Today, Square Enix announced a new Fullmetal Alchemist game for mobile devices and released a trailer showcasing the upcoming title’s gameplay. The critically acclaimed, globally popular manga and anime series Fullmetal Alchemist recently celebrated its 20th anniversary. The manga finished after over 100 chapter releases; and the franchise has since spawned two anime adaptations, a live-action film, and more than a dozen video games.

Many of the series video games did not receive international releases, with Fullmetal Alchemist: Dual Sympathy for the Nintendo DS serving as the last game released in the U.S. – back in 2006. Unfortunately many such games (JRPGs) have only seen releases in Japan, but over recent years many Japanese developers see the value in localizing games. Japanese fans saw over a dozen Fullmetal Alchemist games released on PS2, Wii, GBA, DS and the PlayStation Portable. However, because of low sales numbers, international markets only saw the release of 3 games from the franchise. The two PS2 games released in the states (Fullmetal Alchemist and the Broken Angel, and Fullmetal Alchemist 2: Curse of the Crimson Elixer) featured action-RPG gameplay many reviewers compared to Kingdom Hearts. The game’s stories left fans with little more than a distraction rather than a required playthrough for those hungry for something more substantial in the realm of Fullmetal Alchemist content.

Square Enix dropped a bombshell for Fullmetal Alchemist fans with the surprise announcement trailer for the very stylish Fullmetal Alchemist Mobile. The trailer shown (via Siliconera) contains stunning graphics recreating several memorable scenes spanning the entire series. The series’ main characters, The Elric Brothers, are tasked with battling enemies in fast-paced 3D environments; similar to the smooth Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm games. As of writing, the free-to-play game has been announced to release in Japan in Summer 2022 with no International release date set in stone.

Many fans on Twitter expressed displeasure with the game coming to mobile platforms instead of a full console game release similar to Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chronicles. Fans fear the game may limit gameplay and features in favor of microtransactions, with the belief such features put desired content behind a paywall for free-to-play games. The announcement trailer also allows Japanese fans to pre-register for the game and promises rewards at launch if enough players sign up. The game’s developers reportedly hope to see at least 500,000 players pre-register for the game. If Square Enix chooses to release an English version of Fullmetal Alchemist Mobile, that number is likely attainable.

Thanks to Fullmetal Alchemist’s 20th-anniversary, fans have been hoping for something new related to the series. A mobile game may not be what fans hoped for, even though technology and storytelling have pushed mobile gaming to new heights. Mobile game or not, the title looks like a faithful adaptation filled with passion from the developers and stunning visuals. An impressive announcement trailer gives hope that Fullmetal Alchemist Mobile may impress and hopefully not come up short like the show’s main protagonist.
