Harry Potter 5 Reasons Professor Flitwick Was The Most Underrated Teacher (& 5 Reasons It Was Professor Sprout)

It goes without saying that there are a lot of teachers at Hogwarts School Of Witchcraft And Wizardry. Considering how big the castle is and how many students walk through its halls, the number of teachers at Hogwarts never seems like quite enough. Students and fans spend a lot of time focused on the likes of Dumbledore and the heads of Gryffindor (McGonagall) and Slytherin (Snape), but there are a few teachers who are wildly overlooked. In this case, the focus is on Professors Flitwick and Sprout.

Admittedly, the books do a better job of including Professor Flitwick and Professor Sprout since the films force them toward irrelevance – which is a shame, since these teachers (both in and out of the film) are pretty good. So without further delay, here are five reasons why Flitwick is the school’s most underrated teacher and five reasons Sprout is.

10 FLITWICK: He Was Part Goblin

To most Harry Potter viewers, Professor Flitwick just seems like a little person. Aside from a few unique features, he doesn’t resemble one of the goblins seen counting money inside Gringotts, but he is actually the distant descendent of one.

While it occurred before the events of the series, Flitwick was most probably subject to a similar prejudice to that of muggle-borns from an early age. Landing a position at Hogwarts was a great success for those deemed second class citizens by many, and this is something Flitwick can always be proud of.

9 SPROUT: She Was Funny

While a lot of Hogwarts teachers are able to drop the occasional one-liner that cracks up their students, Pomona Sprout had a more natural gift for comedy than many of her colleagues.

For example, she allowed her students to swear if they were bitten by the Venomous Tentacula, and she ridiculed Neville for “neglecting his earmuffs” during a lesson about Mandrakes.

8 FLITWICK: He Was One Of The Most Intelligent In The School

After being accepted into Hogwarts, Flitwick was quickly able to prove himself as an incredibly intelligent student. The Sorting Hat struggled to choose between Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff, but we can assume his intellect tipped the scales.

He and Dumbledore were both known to be model students, while Flitwick was himself a dueling champion during his time at Hogwarts.

7 SPROUT: She Collaborated With Neville

Many years after the Battle Of Hogwarts, Neville himself a job as a Hogwarts professor, teaching Herbology. This means that the two are currently both teaching Herbology at Hogwarts, since it’s never been stated if Sprout retired at some point or not.

While she may have once laughed at Neville for his actions and for how much of an unlucky klutz he used to be, she probably ended up being very proud of his determination.

6 FLITWICK: He Taught Harry’s Parents

Something that goes mostly unmentioned is the length of Flitwick’s teaching career. His characterization in The Philosopher’s Stone makes it very clear that he is an old man, but his younger redesign after this makes things a little more ambiguous.

Flitwick has been in the magical academia for so long that he actually taught charms to the likes of Sirius Black, James and Lilly Potter and even Severus Snape. It must have been strange to end up teaching alongside his student.

5 SPROUT: She Used Herbology In The Battle Of Hogwarts

As she was head of Herbology, it’s no surprise that Herbology was Sprout’s forte. It was her specialist subject to such an extent, however, that this ended up being her primary tool in the Battle Of Hogwarts instead of a regular wand.

She threw various dangerous plants down from the walls of Hogwarts to help ward of the Death Eaters and their allies. It’s a pity this wasn’t shown in the actual film, though she does have a brief appearance in the movies’ grand finale.

4 FLITWICK: He Was More Lenient Than Most Teachers

While Sprout’s decision to allow swearing in her class suggests that she was probably a little more lenient than the likes of McGonagall, Flitwick was known for his patience and kindness to students.

He rarely gave detention or deducted house points, and was known to give homework to students instead of detentions. He was also regarded as a great teacher who would see his students through their exams well.

3 SPROUT: She Saved Students From Being Petrified

While Flitwick had been involved in wizarding education for years and played an important part in the Battle Of Hogwarts, he didn’t have the same direct, life-saving impact of Sprout during The Chamber Of Secrets.

Using her Herbology skills, she was able to grow the Mandrakes that would form the Mandrake Restorative Draught and save many of her students.

2 FLITWICK: He’s Played By Warwick Davis

One of the most well-loved actors in film history is Warwick Davis. Not only is he fantastic at his job, he seems like a genuinely lovely man who really enjoys his roles.

In Harry Potter, he plays both Flitwick and Griphook, while he can be found across a multitude of franchises. This includes at least ten characters from the Star Wars universe.

1 SPROUT: She Was Played By Miriam Margolyes

At the same time, it’s hard to ignore the fact that Professor Sprout was brought to life by the incredibly funny actress Miriam Margolyes.

Obviously, most Potter fans associate her to the franchise, but she also took on a major role in Scorsese’s 1993 romantic film The Age Of Innocence. On top of her acting roles, she has taken a strong stance in political activism, supporting all that is good and right.
