How FXs Alien TV Show Can Be A Proper Origin Story

An Alien TV show is in the works for FX and it’s the perfect opportunity for a proper origin story. The new Alien series will be helmed by critically acclaimed producer, writer, and director Noah Hawley, and Ridley Scott himself is attached to the project as well. While few plot details are available as yet, the show is scheduled for a 2021 release and is said to be set on earth, which is a departure for the series.

Hawley is known for creating the Fargo series (also on FX) based on the Coen Brothers movie of the same name. He’s also worked on Legion, a show set in the X-Men Universe. This bodes well for FX’s Alien TV series, as Hawley has proven he is adept in taking established storylines in a new direction. Plus, he’s known for his imaginative style and has proven himself capable of taking horror-slanted content in a successful direction.

Ridley Scott’s involvement is also a good sign that FX’s Alien is in good hands. Despite the generally lukewarm reviews of Scott’s Alien prequels, Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, fans remain eager for new content in the Alien universe. What sets this new FX series apart is the fact that it will take place on earth. While there are certainly references to earth throughout the Alien franchise, most of the action in the movies takes place primarily in deep space and on planets previously unknown to humans on earth. That said, the year in which this new series takes place is still unknown, which has led some to speculate it will be an origin story involving the Weyland-Yutani corporation. Overall, FX’s Alien feels like the perfect opportunity to dive deep into the origins surrounding the Alien franchise that has so far only been hinted at and relegated to a handful of brief flashback scenes.

How FX’s Alien Could Tell A Proper Origin Story

What’s interesting about setting FX’s Alien on earth is the fact that there are no xenomorphs or other alien hybrids on it. So far, the Alien franchise has kept xenomorphs away from earth, with Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) going as far as to kill herself to prevent the Weyland-Yutani corporation from getting its hands on the xenomorph queen growing inside her for study as a military weapon. This means that FX’s Alien could either be set early in the timeline before Ripley’s encounter with the alien species (which takes place in 2122) or it could tackle a more distant future.

It’s quite possible FX’s Alien could be about the creation and rise to power of the Weyland-Yutani corporation. Weyland Corp is founded in 2012 by Peter Weyland, the company that develops and becomes the leading supplier of synthetic humans, beginning with David in 2030. However, it does not become the Weyland-Yutani corporation until 2099, when Weyland Corp merges with the Japanese company Yutani Corporation. From there, Weyland-Yutani becomes the evil mega-corporation (a common science fiction trope) willing to sacrifice life and decency in the name of corporate profits. The new series could potentially tackle this merger and then follow Weyland-Yutani’s discovery of the distress signal coming from LV-426 and its pursuit of a viable xenomorph to study for military use. It would be interesting to see how events on earth play out before Ripley and her crew is sent—unknown to them, of course—to bring back a xenomorph to earth.
