Helen Mirren Wants To Return To Fast & Furious

While she didn’t get much to do in The Fate Of The Furious, Helen Mirren most certainly wants to come back for the next entry. The Fast And The Furious has proven – against all odds – to be one of Hollywood’s most durable franchises. The original was a modestly budgeted riff on Point Break that went on to become a sleeper hit due to the slick action and charisma of the young cast.

It didn’t appear the series would last long from there. Vin Diesel skipped the successful but critically lambasted sequel 2 Fast 2 Furious. A new lead character was drafted in for Tokyo Drift, but Diesel’s last-minute cameo convinced producers to reunite the original cast for the fourth entry. The series has gone from strength to strength from there, and audiences keep flocking back to its mix of outlandish action and sentimental melodrama.

Helen Mirren surprised everyone by declaring herself a fan of the franchise in 2015, and she signed on to play Magdalene Shaw in The Fate Of The Furious shortly after. Sadly, she only appeared in a few scenes, but Mirren told Yahoo! in a recent interview she’d love to come back, stating “I hope so. I’m sort of quietly maneuvering. But I love it, it would be brilliant. I love that character.” Magdalene didn’t get much action last time, but Mirren insists she must get behind the wheel for the next entry. “This time, definitely. Absolutely. Essential, instead of being stuck in [the back seat].”

Mirren was a lot of fun during her appearance in Fate, so her return is a must. It will be interesting to see what side of the law she falls on however. Magdalene is the mother of Owen and Deckard Shaw, the villains of parts six and seven respectively. Deckard (Jason Statham) is responsible for the death of Han, but the character seemingly redeemed himself in Fate when he rescued Dom’s baby and helped the gang bring down villain Cipher (Charlize Theron). Owen also helped with the rescue, but it would be strange if the two clans just forgot their past differences and became friends.

There’s a chance Mirren could return for the upcoming spinoff featuring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s character Hobbs instead. Jason Statham is confirmed to be returning as Deckard after the two actors shared strong chemistry in the previous entry. A post-credit scene was actually filmed for Fate teasing a solo movie with the two, but producer Vin Diesel allegedly nixed it.

The Fast “family” has appeared fractured in recent years, with Johnson first calling out Diesel’s behaviour on the set of part eight, and co-star Tyrese later launching into Johnson for accepting the solo movie and delaying the next sequel. Fast & Furious 9 was thus pushed back to 2020, but on the upside, Justin Lin – director of parts three to six – is returning to round out the series, which is due to finish up at part ten.

It’s pronounced Paw-rick, not Pad-raig. Now that’s out of the way, a brief introduction. Padraig has been writing about film online since 2012, when a friend asked if he’d like to contribute the occasional review or feature to their site. A part-time hobby soon blossomed into a career when he discovered he really loved writing about movies, TV and video games – he even (arguably) had a little bit of talent for it. He has written words for Den of Geek, Collider, The Irish Times and Screen Rant over the years, and can discuss anything from the MCU – where Hawkeye is clearly the best character – to the most obscure cult b-movie gem, and his hot takes often require heat resistant gloves to handle. He’s super modern too, so his favorite movies include Jaws, Die Hard, The Thing, Ghostbusters and Batman. He can be found as i_Padds on Twitter making bad puns.
