Gods I Was Strong Then: Robert Baratheon’s Best Quotes in Game of Thrones

Robert Baratheon (Mark Addy) wasn’t King of the Seven Kingdoms for long on Game of Thrones but he made quite the impression. Here are his best quotes!

Out of eight intense seasons of Game of Thrones on HBO he only survived one, but that doesn’t make the show’s first king of the Seven Kingdoms any less memorable. Killed by the Lannisters, like his best friend, Ned Stark, King Robert Baratheon saw life as a gloomy sarcastic mess, nothing like he dreamed of as a strong rebellion leading youth.

The best thing about King Robert? He let everyone, the audience included, know exactly what he thought. This boisterous, wine guzzling, direction yelling, womanizer or a monarch was probably the most fun man or woman viewers ever saw on the throne. Here are just a few of the King’s best moments.

10 “You want to know the horrible truth? I can’t even remember what she looked like. I only know she was the one thing I ever wanted… someone took her away from me, and seven kingdoms couldn’t fill the hole she left behind.”

Did you enjoy Game of Thrones because of the romance? Did you wait and pray for Jamie and Brienne to admit they had feelings for one another? Was it painful to watch as Daenerys continued to spurn Ser Jorah? Well, other than Dany and Jorah, the show’s most tragic unrequited love seemed to be Robert Baratheon and Lyanna Stark.

Robert lost the love of his life before they even got a chance, and the entire continent of Westeros, and beyond, suffered for it. Why did Robert rebel against Daenery’s father? Because he thought the King’s son has kidnapped the love of his life. Kind of romantic for a man to take a whole kingdom in one woman’s name. But, as is clear from Robert’s statement above, this relationship was always more tragic than anything else.

9 “You heard the Hand, the King’s too fat for his armor! Go find the breastplate stretcher! NOW!”

Part of what made King Robert so fun to watch on screen, even if it was only for one season, was his humor. He was the King, he didn’t worry about what other people thought of him or what he looked like, he laughed at himself because no one else was allowed to. Breastplate stretcher? There’s no such thing.

But he, and the audience, enjoyed watching underlings scramble around trying to find one. Robert was loud, he was gruff, he was cruel, but he was upfront about it, and that made him a different sort of character to watch on screen.

8 “Wear it in silence or I’ll honor you again.”

For a little bit of context, this line is delivered by Robert to his wife, Cersei. He slaps her and she declares that she will, “Wear this like a badge of honor.” Obviously Robert is not a fan of his wife or her scathing tongue.

The pair were never well matched, but some of the best scenes in Game of Thrones season one saw husband and wife seated opposite one another going at it in words. This isn’t one of those times when words were enough, and it certainly highlighted the cruelty that Robert possessed, and that probably put him on the throne.

7 “I swear to you, I was never so alive as when I was winning this throne, or so dead as now that I’ve won it.”

Great warriors don’t always make good rulers, but unfortunately, no one told Robert that before his rebellion succeeded. If only Daenerys had been given a chance to speak to Robert before she too sought to rule the Seven Kingdoms.

This line is particularly interesting because it shows that Robert, in some ways, did recognize the type of person he was, he was self-aware (though not often enough). That’s probably why this line stands out amongst many, because Robert did understand who he was, he just came upon the information a little too late for it to be useful to anyone.

6 “They never tell you how they all s**t themselves. They don’t put that part in the songs…”

Here Robert is reminiscing about his first kill. He goes on to say, “Now the Tarlys bend the knee like everyone else. He could have lingered on the edge of the battle with the smart boys, and today his wife would be making him miserable, his sons would be ingrates, and he’d be waking three times in the night to p**s into a bowl.”

Again, he understands himself as a young warrior, but Robert never really got the chance to grow into being an aged king. The horrors of war too are touched upon here, though no one but servants are around to hear about it, thus sending Westeros into battle again.

5 “I’m not trying to honor you, I’m trying to get you to run my kingdom while I eat, drink, and w***e my way to an early grave.”

Here Robert forces best friend Ned to come to King’s Landing and take over as Hand of the King. This is a great idea (for Robert, anyway). As mentioned above, he’s come to realize he’s more of a warrior than a ruler, and he has finally come to ask for more help.

If only this self-awareness didn’t fly away the moment he returned south to the throne. If only Robert remembered why he had gone North to fetch Ned maybe both of them would have survived to serve multiple seasons.

4 “The gods mock the prayers of kings and cowards alike.”

Again Robert is complaining about the head that wears the crown. Once he had it he didn’t really know what to do with it, and it didn’t seem to matter to mortals or the gods. But this line is great because it speaks beyond the character of Robert himself or even the world of Game of Thrones.

It’s one of the King’s best lines because fans can take it out of context, quote it at parties, and squeeze it into unrelated conversations. Quotes are always best when they can be used easily in other lives.

3 “How long can hate hold a thing together?”

Perhaps this line, that King Robert speaks to his wife, Cersei, should be a tagline for the entire Game of Thrones show. While in context the “hate” Robert mentions is his marriage, hate seems to drive many of the power-hungry houses in Westeros most of the time.

Joffrey hates everyone, Daenerys hates the Baratheons and Lannisters, the Starks hate the Lannisters, the Lannisters hate the Starks. How long can a continent be held together by hate? It’s an excellent question and probably explains why recent monarchs have not lasted very long.

2 “Backstabbing doesn’t prepare you for a fight, and that’s all the realm is now.”

When hate and backstabbing are all that a country has in common there’s not much hope for its future. Robert may be searching for a hand to hand fight, but backstabbing is a battle of its own. He would have been a more successful king if he’d been able to look beyond his war hammer and the battlefield.

But, the fact that he could not is what made him the kind of ruler he was, always yelling, also spoiling to hit someone (his wife included). If only he had understood his own words the man might have lived a few more years.

Cersei may be the best at backstabbing, but there was a reason Robert Baratheon led a winning rebellion on the field. Sitting across from his wife Robert asks the above, holing up five fingers.

When he offers his answer, he curls his fingers into a fist. Message received. There are many reasons Robert didn’t last long as King of Westeros, but there are also reasons that he made it to the highest office in the land in the first place as well.
