In the Harry Potter series, there are likely hundreds of spells that wizards and witches have at their disposal. While only maybe a hundred or so are featured in the books, it’s made clear that spells can do anything from unlocking doors to seriously hurting people.
While many spells are useful in the day to day, there are certain spells that are highly deadly. On the other side of this, there are actually some pretty adorable and endearing spells that would make life a little sweeter.
10 Deadliest: The Imperius Curse
This is one of the three Unforgivable Curses that is banned by the Ministry of Magic. By saying Imperio, the spellcaster removes the fee will and autonomy of the victim and is able to control them.
While not always deadly or violent, the caster often has nearly complete command over the other person, and this means they could get them to do deadly things to themselves or to another person.
9 Adorable: Cheering Charm
The Cheering Charm is only mentioned in passing in the books, but it would be quite a useful incantation for a person having a bad day. It’s often charms in the books that are the most kindhearted spells, and the Cheering Charm is no different.
This spell helps the person feel happy and content, and while this could obviously be harmful in excess, being able to cheer yourself or someone else up would be nice.
8 Deadliest: Diffindo
Diffindo is actually a rather versatile and useful spell in many ways. Known as the severing charm, casting this spell will lead to cutting, ripping, or tearing the desired object. Usually, this spell is helpful in doing things like cutting rope or plants.
But, it could also be used for sinister purposes. The ability of the spell to cut so precisely could definitely cause harm to a living being.
7 Adorable: Wingardium Leviosa
This is probably one of the most well-known spells from the series, and fans still enjoy saying these words and trying to pronounce them the right way as Hermione instructed. Also called the hover charm, by using this incantation witches and wizards can cause items to levitate.
While also very useful, the idea of being able to send objects into the air, such as cups or pencils or any other variety of things, is definitely appealing and whimsical.
6 Deadliest: Fiendfyre
This might be one of the most destructive curses ever mentioned in the Harry Potter books. It’s one of the most powerful spells mentioned in the books, so powerful in fact that it can destroy a Horcrux.
Casting this spell creates enchanted flames that can destroy anything they come in contact with. The flames take on the shape of large magical creatures, and it can be nearly impossible to stop this curse of dark magic once it’s cast.
5 Adorable: Cushioning Charm
This is another adorable charm that can be used for a few different reasons. The incantation for the spell is Molliare, and it’s often used to cushion broomsticks to make them comfortable to ride on.
But, this spell would also be handy if you had to sit on hard bleachers or chairs for a while or needed to cushion a fall.
4 Deadliest: Sectumsempra
While there are other spells that are technically deadlier than this one, there is something particularly scary about this curse as it’s so gruesome. This spell was created by Severus Snape, and it’s a particularly cruel and gross curse. It causes the victim to be cut with large lacerations that can lead to a victim quickly bleeding out.
The fact that Snape created this spell when he was just a teenager is definitely disturbing. The effect of this curse looks as if the victim has been attacked with deep sword gashes.
3 Adorable: Oculus Reparo
This is another simple spell that really only has one specific purpose, but this is what makes it cute. When fans first learn about this spell it’s because Hermione uses it to fix Harry’s broken glasses on their first train ride on the Hogwarts Express.
It’s so endearing because it shows that there are specific spells for even the most random and mundane life moments.
2 Deadliest: Avada Kedavra
Of course, the most deadly spell of all has to be Avada Kedavara. Also called the Killing Curse, it’s the most notorious and worst of the three Unforgivable Curses.
It takes a lot of malice to even be able to cast this spell and get it to work. But, if successful, the curse will create a flash of green light and cause instant death.
1 Adorable: Crinus Muto
This is a lesser-known spell that even many committed Potter fans might not recognize. While mentioned in the books, the incantation itself is not given. This is a transfiguration spell that allows the caster to change hair color and hairstyle.
This would be a very fun spell to use and allow for people to change what their hair looked like often and with little effort and no permanent alteration.
