In addition to being a cultural phenomenon, Game of Thrones was also a show that featured fantastic character development. All the main characters changed a great deal over the course of the show, as did fans’ feelings about them.
Sansa Stark is one of the characters who changed the most. She began as an entitled and naive character, yet she ultimately grew into one of the wisest characters as she became a voice of reason.
Enjoy some lemon cakes as we explore Sansa’s journey and take a look at 5 times we hated her and 5 times we felt bad for her.
10 Felt Bad: Lady’s Execution
Lady was Sansa’s direwolf. Lady mirrored a lot of Sansa’s behavior as she was more composed and ladylike than her direwolf siblings. Arya’s direwolf Nymeria attacked Prince Joffrey to protect Arya. Arya sent Nymeria away so the Lannisters wouldn’t kill the direwolf in retaliation.
Lady was still around, though, so Cersei settled for having Lady executed. Sansa didn’t deserve to lose her beloved Lady for no reason except petty vengeance.
9 Hated Her: Choosing Joffrey Over Her Family
The Sansa of season 1 was eager to please and impress Joffrey, even choosing him over her family on multiple occasions. She was so infatuated by the handsome prince that she was even willing to turn a blind eye to his arrogance, entitlement, and sadism. When asked what happened between Joffrey, Arya, and the direwolf Nymeria, Sansa said, “I don’t remember” in order to protect Joffrey. When Ned told her that she and Arya needed to go back to Winterfell for their safety, Sansa refused because “I’m meant to be [Joffrey’s] queen and have his babies.”
After the Lannisters rose up against House Stark, imprisoned Ned and butchered all his men, Sansa still chose to be loyal to Joffrey. She condemned her family as traitors and wrote a letter to her brother Robb ordering him to bend the knee.
8 Felt Bad: Witnessing Her Father’s Execution
Sansa was told that if her father confessed to treason and if he declared Joffrey as the true heir to the Iron Throne, he would be allowed to live out the rest of his days as a member of the Night’s Watch. Ned lied, made this confession, and Sansa did everything the Lannisters asked of her.
Joffrey broke his word and commanded that Ned be executed instead. Sansa watched her father die mere feet away from her while she was powerless to stop it.
7 Hated Her: Being Rude To Septa Mordane
Sansa once asked Septa Mordane where she was from. Septa Mordane smiled and began happily sharing her background. Then Sansa interjected and said, “Oh wait, I just realized I don’t care.”
Septa Mordane was strict, but all she ever tried to do was help Sansa in the ways she knew how. It was utterly rude for Sansa to make it seem like she cared about her and then moments later make Septa Mordane feel like her past and individual identity didn’t matter at all.
6 Felt Bad: Joffrey Publicly Humiliates Her
Joffrey treated Sansa terribly on numerous occasions, but the worst was when he publicly humiliated her in the throne room of the Red Keep. Joffrey wanted to humiliate her in retribution for the Lannister army’s defeat at the Battle of Oxcross.
He began by pointing his crossbow at Sansa and then commanded Meryn Trant to beat her. Trant punched her, beat her with his sword, and tore open her clothing. This sadism only ended when Tyrion entered the throne room and put a stop to it.
5 Hated Her: Choosing Littlefinger Over Brienne
In season 5, episode 2, Brienne of Tarth finally found Sansa Stark. Brienne offered her services and shared her pledge to protect and defend Catelyn Stark’s children. Sansa turned down Brienne and decided to stay with Littlefinger.
This was an infuriating moment. Sansa chose the most manipulative and self-serving man in Westeros over the honorable Brienne of Tarth. It makes some sense that Sansa chose the devil she knew over a character who was a stranger to her at that point, but it’s still incredibly frustrating. Fortunately, Brienne didn’t give up as she rescued Sansa in season 6 and she became Sansa’s sworn sword and close ally.
4 Felt Bad: Aunt Lysa And The Moon Door
Lysa Arryn was obsessed with Littlefinger. Shortly after she saw Littlefinger kiss Sansa, Lysa grabbed Sansa by the hair and pushed her down to the floor. Lysa screamed about how Littlefinger was hers and how she’d already killed everyone who stood in her way.
At this point, Sansa was finally free of King’s Landing and the Lannisters. She thought she was safe with her Aunt Lysa, only to be tormented and nearly killed by being tossed through the Moon Door.
3 Hated Her: Concealing The Truth From Jon
Sansa and Jon Snow were determined to take back Winterfell from Ramsay Bolton, but they struggled to find others willing to fight for their cause. With few options remaining, Sansa wrote a letter to Littlefinger in which she asked for his support. Littlefinger’s support meant bringing the Knights of the Vale to the battle.
Sansa concealed from Jon that she sent this letter. While the Knights of the Vale showed up at the end of the Battle of the Bastards and saved the day, Sansa and Jon would’ve been able to form a better battle plan if she’d been honest with him in the first place. They could’ve waited for the Knights of Vale to arrive, attack with a much stronger force, and prevented more casualties, including the death of Rickon.
2 Felt Bad: Ramsay Assaults And Torments Her
In order to forge an alliance with the Boltons, Littlefinger arranged a marriage between Sansa and Ramsay Bolton. Through this relationship, Ramsay further cemented himself as the most sadistic, ruthless, and irredeemable character. He assaulted Sansa on their wedding night while forcing Theon to watch. This was only the beginning as he assaulted her on numerous occasions and made her life a living nightmare.
When a woman at Winterfell tried to help Sansa, Ramsay had the woman flayed alive and reveled in showing Sansa the mutilated corpse. It felt wrong for Sansa to have escaped Joffrey and the Lannisters, only to suffer more at Ramsay’s hands.
1 Hated Her: Not Trusting Arya In Season 7
It was wonderful to see Sansa and Arya finally reunite in season 7. However, the joy of their reunion was quickly marred by the distrust that Littlefinger sowed between the two Stark sisters. While Arya had certainly changed a great deal since the last time Sansa saw her, it was irritating to see Sansa trusting Littlefinger over her own sister.
Both Sansa and Arya had come too far and developed too much for such petty distrust. Thankfully they were able to overcome this and ensure that Littlefinger finally receive his comeuppance in the season 7 finale.
