How Guardians Of The Galaxy Games Rocket Is Different From The MCUs

Square Enix brings a different Rocket to Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy than the one seen in the MCU. While the two Rockets share similar attitudes and stay true to the original character’s fixation on technology, the two characters lead very different lives. Additionally, their origins with Groot and how they came to join the Guardians of the Galaxy help make each Rocket’s story unique from one another.

[Warning: Major spoilers for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy are below.]

In both Marvel’s GOTG and the MCU, Rocket is a cybernetically enhanced raccoon that was experimented on repeatedly. This event heavily impacts the characters’ life and outlook on the world around them after escaping their captors. Like all of the Guardians of the Galaxy characters, Rocket has a horrifying past prior to joining the team. Fortunately for Rocket, his past is what makes him a valuable member of the Guardians in both the game and the MCU.

Both Rockets feature high intelligence when it comes to technology, but the MCU Rocket still shows signs of being just as much of an animal as he does being sentient. This is particularly the case in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 when he grooms himself with his own tongue, makes ship repairs without wearing safety goggles, and has trouble understanding his depth perception of Ego’s ship after the team crashes on Berhert, referring to the “little man” that saved them. Additionally, Rocket doesn’t understand sarcasm early on in Vol. 2, which is an odd characteristic considering his intelligence has been cybernetically enhanced. These characteristics contradict his combative personality, and they aren’t shown anywhere in Rocket’s character throughout playing Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Marvel’s GOTG Rocket demonstrates characteristics of an animal, suggesting this version of Rocket may have additional behavioral enhancements.

Guardians Of The Galaxy Game Vs. MCU: Rocket’s Character Differences

How Guardians Of The Galaxy Games Rocket Is Different From The MCUs

While both versions of Rocket in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy and the MCU films show a bad attitude toward the Guardians, except for Groot, the two characters have distinct personalities that explain their emotional coarseness. Rocket in the MCU in the first and second Guardians of the Galaxy films acts out in an effort to push others away before they can get too close. Any warm or positive feeling toward Rocket made him feel uncomfortable, yet he continuously did things, like stealing the anulax batteries from the Sovereign, to draw more attention to himself. Without adult Groot by his side, Rocket’s character devolves from the first movie to the second.

Conversely, Rocket in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy shows animosity toward everyone because he doesn’t trust anyone. Aside from both Rockets sharing their experimentation history, one detail that separates the two is their life immediately afterward. Marvel’s GOTG Rocket actually became less trusting after he escaped the Kree scientists. He fell in love with another animal-like alien named Lylla, and she used him to hack a ship and left him to deal with the owner’s crew and consequences. After that, he explains in the game to Star-Lord that the only bio-organic creature he trusts is Groot.

In 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy movie, Rocket and Groot are already shown to have been working together for some time, just as Rocket and Groot in Marvel’s GOTG game have been. However, fans don’t get a full idea as to how the two met in the MCU, as the most detail that is given is that Groot is Rocket’s muscle. In the GOTG, however, Rocket stole numerous items from the Collector while intoxicated, including a transport ship and baby Groot. Groot’s home planet had already been wiped out by the time he and Rocket had met, the Collector found Groot among the rubble and planted his splinter. Additionally, Rocket’s beard in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy features a Groot bead to help keep it managed, further showing Groot’s importance to this version of Rocket.

Rocket and Groot joined Star-Lord before any of the other characters in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, but the two had been working side by side for more than ten years prior to meeting Star-Lord. After joining the Guardians, Rocket became the ship’s main engineer and tech developer for the team. While he takes a similar role in the MCU, Rocket originally met Star-Lord when he tried to capture Star-Lord for the bounty placed on his head from Yondu. Ultimately failing and ending up in a Nova Corps prison with the other Guardians of the Galaxy, everyone worked together to escape and unofficially formed the team to stop Ronan the Accuser. Additionally, the MCU’s Rocket tends to favor explosive devices whereas the GOTG Rocket shows a greater interest in tech at large.

How Rocket Helped Save The Galaxy In Marvel’s GOTG Vs. MCU Films

Both Rockets played significant roles in saving the galaxy, although the threats were very different. In Marvel’s GOTG, Rocket works with the Guardians of the Galaxy to stop Magus from taking over the galaxy. He conquers his fears of water and drowning, and without him doing so, the Guardians would have never been able to rescue Drax and save the galaxy. The MCU’s Rocket saves the galaxy as well, not once but twice. Additionally, the MCU’s Rocket develops an explosive device that kills the celestial being Ego.

One of the more drastic differences that may be overlooked between the two Rockets is their relationships with their respective Nebulas. In Marvel’s GOTG, Rocket reacts positively to the news of Nebula’s death, suggesting her infamy has impacted Rocket in some way. Even after learning that it was Gamora who killed her, Rocket still insists that she has done the galaxy a favor. This is a polar-opposite relationship between the two characters in the MCU, even at their worst. Nebula aids the Guardians in defeating Ego and escaping the Sovereign ships, and after Thanos’ snap only she and Rocket remain. The two work side by side under the guidance of Black Widow to aid the galaxy where they’re needed for five years before the events of Avengers: Endgame.

Furthermore, MCU’s Rocket is present in the Battle of Wakanda during Avengers: Infinity War, and assists Thor in acquiring Stormbreaker. He’s fought alongside all of the MCU’s heroes and was present when Thanos died in the original timeline as well as when Thanos traveled to the future. The MCU’s Rocket is also the only Rocket to time travel, but Rocket in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy may be the first, in time, to travel to other realities thanks to his curiosity of the Knowhere Cortex.
