The hit 90s sitcom Friends made history with its long 10-year run, something of a record at the time, and gained iconic status among young viewers. The series has achieved new heights of popularity amidst newer generations of fans in recent years after the advent of the OTT platforms.

Monica Geller and Phoebe Buffay were both important parts of the gang. They were roommates at the beginning and became very good friends, despite having very different personalities. Here are a few reasons Monica was better than the eccentric but kind-hearted Phoebe and vice versa.

10 Monica: She Was Organized

Monica was by far the most organized of the lot. In fact, one of the pet gags of the writers, as far as Monica was concerned, was her obsession with organizing and categorizing things, even towels.

The fact that Monica was organized worked in favor of the entire gang, however much they made fun of her for it. She was the one who would organize events and keep things in order for the rest of the friends many of whom were very disorganized and simply lazy.

9 Phoebe: She Was Selfless

Phoebe was the most selfless and sensitive of the gang. From carrying her half brother’s babies to avoiding meat and feeling sorry for the trees during Christmas when they were put through the chipper, Phoebe was kind and generous in a selfless sort of way that none of the others, especially Monica wasn’t.

When Pheebs realized that her voice had been dubbed by another singer in the music video she had made for her magnum opus “Smelly Cat,” she actually felt bad for the singer who she thought wasn’t getting her due credit, and withdrew from the project.

8 Monica: She Was A Great Chef

Monica was an amazing chef and hostess and it was at her apartment that the gang hung out when they weren’t getting coffee at the Central Perk. Every one of those lavish meals the friends indulged in throughout the series was literally the handiwork of Monica. Well, except that one time Rachel made a beef dessert.

Monica loved having people gravitating towards her, enjoying her excellent, although at times, too complicated fine dining. Her culinary skills were integral to the many good times the group had during the course of the series, especially during Christmas or thanksgiving.

7 Phoebe: She Was A Self-Taught Musician

Phoebe was not as privileged as the others growing up and never went to high school. However, she did make the effort to teach herself the guitar and wrote songs which, however strange or depressing, were at least original.

Phoebe was wanted to experience the same intellectual achievements the others had gone through in school and joined a literature class, where she was really keen to learn.

6 Monica: She Was Disciplined

Monica was an overt rule follower and always needed to come out on top. However, her organization and focus made her more disciplined than Phoebe and the rest.

Monica planned ahead and liked to know exactly what could go wrong with things, so that she could have contingency plans. Her discipline was another thing that helped keep order among all the chaos, what with all her comparitively messy roommates.

5 Phoebe: She Was Less Competitive

Phoebe was nowhere near as competitive as Monica. In fact, if anything, she was more used to sacrificing for the sake of others.

Phoebe’s eccentricities were justified by the fact that she was often in her own world, at least towards the beginning of the series, and didn’t really care to compete for victory or material satisfaction. She was weird in the best, most endearing way possible.

4 Monica: She Was The Master Of Cleaning

Monica was obsessed with cleaning, one of the most obvious aspects of her character. She kept a very clean house and expected others to do the same, which often caused hilarious situations for the audience.

The cleaning might have gone a little overboard at times, but Monica’s obsessive habits did help the gang stay spic and span. Otherwise, with Joey across the hall, cleanliness might not have been the top agenda for most of them.

3 Phoebe: She Was Stronger Because Of Her Struggles

Phoebe had a tough life as a youngster. Her adoptive mother had committed suicide, and she had been forced to live on the streets for a good while.

Going through such ups and downs made Phoebe strong and toughened her up. She knew how to get out of scrapes and had learned to survive in the direst of circumstances, unlike her more privileged friends.

2 Monica: She Got What She Wanted

Monica loved to hold the reigns of everything that happened around her. She did have issues with control and hated delegating tasks, but her go-getter attitude helped her achieve a lot, allowing her to finally attain her dream job with her own kitchen in a really good restaurant.

Monica was a smart, independent woman who knew exactly what she wanted, and that helped her to come out on top in almost everything she did.

1 Phoebe: She Had Principles

Phoebe Buffay was not just kind and selfless, but also extremely principled, with firm beliefs. In fact, her ideals made her one of the most principled of the entire gang.

Phoebe once felt so guilty about an extra amount of money the bank had accidentally desposited in her account that she gave the money away to make it right. Her sense of right and wrong was the most pronounced among her friends.
