Lupin is one character from Harry Potter than many fans love even if he’s more of a side character. As one of the Marauder’s, many fans are interested in him and his backstory.
Lupin can be a really brave, kind, and inspiring character, but there were also times that fans felt sorry for him because he faced a lot of hardships and traumas in his life. Here are some of his most inspiring and most tragic moments.
10 Inspiring: How good of a professor he was
Lupin was the only truly qualified and good Defense Against the Dark Arts professors that Harry ever had. He worked hard to teach his students the things they needed to know, and he also taught them with a lot of compassion and concern for their well-being. One good example was how kind he was to Neville when Snape said Neville was a horrible student.
9 Felt Sorry: When Snape had it out for him
There was a lot of bad blood between Snape and Lupin because of their pasts when they were Hogwarts students. However, Lupin never really did anything horrible to Snape, and most of the bullying was directly James and Sirius. Snape was rather petty and pathetic to try and out Lupin as a werewolf all year, and then when he actually did so it was uncalled for.
8 Inspiring: That he tried to make sure James and Sirius behaved
The Marauders were known for being rulebreakers during their time at Hogwarts. However, Lupin did try his best to keep James and Sirius from going too far.
While he might not have always been able to, the fact that he did try to stand up to his friends when they had such strong personalities is admirable in many ways. It’s similar to how Neville tried to stand up to the trio.
7 Felt Sorry: How hard it was to deal with being a werewolf
There are many horrible and sad things about being a werewolf in the wizarding world. But, beyond the bigotry and prejudice, the physical reality of turning into a werewolf is awful. Lupin had to deal with the painful transformations all alone for part of his childhood. While in adulthood the Wolfsbane potion made it less painful, the process still made him sick and would have been hard to deal with.
6 Inspiring: When he tried to be there for Harry
When Harry learns that Lupin was close friends with his parents, he sees him as a mentor. Lupin clearly cares about Harry’s well-being, and he looks out for him while he’s teaching at Hogwarts. He also took extra time to teach Harry how to produce a Patronus. The fact that he cared about Harry was definitely inspiring.
5 Felt Sorry: When Sirius Black died
When Lupin learns that Sirius is an innocent man, it’s a great moment for him because he finally has one of his best friends back. So, when Sirius dies only two years later at the Department of Mysteries, this is a devastating blow.
Lupin has lost many people he cares about in his life, but getting someone back and then losing them again for good is one of the saddest things of all.
4 Inspiring: When he fought in the battle of Hogwarts
It’s not surprising that Lupin would show up to the Battle of Hogwarts because he’d been so involved with fighting against Voldemort for all of his adult life. However, this doesn’t make this any less inspiring. The fact that both he and Tonks were willing to risk their lives even though they had a baby boy was inspiring and heartbreaking.
3 Felt Sorry: The prejudiced he faced for being a werewolf
The physical pain and chronic illness element of being a werewolf would be really difficult, but being a werewolf comes with even more hardships. Because he’s a werewolf, Lupin struggled to find jobs and was met with bigotry everywhere he went. He didn’t even get to keep his job at Hogwarts because of prejudice from parents, and, given how good of a person Lupin was, this was depressing.
2 Inspiring: When he joined the first and second Order of the Phoenix
Anyone who was central to the fight against Voldemort and his followers is an inspiring character from the Harry Potter books. Lupin was definitely brave and especially admirable because he was a member of both iterations of the Order. Even though he lost so much the first time, he wasn’t deterred from joining up again and doing everything he could to help.
1 Felt Sorry: That he and Tonks both died too young
One of the most tragic things that happened in the books is when both Lupin and Tonks are killed during the Battle of Hogwarts. They left behind their young son, and it’s a sad coming full-circle moment that reflects Harry being orphaned as a baby. Lupin and Tonks were both good people who didn’t deserve to die so young.
