Game & Watch The Legend of Zelda Review – A Timely Timeless Timepiece

Nintendo is no stranger to dipping into its vault and dredging out iconic elements of its past. While this concept began with the resurgence of classic (albeit miniature) versions of the NES and SNES, in more recent years the company has resurrected its Game & Watch handheld line. Building off of this concept which debuted last year in the form of the Game & Watch: Super Mario Bros. unit, Game & Watch: The Legend of Zelda has arrived – bringing with it a fun way to enjoy a few nostalgic games on the go.

For those unfamiliar with the Game & Watch handhelds, the trick to understanding its capabilities lies within its simple branding. It is both a way to play games and a mobile watch – making it a literal game and watch. What makes this particular unit so enticing for Nintendo fans, however, is that it includes three classic The Legend of Zelda games on it. But the little portable that could doesn’t stop there, as it also delivers a Zelda-themed take on the Game & Watch classic game Vermin and similarly styled takes on a digital clock and timer.

The three main Zelda titles included on the Game & Watch are the original NES game The Legend of Zelda and its sequel, Zelda II: The Adventure Of Link, and the Game Boy rendition of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening. Despite the first two entries being available on Nintendo Switch for Switch Online subscribers, the novelty of playing the games on a Game & Watch doesn’t wear thin. The device is significantly more portable than even the Switch Lite console, making it an ideal item to throw in one’s pocket if they’re out and about. Although, those looking to chill on the couch for some handheld play are more than capable of doing so as well.

One of the biggest appeals of the Game & Watch: The Legend of Zelda, however, comes in the availability of the aforementioned game Link’s Awakening. The Game Boy title isn’t currently available on any modern platforms (except for the Nintendo 3DS), with Switch fans instead having to play a wonderful Link’s Awakening remake that scratches that volcanic egg-shaped itch. Fortunately, fans can access the original Link’s Awakening in its entirety here, giving the Game & Watch unit a fun incentive for fans jonesing for a classic.

Admittedly, it would have been nice to see games like the Game Boy Color’s DX rendition of Link’s Awakening included. There’s little doubt that the Game & Watch’s LCD screen would have been well suited to make that definitive version of the game pop. Additionally, there’s no reason that The Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past couldn’t have been added. Despite these being MIA, Game & Watch: The Legend of Zelda is a significant improvement over the one-game Super Mario Bros. variant of the handheld.

The other features on the Game & Watch make for fun distractions for fans. Vermin is a classic game from the original handhelds where a character whacks moles, although this version of it features Link as the main protagonist instead of Mr. Game & Watch. The digital clock and timer are also neat – if not very unlikely to be used frequently. Both of the time-keeping apps do allow players to take on bad guys as the time ticks away, which is a nice touch for those that have a desire to kill five minutes (and a handful of Octoroks).

As for the design of the Game & Watch system, it’s expectedly small. The screen occupies much of the face, meaning that the buttons get pushed to the edge of the handheld. This can cause some hand cramping after long play sessions, but it’s spaced out well enough that it’s hard to complain too much. Additionally, the battery can last up to eight hours after being fully charged. This will fluctuate based on the brightness of the screen and the volume being played from the G&W’s speakers, but it’s a good amount of time with all things considered.

This handheld doesn’t do anything new, but it’s not designed to. Instead it acts as a time capsule of sorts that delivers some classic Zelda titles in a portable format. The unit itself is designed to be a timeless Triforce/Link-inspired take on Nintendo first handheld. It’s true that the Game & Watch: The Legend of Zelda is a no-brainer piece for any avid Zelda fan’s collection, but it’s also an affordable and fun way to introduce gamers to the series’ roots. Here’s hoping that Nintendo sticks with these retro consoles in the future, because so far they’ve acted as fantastic loveletters to the franchises they honor.
