Hawaii Five-0 was on the air for 10 seasons before its conclusion in 2020. The team was led by the brave but sometimes reckless Steve McGarrett. McGarrett and his partner, Danny, were best friends but they were also known for their bickering. The team added and lost members over the years, but audiences could bet that plenty of action and comedy, and personal stories about the main characters, would be in store.

Some seasons do better than others; the same is said for episodes. The best episodes out of a season tend to do well because of interesting storylines, action, or just standing out for their own merit.

10 Season 8 – “Na La ‘Ilio” (8.0)

Five-0 helps with a drug bust, and that includes working with an adorable police dog named Eddie. Unfortunately, Eddie’s handler is killed, and Eddie is also injured, but Steve gives the dog a new home with him by the end of the episode. Plus, Steve’s also faced with an eager Navy SEAL returned home, Junior, who wants to join Five-0. At first, Steve declines, but Junior is persistent enough to get Steve to change his mind. With Kono and Chin now gone, Junior is one of the first new recruits.

9 Season 7 – “Hana Komo Pae” (8.3)

While Steve hosts a poker game at his house with the guys, Danny’s chaperoning a school dance and being overprotective of his daughter, Grace. Especially this episode, where he’s just found out that Grace has a boyfriend, and that it’s Will, the son of Danny’s Five-0 co-worker, Lou. However, when the dance is crashed by some bad guys looking to kidnap one of the students, who is the son of a diplomat, things get serious fast. Danny and Will must work together to get help and save the students, and in the process, it gets Danny to better accept Will as Grace’s significant other.

8 Season 10 – “A ‘Ohe Ia E Loa’a Aku, He Ulua Kapapa No Ka Moana” (8.5)

The penultimate episode to the series finale finds McGarrett receiving a package left to him by his deceased mother, and later wondering if it’s time he embark on a new chapter and leave Five-0. McGarrett doesn’t get much time to mull things over this episode, however, as the team becomes involved in going after a good Samaritan who saved a family during a robbery.

The Samaritan, who is ex-military, is now on the run not just from military police but also the brother of the robber he killed, who wants revenge.

7 Season 9 – “Hana Mao ‘Ole Ka Ua O Waianae” (8.6)

Recurring villain Aaron Wright, the brother of the hacker Ian Wright (Nick Jonas), is once again making trouble and Five-0 is out to stop him. This time, he’s sold some deadly weapons, and in exchange for Five-0 going easy on him, he helps the team track them down. Elsewhere, Junior is looking for his missing father. The episode’s end provides a cliffhanger, as a shooter places Steve’s and Jerry’s lives in danger and the outcome is left unknown until the premiere of Season 10.

6 Season 3 – “I Ka Wa Mamua” (8.8)

This episode contains flashbacks between an old case of Danny’s from 2001, and the present-day case that he and Steve are working on. When Danny is forced to stay completely still, or else a bomb will blow, Steve encourages his best friend to finish the story he was previously telling him. As it turns out, Danny lost his partner in the story of his old case, and he later named his daughter Grace after her. Not only that, but the day his partner died, it was also the day the horrible events of 9/11 took place. An intense episode, it ends on a light-hearted note as Danny makes it to the father-daughter dance in time to be with Grace.

5 Season 5 – “Ina Paha” (8.8)

While being held captive by Wo Fat, his archenemy, Steve gets both a look at what life may have been like for himself and his team had his father been saved back during the events of the “Pilot” episode, and at how personal Wo Fat has made things between them. Steve is put through more than just the wringer in this episode; he’s literally tortured and even has to confront some painful taunts that Wo Fat throws his way, with Wo Fat even referring to Steve as “brother” and calling Doris McGarrett “their” mother.

Steve gets closure once and for all by declaring Wo Fat is not his brother, and kills him, finally ending the storyline between the two. At least, for a little while.

4 Season 6 – “O Ke Ali’i Wale No Ka’u Makemake” (8.8)

The episode begins with Steve visiting with the father of his archenemy, Wo Fat. However, Season 6’s final episode primarily focuses on the drug epidemic that is plaguing Hawaii. A friend of Nahele’s is one of the latest victims, and Steve and Danny end up going undercover as pilots. However, disaster strikes when Steve is gravely injured during the flight, forcing the two best friends to land on the beach. Danny goes after those responsible with a vengeance, and ends up at the hospital, where he volunteers his liver to save Steve’s life, as Steve’s liver is in terrible disrepair. Luckily, the season finale doesn’t leave audiences wondering if Steve will survive, as they’re reassured that both Steve and Danny will be fine, even supplying one of their famous arguments in the final moments.

3 Season 2 – “Ha’i’ole” (8.9)

The Season 2 premiere picks up right where the Season 1 finale left off. Steve breaks out of prison, setting out to clear his name once and for all. He finds help from his team in Danny, Kono, and Chin, and even receives aid from Max, the medical examiner, and Joe, his old family friend and his trainer from his days in the Navy. Steve is ultimately cleared, and the new Governor of Hawaii reinstates the team, minus Kono, who is still under investigation. The notorious villain Wo Fat escapes, but made several returns in the episodes to come, throwing Steve for a loop each time.

2 Season 4 – “Ho’onani Makuakane” (9.0)

This Season 4 episode takes a deep dive into history when Five-0 stops a man from murdering a Pearl Harbor veteran. There’s more to the story than meets the eye; the man, David, had believed the veteran to be his father’s murderer, who was killed decades before. However, as Five-0 investigates, they uncover the real killer, and manage to find David’s family’s stolen katana and return it to them.

The episode does a great job of exploring the horrors of an Oahu internment camp during World War II, and even makes a connection to McGarrett when David tells him that he knew his grandfather, who was killed during the events of Pearl Harbor.

1 Season 1 – “Oia’i’o” (9.1)

The season finale was ranked the highest in the first season, and it’s no question as to why. Five-0 is left in shambles after the murder of Laura Hills. Steve is on the run to prove his innocence, Kono finds herself in big trouble when she’s identified in a line-up for a previous act of breaking the law to save her cousin, and Danny’s got a dilemma of his own regarding reuniting with his ex-wife. By the episode’s conclusion, both Steve and Kono are in jail, Danny misses his plane back to New Jersey, opting to stay and help his friends, and Chin has gone back to HPD, with Five-0 dismantled and their fate left unknown.
