Harry Potter: Hermione & Ron’s Worst Fights, Ranked

Hermione and Ron might seem like soulmates, but it wasn’t always smooth sailing for them in the Harry Potter series.

Hermione and Ron might be the main romantic pairing from the Harry Potter series, but they don’t have an easy relationship even through their many years as friends. While they do support and care for one another, they often bicker and fight. Though most of these fights were rather harmless and didn’t lead to any issues between them, they also had some explosive disagreements that almost ended their relationship for good.

Some of these arguments involved only the two of them, such as when romantic rivals like Viktor Krum and Lavender Brown were in the picture. However, some also included fights between the trio in general that impacted the friendship between Harry, Ron, and Hermione.

9 All The Times Ron Called Hermione A Know-It-All

A lot of Ron and Hermione’s fights happened on a daily basis and were rather small and inconsequential. However, because they happened to consistently, they are worth pointing out as a key element of their relationship dynamic.

Ron often called Hermione a know-it-all, while Hermione, for her part, often got annoyed at Ron for being irresponsible and a little reckless. In some ways, this is one of the main things about Ron and Hermione’s friendship that doesn’t make any sense.

8 Constant Bickering Over Homework

Just like getting annoyed over one another’s personality, Ron and Hermione got into many little spats over homework. Ron would often procrastinate and not do his work. When this happened, Hermione would tell him to get it done which he didn’t appreciate. But, when it needed to be finished, he would then expect Hermione to go out of her way to help him.

Their vastly different personalities often didn’t mesh, and they were always getting under one another’s skin in a way that sometimes drove Harry up the wall.

7 When Ron (and Harry) Wouldn’t Talk To Her Over The Firebolt

While Ron and Hermione got into many issues just between the two of them, the trio as a whole also had some big arguments. One of the biggest was when Hermione told McGonagall about the Firebolt to try to keep Harry safe, but Harry and Ron were not pleased with this at all.

They both were so mad they didn’t speak to her, and it wasn’t really far given she was just worried about Sirius Black. Thankfully, Hagrid chastised them both, and they saw they were putting an inanimate object over one of their best friends.

6 Ron Saying Hermione Didn’t Have Any Friends

Ron and Hermione make an unlikely pairing because they couldn’t stand each other at first. Ron thought Hermione was bossy and difficult while Hermione thought Ron was rude and lazy. So, when Hermione upstaged Ron in Flitwick’s class, he wasn’t pleased.

He talked about how unlikeable she was and how she had no friends, and Hermione went to cry in the bathroom. Strangely enough, however, this upsetting moment is what ends up bringing the trio together. Without this fight, Hermione and Ron would never have been friends and eventually in a romantic relationship.

5 Disagreeing Over House-Elves

Hermione is someone who works extremely hard and cares a lot about equality and fairness. Though Ron isn’t a bad person, he is a bit more used to the status quo and lazy about rocking the boat. So, when Hermione starts up S.P.E.W., both Ron and Harry are vaguely annoyed. This is a bit of a wedge between Ron and Hermione for years as they disagree with one another on the situation of house-elves.

Because of this, it’s fitting that Hermione only kisses Ron after he finally shows more compassion for the house-elves in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

4 Ron Getting Jealous Over Krum At The Yule Ball

Hermione and Ron aren’t very good at recognizing how they feel about one another, and given that they are just teens, this makes sense. They clearly have a crush on one another but aren’t able to deal with this or talk about it. It’s no surprise then that Ron gets jealous when Hermione goes to the ball with Viktor Krum, even though he didn’t really consider asking Hermione at first.

However, the way he tries to ruin the experience for her isn’t good. She ends up crying when he accuses her of “fraternizing with the enemy,” and it causes a bit of a rift between them even if they don’t talk about it much afterward. It’s an example of Ron really needing to mature before they can be together.

3 Hermione Attacks Ron With Birds

While Ron can be overly jealous and immature, Hermione isn’t always that emotionally intelligent either and her emotions can also get the better of her. Two years after their argument over Krum, Ron actually starts dating Lavender.

He doesn’t go about this very well, and Hermione is right to be upset. However, she takes things way too far when she conjures up birds to attack him. This is a rough time in their friendship as romantic jealousies get in the way, and it’s also a time that shows Ron isn’t very capable of handling romantic relationships well.

2 Their Friendship Nearly Ending Over Their Pets

Ron and Hermione have so many fights that nearly ruin their friendship, it’s sometimes hard to imagine how they would make it as a married couple for so many years. Before romantic rivals enter the picture, their friendship nearly stops over Scabbers and Crookshanks.

Ron blames Hermione for everything Crookshanks does, and Hermione doesn’t try too hard to keep Crookshanks away from Scabbers. They end up at each other’s throats, and even Harry isn’t able to help them mend things completely at first.

1 Ron Wanting Hermione To Choose Him Over Harry

The biggest fight between Ron and Hermione is also the biggest fight between the trio. Under the influence of the locket Horcrux, Ron becomes jealous and sullen, and he resents the seemingly impossible task they’ve been sent to complete. He ends up blaming Harry and leaving them, and he asks Hermione to come with him. It’s a nearly impossible choice for her to make, but she believes she has to help Harry find the Horcruxes.

When Ron eventually marks his way back to them, Harry is much quicker to forgive him than Hermione is. Yet, despite this, they do survive this large crack in their bond.
