A group of Grand Theft Auto 5: Online players recently gathered together at the LS Car Meet to create a Mario Kart-themed race in the game. Eight years on since its release, GTA Online continues to remain popular with fans thanks to consistent updates from Rockstar, bringing in new content and challenges that keep the game fresh.

Grand Theft Auto Online recently received its first major content release of the year, a car culture-themed update which provided a plethora of new content and features for players to enjoy. The Los Santos Tuners update introduces LS Car Meet, a club that gives its members a space to gather and show off their rides. Aside from being a gathering place, players can also spectate others as they mod their cars and test-drive vehicles on test tracks with friends. Along with quality-of-life improvements, the update also included new cars, races, contracts, and the opportunity for players to purchase their own Auto Shop.

Reddit user iosgamer2day posted a video of their brilliant attempt at bringing Nintendo’s beloved Mario Kart to GTA Online. While fittingly dressed as Mario, the Redditor held a go-kart race in the newly introduced underground map, with one contestant seemingly missing the memo and participating on their motorbike instead. Although the race was missing some classic elements from Mario Kart such as banana peels and Koopa Shells, players were still able to create their own chaos on the race track, with players seen toppling other opponent’s karts over, and even holding the races in reverse.

iosgamer2day stated that the Mario Kart-themed race was held to celebrate the underground test track which was recently released as part of the Los Santos Tuners update for GTA Online. Go-karts were introduced during the Cayo Perico Heist update in December 2020, with Rockstar giving the go-karts away for a brief period during that time. For players looking to do some go-karting of their own around Los Santos, but didn’t manage to snag a free go-kart, the vehicles can be purchased at the Southern San Andreas Super Autos shop for the hefty sum of $895k for the Veto Classic, or $995k for the Veto Modern.

GTA Online players continue to find new ways to make their own fun, aided by the plethora of updates Rockstar continues to provide the game in the form of new cars and features. While the Los Santos Tuners update is undoubtedly keeping players busy, fans can also look forward to the next-gen console upgrade for GTA Online, expected to arrive sometime this fall.
