Futurama 10 Characters Whose Popularity Declined By The End Of The Series

Futurama introduced a countless number of characters from different walks of life, including humans, mutants, robots, and aliens. The show did an excellent job of balancing out the diverse cast, even giving some side characters more depth than audiences expected.

It is staggeringly impressive that the show could simultaneously create so many beloved characters and develop this futuristic world at the same time. Not every character retained their popularity throughout the show’s 10 season runtime, as some of these characters needed to work off of other characters to be funny or just didn’t get the much-needed development that other characters did.

10 Dr. John A. Zoidberg Is The Punching Bag Of The Series

Futurama 10 Characters Whose Popularity Declined By The End Of The Series

Zoidberg is Planet Express’ bumbling, incompetent doctor with little knowledge of human anatomy. Although he often means well and craves companionship, few people can tolerate being around him due to his foul odor, his habit to eat practically anything, and his tendency to muck things up. He is famous for scuttling away while making whooping sounds whenever he senses danger.

The series treats Zoidberg as a punching bag, as the rest of the Planet Express crew often ostracizes him. The episodes starring him aren’t among the show’s most famous episodes, as Zoidberg has been known to act selfishly due to so many years of being mistreated. This, combined with his various repulsive habits, made his character more difficult to enjoy over time.

9 Amy Wong’s Struggles To Commit Damaged Her Otherwise Sweet Romance With Kif

Futurama 10 Characters Whose Popularity Declined By The End Of The Series

Amy is a student at Mars University and an intern at Planet Express. She is intelligent, and many people seem to like her due to her kind and outgoing personality. Her relationship with Kif is genuinely sweet most of the time.

Despite being spoiled due to her parents owning half of Mars, she recognizes Kif’s efforts to make her happy and reciprocates by giving him the encouragement he needs. Amy becomes a little more unlikable during the rough patches of their relationship, such as when she flirted with other men or ran out when she was overwhelmed by Kif’s pregnancy, making him complete most of the birthing ceremony on his own.

8 Kif Kroker Needs Zapp Brannigan To Be Funny

Futurama 10 Characters Whose Popularity Declined By The End Of The Series

For a while, Kif’s primary role was to serve as Zapp’s unwilling lieutenant. Most of his comedic moments came from his reactions to the inhumane, disgusting, and stupid actions of his captain. The series develops his character by giving him a romance with Amy, but Kif is more often than not struggling to prove himself worthy for her.

Although it is easy to feel for him when he is trapped in a bad situation, Kif is almost always down on his luck, which is often caused by Zapp or Amy. His misfortune may be played for laughs, it is difficult to find it funny when he is shedding genuine tears.

7 Hermes Conrad’s Soft Side Is Well-Hidden

Futurama 10 Characters Whose Popularity Declined By The End Of The Series

Hermes is both a bureaucrat and an accountant at Planet Express, working with stunning efficiency. He has one of the funniest yet tragic backstories in the show, and although he may not like to show it, he is a deeply caring person. He tries to act in the best interests of his son and even saved Bender’s life, although he didn’t want Bender to know this. This aspect of him can be overshadowed by his more heartless acts, as he has been shown being more invested in profit over the lives of his co-workers, and he even considered ejecting them all into the sun.

6 Dr. Ogden Wernstrom Is Almost Always At Odds With Farnsworth

Futurama 10 Characters Whose Popularity Declined By The End Of The Series

Dr. Wernstrom shares a history with Professor Farnsworth. Wernstrom was originally Farnsworth’s student, who gave him his first A- on a quiz due to penmanship. Wernstrom’s rage is relatable, for most students have received a grade that they felt wasn’t fair.

Even after getting the revenge that he craved, Wernstrom still took great pleasure in spending later episodes tormenting the professor. Considering that Farnsworth is so old that he can barely remember events immediately after they happen, Wernstrom’s continuous jabs at him seem needlessly cruel.

5 Robot Santa Claus Doesn’t Maintain Relevancy

Futurama 10 Characters Whose Popularity Declined By The End Of The Series

Robot Santa was a shocking yet entertaining version of the holiday icon. He had such high standards that he considered everyone naughty, with the exception of Zoidberg. Rather than simply leaving coal, he decided to obliterate anyone foolish enough to wander the streets during his once-a-year visit to Earth. He only appeared in a few of Futurama’s episodes, as there were only a limited number of X-Mas episodes. There was only so much that the series could do with a character like this, and the novelty of Santa as a killer robot wore out relatively quickly.

4 Calculon Is Incredibly Shallow

Futurama 10 Characters Whose Popularity Declined By The End Of The Series

Whenever the Planet Express crew is watching the television, they are usually watching All My Circuits, starring Calculon. His over-the-top, hammy acting, which the cast appeared to love, was so ridiculous that audiences couldn’t help but find it funny. As the series went on, it was revealed that this acting was paired with an arrogant attitude of a robot who believed that he deserved the world. He refused to do re-shoots and felt so entitled to an Oscar that he threatened to kill some people if he did not win one. His life revolved solely around his career, with the exception of his brief romance with Coilette.

3 Mom Is Needlessly Cruel To Her Own Sons

Futurama 10 Characters Whose Popularity Declined By The End Of The Series

Mom is the head of Momcorp, and one of the most frequently-appearing antagonists of the series. Her character had a lot of promise when she was first introduced. She posed as a kind, old lady to the masses, but was revealed to be deviously evil and manipulative. For a short time, Fry and his friends were convinced she was a good woman.

As time went on, her shtick wore out fast, and fans couldn’t help but feel sorry for her three sons, who were subjected to verbal and physical abuse even if they did nothing wrong. Over the course of the series, Mom shaped two of her sons to act just like her, making them lash out at each other.

2 Elzar Is Only Funny When Bender Is Around

Futurama 10 Characters Whose Popularity Declined By The End Of The Series

Elzar only seems to get laughs when Bender is around. Fans have seen glimpses of his cooking show, and although he uses strange ingredients, his jokes are not up to snuff. Bender, an aspiring cook, is often ceaselessly bothering Elzar for cooking tips. Most of the humor comes from Elzar trying to get the persistent bending unit off of his back. However, Elzar makes more frequent appearances later in the series, and without Bender to bother him. As a result, most of his jokes are him overcharging for meals or just being downright unsanitary, both of which get old fast.

1 Hyper-Chicken Is An Incompetent Lawyer Who Appeared Too Frequently

Hyper-Chicken is a lawyer who seems to be successful, despite appearing to be extremely unqualified for the job. Every time there is a courtroom scene, this alien chicken is sure to appear. Despite having confused people testifying with corn, he has actually managed to win some cases. If it looks as though he is about to lose, he doesn’t hesitate to tell his clients to plead insanity, which Bender does. The concept of a strangely incompetent lawyer was funny the first time, but considering he has appeared in the courtroom on at least 9 separate occasions, fans quickly grew tired of seeing him.
