HIMYM Casts Favorite Episodes Explained

The story of Ted Mosby’s search for love is one of the most popular sitcoms in recent history, and the How I Met Your Mother cast has revealed their personal favorite episodes. Spanning nine seasons from 2005-2014, there is an impressive total of 208 episodes to choose from. Although the later seasons declined in quality, HIMYM boasts a terrific narrative hook that ensured the finale was a must-watch.

Created by Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, HIMYM revolves around Future Ted (Bob Saget) telling his kids the epic story of how he eventually met their mother. Back in present-day New York, Ted (Josh Radnor) navigates the pitfalls of dating alongside his best friends. After years of heartbreak, career hurdles, and strained friendships, Ted finally comes face to face with his future wife, Tracy Mosby (Cristin Milioti), in the show’s ambitious final season, set almost entirely over Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) and Robin’s (Cobie Smulders) wedding weekend.

Although How I Met Your Mother’s controversial finale deeply divided viewers, the sitcom remains an incredibly fun watch that’s full of memorable storylines. Reflecting on the show with Entertainment Weekly, the HIMYM cast named their favorite episodes. Some choices are more surprising than others, with a selection that mixes humor and pathos, including a series highlight, which established one of the show’s best running gags.

Josh Radnor – “The Time Travelers”

Season 8 is arguably HIMYM’s weakest, but Radnor has chosen a standout story from the season as his favorite episode. Ted debates whether he should go to Robots vs Wrestlers alone, imagining a conversation with future versions of himself and Barney. Radnor said, “That was such a weird, interesting, sad episode. It was haunting and super hard to film, but it was great.” It’s clear why he loves How I Met Your Mother’s “The Time Travelers,” as Ted fearing his search for love is futile and that he’ll never be happy is painfully relatable. Although the character became less likable as the show went on, Radnor’s performance was consistently strong. The ending, where he imagines running to the mother’s apartment 45 days before meeting her because he’d give anything for that extra time, is beautifully played and effectively foreshadows Tracy’s fate. Radnor also loved Ted and Barney singing “For the Longest Time” with their future selves. This was undoubtedly difficult to film, making the episode a particularly rewarding experience for Radnor.

Neil Patrick Harris – “Girls vs Suits”

When asked about his favorite HIMYM episode, Harris responded, “I love that 100th episode song-and-dance… That was fun to film.” It’s a milestone for any actor, and Harris absolutely steals the show as Barney. While Ted briefly dates a university student, How I Met Your Mother’s Cindy (Rachel Bilson), he inadvertently finds himself more interested in her unseen roommate, who just so happens to be the mother. It’s an amusing story of missed connections, but Barney’s attempts to seduce a suit-hating bartender provide the biggest laughs. The episode culminates in the spectacular musical number “Nothing Suits Me Like a Suit” in which all the leads “suit up.” Harris has performed in several Broadway shows, so this was a wonderful opportunity for him to showcase his vocal skills in HIMYM.

Cobie Smulders – “Slap Bet”

Smulders’ favorite HIMYM episode is also one of the show’s best. When Robin mysteriously refuses to step foot in a mall, Barney makes a slap bet with Marshall (Jason Segel) over the secret she’s hiding. The gang eventually learn she was a Canadian teenage pop star named Robin Sparkles, prompting the hilarious music video for “Let’s Go to the Mall”. Smulders told Entertainment Weekly, “Any time Robin Sparkles is in an episode, I like it. Especially when we get to shoot music videos… My backup band are all crew members or writers… [“Slap Bet”] was new territory, so that was a big one for me.” Including the crew in the videos is a fun idea, and it’s great to see how a younger Robin compares to her present-day self. Barney loses the slap bet, introducing the brilliant running gag of the ever-present threat that Marshall may slap him at any point in the series.

Jason Segel – “Bad News”

A massive departure in tone from Smulders’ choice, Segel’s favorite HIMYM episode is one of its saddest. He stated, “I was very honored to get the arc where my father passes away.” The story focuses on Marshall’s concern he won’t be able to have children and builds on another major How I Met Your Mother running gag with Barney’s doppelgänger, a fertility doctor. Marshall fears impending bad news, with the clever incorporation of a fourth-wall-breaking countdown. Starting with 50, descending numbers are hidden in every scene, until reaching the final, harrowing moment where Lily (Alyson Hannigan) tearfully tells her husband his father has died from a heart attack. The scene was improvised and Segel was unaware of the huge plot twist, making an incredibly poignant moment even more memorable. Segel’s reaction is perfect, and it leads to a wonderful arc in the latter half of season 6 that sees Marshall search for renewed meaning in his life.

Alyson Hannigan – “Three Days of Snow”

HIMYM Casts Favorite Episodes Explained

This lighter episode from How I Met Your Mother season 4 perfectly encapsulates Lily and Marshall’s relationship. Set during a three-day blizzard, there’s some effective misdirection as the couple strives to keep their silly, yet sweet traditions alive. Hannigan revealed, “The moment when, at the airport, when [Jason Segel] comes in with the orchestra, that’s forever in my heart. I was pregnant at the time too, so I was highly emotional.” It’s a wonderful display of Lily and Marshall’s love, and the feel-good episode also boasts a memorable subplot with Ted and Barney running MacLaren’s Pub for the night. They have a dream of buying a bar together and, brilliantly, calling it “Puzzles,” which briefly becomes a reality in season 7. “Three Days of Snow” isn’t the most dramatic episode for Hannigan to choose, like Lily and Marshall’s breakup in “Come On”, but it’s HIMYM at its most quirky and affectionate.

Bob Saget – “The Mermaid Theory”

He never appears onscreen, but Bob Saget narrates almost every episode of HIMYM, except for when Radnor plays Future Ted in the finale. He named season 6’s “The Mermaid Theory” as his favorite HIMYM episode, which he recorded while performing a play in New York. Saget recalled, “I was like, ‘Oh my God, I’m so heavy this week. This is crazy.’ It was all narration.” The episode does have more narration than most stories, as Future Ted struggles to accurately remember a fight between Barney and Lily. It’s not the most notable episode, though it does effectively tease future plotlines, mainly Lily’s pregnancy. Ted’s concern about spending time with Zoey (Jennifer Morrison) without angering her husband gives the spotlight to one of HIMYM’s best recurring guest stars, the Captain (Kyle McLachlan). The overall story questioning men and women’s ability to be platonic friends is also a clever play on the premise of When Harry Met Sally.

The HIMYM actors have all made admirable choices in naming their favorite episodes. However, it may surprise viewers that classics like “The Pineapple Incident” and Carter Bays’ favorite, “How Your Mother Met Me,” weren’t mentioned. Regardless of the finale’s mixed reception, these episodes demonstrate the boldness and creativity that made How I Met Your Mother such a beloved show.
