Batman and his comrades have already had several video game outings to date, but WB Games Montréal’s upcoming Gotham Knights has generated a lot of buzz among DC fans. Set to release next year, Gotham Knights is an action RPG based on DC Comic characters and centering on four members of the Bat Family after the apparent demise of their fearless leader, Batman. Along with the loss of beloved GCPD Commissioner Jim Gordon, these two tragic deaths have plunged Gotham City into a power vacuum, which Batgirl, Nightwing, Robin, and Red Hood must deal with.

Players haven’t been given many details of the game so far, but with a Gotham Knights trailer and a look at gameplay, fans have been quick to try and spot as many clues about the game as possible, poring over the footage and the images that have been released. Much still remains a mystery, but with decades of comic book lore to support theories, this hasn’t stopped players from speculating. One of the greatest points of contention in the glimpses of Gotham Knights given so far is one haunting image – Batgirl in a Court of Owls mask.

Who Are The Court of Owls?

One of the most sinister and secretive cabals of Batman villains, the Court of Owls has appeared in comics, on TV, in Films, and in the form of a playable character in Lego DC Super-Villains. The shady criminal organization is made up of Gotham’s wealthiest citizens, who have existed in the shadows for centuries. The Court of Owls has been secretly pulling the strings to suit their economical and political ends, shaping the city however they see fit with violent and nefarious methods. The secret society has come up against Batman many times before, and the combination of their cutthroat methods and near-mythic status has made them one of the most standout villains in a series known for its memorable bad guys.

The Court of Owls is not just made up of a cohort of Gotham’s oldest and wealthiest families – they also have highly trained assassins called Talons to do their bidding. These fearsome killers are borderline brainwashed to serve the Court and are kept in stasis below Gotham until their leaders have need of them. In previous iterations, Talons have proven to be formidable enemies for the Caped Crusader, as a combination of their extensive training and the electrum serum they are infused with grants them superhuman strength and speed. It also makes them immune to physical pain.

The inclusion of the Court of Owls was confirmed in the story trailer released for Gotham Knights, which featured a creepy nursery rhyme that warns of the Court and their deadly legion of assassins, the Talons. The Court of Owls appears to be a prominent antagonist in Gotham Knights, which will reportedly feature five factions that the prodigies of Batman will have to battle against. The other factions have yet to be revealed, but the trailers have given players glimpses of other infamous Batman baddies like Penguin and Mr. Freeze.

Why Is Batgirl Wearing One Of Their Masks?

With the reputation of the Court of Owls as such a sinister and relentless antagonist to Batman and his allies, fans are wondering why the trailer for Gotham Knights shows Batgirl, one of the four playable characters in the game, wearing one of their signature white owl masks. It’s a disturbing image and hints at many potential possibilities. Although players may not know for certain yet what the circumstances behind Batgirl’s actions may be, there are plenty of details in the DC comics that could reveal the answer.

One of the most infamous storylines is in Batman: The Court of Owls where the Dark Knight is captured by a Talon and taken to a massive labyrinth used by the Court of Owls to kill and torture their victims. Batman survives in the maze for a week without food, and the only source of sustenance is drugged water from a fountain that causes Batman to hallucinate. This torturous and harrowing ordeal affects Batman deeply, with his hallucinations becoming almost as painful as the wounds he sustains. It could be possible that the mask-wearing Batgirl players see in the trailer is merely a hallucination which one of the other playable characters sees while similarly trapped in the Court of Owls’ nightmare maze. This could potentially be a very interesting location and level if it were to be included in Gotham Knights, and it would be a big draw for fans of the comic books.

Of course, there are also other explanations. Batgirl could be wearing the mask to infiltrate the Court of Owls, as all of the members are known to wear them whenever they gather. However, this seems unlikely, as she is still wearing her crime-fighting costume which would surely signpost her identity as clearly as if she carried a large sign that said: “I’m Batgirl.” Another explanation could be that Batgirl has switched allegiances and joined the nefarious crime cabal – DC comics are full of narrative twists and turns that could make this betrayal plausible. However, with an emphasis on cooperative play and the ability to switch between the four playable characters in Gotham Knights, this apparent double-cross does present some logistical problems for gameplay.

What This Could Mean For The Crime Fighting Foursome

While there are still four other groups to be revealed, it seems that the Court of Owls will play a prominent part in the five enemy factions players will face in Gotham Knights. With this being said, it seems like the inclusion of Batgirl wearing the Court of Owls mask in the trailer is significant, and it could potentially have big ramifications for players. If it is merely a hallucination seen while taking on the secretive group, then this could present an intriguing opportunity for the developers to create a trippy, psychedelic section among the darker parts of the game.

If Gotham Knights takes further inspiration from the comics, it may feature a similar origin for Talons recruited by the Court of Owls. In the comics, it’s canon that Batman takes Dick Grayson in when he’s orphaned after his family of circus performers dies. In DC’s 2011 Court of Owls storyline, it is revealed that the Court recruits potential Talons from the circus and that a young Grayson was in training to become one of their lethal assassins. In other comic storylines, the Court of Owls attempts to re-recruit Nightwing and include him among their legion of killers. If this is the case, there could be more crossover between Gotham Knight’s Court of Owls and the four playable members of the Bat Family.

Whatever the reason for Batgirl’s donning of the mask, fans will be eager to find out once more details of Gotham Knights are revealed in the coming months.

Gotham Knights releases in 2022 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X.
