For Green Lantern Beating Superman Is Hilariously Easy

The Power Rings of the Green Lantern Corps are said to be the most powerful weapons in the universe. Not only do these rings allow the user to fly and survive in outer space, they also enable a Green Lantern to create energy constructs in the shape of anything they can imagine. This actually gives Lanterns a very easy way to beat beings like Superman – by manifesting Kryptonite radiation out of thin air.

At first, this seems impossible, even for a Green Lantern. After all, the rings only create simulations of objects, not the objects themselves. Thus, when Hal Jordan or Kyle Rayner project the image of a dinosaur, they’re not actually creating a living creature but a solid light projection in the shape of an animal.

However, on closer inspection, creating Kryptonite is not just possible for Green Lanterns – it’s actually easy. Remember, it’s not the actual mineral that can weaken and harm Kryptonians but the radioactive rays emanating from chunks of Kryptonite that Superman really has to worry about. And since Green Lantern rings are basically energy manipulation devices, replicating Kryptonite radiation is well within their capabilities.

In fact, Green Lantern rings have been shown to create massive amounts of Kryptonite radiation in both the Silver and Modern Age. In DC Comics Presents #26, a creature from the N’Gom alien race took Hal Jordan’s Green Lantern ring and assumed his form. He then used the ring to manifest a giant chunk of Green Kryptonite to kill Superman. While the floating Kryptonite meteor the N’Gom created was an energy construct, the deadly radiation it produced was quite real. Fortunately, the real Hal Jordan managed to hit the N’Gom, break his concentration, and cause the Kryptonite to fade in time for Superman to beat his enemy.

Even in the modern age of DC Comics, Green Lantern rings were capable of producing Kryptonite energy, although there were some caveats. In Superman: Man of Tomorrow #13, the Green Lantern Kyle Rayner found himself facing off against a rogue Superman. Although Kyle didn’t initially know how to produce Kryptonite radiation with his ring, the Martian Manhunter used his telepathic abilities to find the formula for Kryptonite in Superman’s own mind and then transfer it to Kyle’s.

Kyle then uses his ring to create a synthetic energy construct of Kryptonite, but Superman taunts Kyle, asking if he has the strength of will to continue manifesting the Kryptonite long enough for the radiation to kill the Man of Steel. At that moment, however, Superman’s robots attack and Kyle lets his Kryptonite construct dissipate, choosing instead to help the Justice League ward off their attackers. It’s also worth noting that the Green Lantern Corps once had a policy against using Power Rings to kill – meaning that while a Green Lantern might be able to manifest Kryptonite radiation and hurt Superman or any other Kryptonians, they couldn’t actually kill them without violating their oath.

Another idea that may or may not have been explored in the comics is whether or not Green Lantern rings can simulate other forms of Kryptonite radiation – such as the unpredictable mutating rays of Red Kryptonite or power-stealing radiation of Gold Kryptonite. Since Green Lantern rings project green colored energy, it would seem that they’re limited to producing only Green Kryptonite radiation – however as the rings can also manipulate multiple forms of magnetic, heat, and gravitational energy, it actually seems probable that they can mimic the energy signatures of other Kryptonite radiation as well. Superman had better watch out.
