The release date for Ghostbusters: Afterlife is changing slightly, as the next installment in the Columbia Pictures franchise is moved back a week.

Instead of opening on Nov. 11, Sony Pictures’ Ghostbusters: Afterlife will now debut on Nov. 19. This new date was previously held by Top Gun: Maverick, which was also moved by Paramount. The studio revealed new release dates for Top Gun: Maverick, Mission: Impossible 7 and Jackass Forever, with the three films now debuting May 27, 2022, Sept. 30, 2022 and Feb. 4, 2022, respectively.

A recent Ghostbusters: Afterlife promo confirmed the film’s exclusive theatrical release with the message, “exclusively in movie theaters this November.” Fans have paid close attention to what language is used in the marketing of upcoming feature films, looking to see if a release date is even given, or if the words “exclusively in theaters” appear. The reasoning is to see if a movie’s premiere date has been removed, or if a simultaneous streaming plan is also in place.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife’s early reactions heap praise on the long-awaited film, with director Jason Reitman taking the reins of this successor to 1984’s Ghostbusters and 1989’s Ghostbusters II. Some familiar faces from the franchise return in Afterlife, with Annie Potts’ Janine appearing in the most recent trailer, and Dan Aykroyd’s Ray Stantz making a brief off-camera cameo — though his voice can be clearly heard.
