicted Five Nights At Freddy’s might be ready for 2020, but it was soon pushed back again and it doesn’t currently have a release date.

Five Nights At Freddy’s Will (Probably) Happen

It seems the major issue with the Five Nights At Freddy’s movie is the screenplay. The franchise is steeped in lore but translating the experience of the games, many of which involve sitting in a room looking at cameras, to the big-screen form is proving tricky. It’s actually a good sign the producers and Cawton are taking the time to develop it properly, as releasing a low-budget movie of Five Nights At Freddy’s would be a guaranteed hit regardless of quality. For this reason, a movie version feels inevitable, but fans will likely have to wait longer as its still showing no signs of moving ahead.
