How Captain Marvel 2 Can Setup The MCU’s XMen

Through the addition of new characters, Captain Marvel 2 can directly set up the introduction of the X-Men into the MCU in Phase 5. Due to the Fox-Disney deal, the door is now open for Marvel’s Merry Mutants to exist in the same cinematic universe as the Avengers, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, and Captain Marvel.

Since Marvel generally plans their movies way in advance, it could be several years before they officially join the fold, but Marvel can lay the groundwork in Phase 4. While some may be expecting Marvel to save its mutant heroes and villains for their X-Men movies, there’s a good chance that Marvel may build toward them gradually. Considering that Marvel made a handful of solo superhero movies before making The Avengers, a similar approach could be taken with the X-Men. But, Marvel won’t necessarily need to make individual movies for each of its X-Men before uniting the team in a movie. Marvel may only need one film to set them up properly.

One movie that feels well-positioned to set the stage for the MCU’s X-Men is Captain Marvel 2. Directed by Nia DaCosta and currently scheduled for a 2022 release, the upcoming Phase 4 installment will send Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers on another cosmic adventure, which will serve as her third big-screen appearance in the MCU. Based on her comic book history and where the movie may take the character, Captain Marvel 2 can introduce new heroes that will pave the way for the X-Men. Here’s how that can work in Carol Danvers’ second solo movie.

Captain Marvel 2 Could Introduce The X-Men’s Rogue

How Captain Marvel 2 Can Setup The MCU’s XMen

Surprisingly, one of the most heavily rumored new characters for Captain Marvel 2 is Rogue, who is an A-list hero and a flagship member of the X-Men in Marvel Comics. To those unfamiliar with her history, she may seem like an odd fit for Captain Marvel 2, but the two characters share an important connection that could be translated to the MCU. When Rogue first appeared, she was a power-stealing mutant villain sent by Mystique to take Carol’s powers and use them to fight the Avengers. The problem though is that Rogue taking Carol’s abilities had some unexpected (and unintended) side-effects. She also took Carol’s identity. Carol wasn’t the same even when Professor X restored her memories. Profoundly affected by everything that happened, Carol left Earth. As for Rogue, she kept Carol’s powers for a number of years.

Assuming that Captain Marvel 2 will be set at least partially on Earth, Carol’s relationship with Rogue could be brought to life in Captain Marvel 2 with Rogue acting as a secondary villain working for the main antagonist. At some point in the movie, the mutant could make her move against Carol and steal her powers and memories. This could take a psychological toll on Carol that will play out over the course of the movie. Later on, it could culminate in an epic superhero showdown between the two powerhouses.

Captain Marvel 2 Could Include X-Men’s Starjammers

Rogue may not be the only 1980s Carol Danvers story that Marvel could draw inspiration from for the plot of Captain Marvel 2. There’s also the events that took place in her life right after the Rogue incident drove her away from Earth. As “Binary”, she found herself in the company of the Starjammers, a group of space pirates in X-Men comics. The Starjammers are typically composed of Raza Longknife, Hepzibah, Ch’od, and Corsair, who all hail from different planets. Their leader is Corsair, a human who was abducted by the Shi’ar years ago and forced into a life of slavery. Interestingly, Corsair’s true identity is Christopher Summers, the long-missing father of Cyclops. With Corsair and the Starjammers, Carol shared several adventures in space before eventually returning to Earth.

It could be that the Starjammers exist somewhere in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And, it’s possible that they’ve already met Carol. In fact, they could have teamed up at some point in the past. The Starjammers can be used in Captain Marvel 2 to help explain what Carol was up to between Captain Marvel and Avengers: Endgame. It’s difficult to imagine Carol staying with the Skrulls for over 20 years, so after helping them find a new world, she likely moved on and encountered new people. Like her comic book counterpart, she could have spent a large chunk of time traveling in space with Corsair, Raza, Hepzibah, and Ch’od onboard their ship. If so, the events of Captain Marvel 2 may force her to call on their help once again. Whatever threat she’s facing in the movie could require Carol to rely on assistance from a team of her own.

How Captain Marvel 2 Can Setup The MCU’s X-Men

The presence of Rogue and the Starjammers in Captain Marvel 2 would give Marvel the tools it needs to bring the X-Men into the MCU in Phase 5 or later. Rogue, especially, would hand the MCU’s first X-Men movie a major team member. Though she could be utilized as an antagonist in Captain Marvel 2, a heroic turn could be teased at the end. Her conflict with Carol could result in Rogue looking for redemption as a superhero. If the movie ends with her still having Carol’s powers, she could use them for good in the MCU’s future. What happens to Rogue in Captain Marvel 2 can not only determine what kinds of powers she’ll have, but it can also define her arc in X-Men.

The Starjammers, on other hand, could be instrumental in crafting the backstory of a hero who stands a good chance at being the most important hero in the X-Men’s corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As previously noted, the leader of the Starjammers is the father of Cyclops. While just the inclusion of Corsair alone in Captain Marvel 2 would lead to a great amount of hype for Cyclops’ MCU debut, Marvel could take this a step further. Interactions between Carol Danvers and Christopher Summers could lead to reveals about his past. On top of name-dropping his son, Corsair could make a remark or two that hints at Scott’s mutant abilities. Talk of mutants when discussing Corsair’s family could be relevant to the story, given that another mutant, Rogue, may be involved as well. X-Men can follow up on this tease later when it introduces Cyclops as a boy or young man who lost his father due to mysterious circumstances. If this is the path the MCU takes, it can lead to a cosmic X-Men-Starjammers team-up (and a Cyclops-Corsair reunion) in an X-Men sequel.
