Genshin Impact Albedo’s Backstory Explained

With the release of Genshin Impact’s version 2.3 update, Albedo returns to Dragonspine to team up with the traveler in the new “Shadows Amidst Snowstorms” event. Apart from his story quest, the 5-Star Geo swordsman was first featured in version 1.2’s event “The Chalk Prince and the Dragon” and was the version’s first Character Banner, with the Character Banner for 5-Star Cryo Bow-user Ganyu following closely behind. Albedo’s story becomes more and more complicated with every event he leads, adding evidence and speculation to Genshin Impact’s main storyline.

As Mondstadt’s Chief Alchemist, Albedo lends his knowledge and abilities to the Knights of Favonius. He is reclusive in nature and spends most of his time in the quiet of his Dragonspine camp as it gives inspiration to his passion for painting and peace for his experiments. Apart from his famous talents as an alchemist, he is a mystery to the people of Mondstadt. Though Albedo interacts often with his fellow alchemists and lends his help to take care of Klee, a Pyro Catalyst-user, it is unconfirmed who knows of his true identity.

Due to Albedo’s passion for knowledge, he is often researching everything that intrigues him, taking care to note his findings in extensive records. Unfortunately, this makes him a target for those craving knowledge that has been lost over time. Despite his calm and gentle demeanor, Albedo harbors secrets about his past that can either contribute to Teyvat’s protection or aid in its inevitable destruction.

Genshin Impact Version 1.2: Albedo in “The Chalk Prince and the Dragon” Event

Genshin Impact Albedo’s Backstory Explained

After the events of Albedo’s story quest – where the traveler helps Albedo experiment his thesis regarding a seed that fails to grow – he and the traveler become fast companions. “The Chalk Prince and the Dragon” event begins with Sucrose tasking the traveler with finding Albedo and investigating his recent, concerning activities. At his lab located in Genshin Impact’s Dragonspine Region, Albedo gifts the traveler the newly discovered Festering Desire sword, which holds a curse that only a few people – such as the traveler – can withstand. It is discovered later that the sword contains the dragon Durin’s remains, which had been ground into dust before being used to coat the blade.

When prompted by the traveler about his past, Albedo insists that he cannot disclose certain details, though he will explain what he can. According to Paimon, Albedo often likes to “say one thing but do another” which contributes to the idea that he is difficult to read. Despite it all, Albedo confides his trust in the traveler due to his belief that they are both considered “unusual” – hinting that Albedo may know of the traveler’s involvement with the Unknown God in Genshin Impact. This admittance brings up questions regarding Albedo’s past and the specifics on what exactly makes him different from ordinary people.

At the end of the event quest, Albedo muses about how he is able to resonate with the dragon’s life force. It is revealed that Durin was created by Albedo’s master and alchemist, Rhinedottir “Gold” and possessed a power that was on par with the Anemo Archon, Barbatos, or “Venti.” Ultimately slain by Barbatos and Dvalin many years ago, the dragon’s body rests on the mountain of Vindagnyr, leading to the creation and renaming of present-day Dragonspine. Even long destroyed, Durin’s corrupted remains to act as a source of power – or curse – to the beings that reside on Dragonspine. It is with this reveal of Durin’s creation in Genshin Impact that leads to the speculation of Albedo’s relation to its method as an alchemist.

Genshin Impact Version 1.6: Albedo in “Midsummer Island Adventure” Event

Genshin Impact Albedo’s Backstory Explained

As Genshin Impact’s most knowledgeable alchemist, Albedo always seems to know more than he lets on. This is evident in Version 1.6’s event, “Midsummer Island Adventure,” where Klee receives a letter from the Dodo-King threatening to take Dodoco from her. Klee’s first instinct is to find Albedo, but in his absence, she receives help from the Traveler, Jean, and Barbara. After some assistance from Venti, the group arrives at the islands of the mysterious Golden Apple Archipelago.

The team grows as they are joined by Kaeya, Diluc, and Razor, who have all received personalized letters spurring them to come. Albedo – who had also arrived with the group prior but decided to leave the bickering Kaeya and Diluc to their devices – is found shortly after. He seems unbothered by the situation at hand and the so-called Dodo-King, though he points the group in the right direction in unlocking the mechanism on the central platform.

The Dodo-King of the Golden Apple Archipelago in Genshin Impact is revealed to be Klee’s mother, an adventurer named Alice, who prepared the challenges of the mysterious islands in order to please Klee’s penchant for discovery and getting into trouble. Upon the group’s exasperation at such an act, Albedo explains Alice’s character as an “extremely enigmatic and near-omnipotent sorceress,” which implies that he knows her well and most likely discovered the truth early on. In Alice’s pre-recorded message, she regards Albedo as reliable and intelligent. Alice also reveals that she checks in on Albedo and Klee often, highlighting his capacity for empathy, kindness, and family.

Genshin Impact Version 2.3: Albedo in “Shadows Amidst Snowstorms” Event

The traveler returns to Dragonspine once more in Genshin Impact’s Version 2.3 event, “Shadows Amidst Snowstorms.” Originally meeting up with Albedo to ask about fruit preserving machines, the Traveler witnesses the aftermath of a robbery and discovers the thief had stolen important alchemy notes. After plenty of misdirection and unfortunate incidents, such as an unexpected avalanche, the thief is eventually discovered to be a clone of Albedo. The clone is distinguished by a missing star mark on his neck and his subtle differences in character. Despite his nearly perfect act, the clone is inevitably detected by the traveler.

Albedo’s true identity is officially confirmed when he confesses to the Traveler after the string of unexplained events. This was hinted at previously from his character details unlocked via Friendship Level – which can be earned through Daily Commission rewards collected from Genshin Impact’s Adventurer’s Guild – though Albedo explains in-depth how he came to be. Albedo is a synthetic human being created by Rhinedottir using alchemy in an experiment called the Primordial Human Project. The star on his neck is a birthmark as a result of the method of his creation, which he compared to the delicate art of glassblowing. Known as Subject One, Albedo was the sole success of this creation method, with Subject Two – the doppelganger – falling short of expectations and thus, ending up in the stomach of Durin as a failed and abandoned experiment. However, Durin’s corrupted energy revived him into a being strong enough to enact his own desires to replace Albedo and adopt his life.

Subject Two used Durin’s power to create a third Albedo replica from a Whopperflower with mimic abilities, which morphed into the massive Fellflower monster – slightly resembling Genshin Impact’s Cryo Regisvine – upon the fatal wounding of its vessel. The success of this experiment from Subject Two confirmed the possibility for other creations through the same method by Durin’s remains. Albedo is considered to be Rhinedottir’s greatest masterpiece besides Durin. He understands his position well, and in turn, he is able to sympathize with Subject Two, claiming that, had their places been switched, he also would have tried to replace the other in order to fully experience the joy of being brought to life.

At the end of the event, the Traveler seems confident in their ability to distinguish Albedo from Subject Two, though players are unsure if the “Albedo” who speaks to the traveler is truly the real Albedo. There is a moment in time where the traveler and the real Albedo are apart once more, which gives players time to complete a Puffy Snowman in Genshin Impact. Though unconfirmed, it is possible that Subject Two took the opportunity to take Albedo’s place once more. With all the questions that arose in the final act of the event, Genshin Impact players should continue to hope for a timely continuation of Albedo’s story to discover the truth once and for all.
