How Powerful Ice Giant Loki Would Be

Warning: This article contains spoilers for What If…? episode 7.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe made Thor an only child in Marvel’s What If…? episode 7, which also turned Loki into an Ice Giant with different powers. What If…? episode 7 turned Thor (Chris Hemsworth) into Party Thor, making him an only child that especially appreciates a good time. When his father falls into Odinsleep and his mother, Frigga (voiced by Josette Eales), goes away, Thor heads to Earth to have the most epic party in the history of the MCU. A variety of MCU characters join him in the revelry, including Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum), Korg (Taika Waititi), and Howard the Duck (Seth Green). However, Thor’s parties have a history of getting out of control, so Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) ultimately calls on Frigga, and the God of Parties relents.

In What If…? episode 7, the MCU changes the events of its first films. Thor and Loki’s (Tom Hiddleston) relationship defined the early days of the MCU, with Loki’s jealously over his brother fueling his lust for power in Thor. Then, after Thor defeats him, the character focuses on conquering Earth in The Avengers. However, What If…? episode 7 takes all of that away. Instead, Loki grows up on Jotunheim as a Frost Giant prince. Surprisingly, he becomes friends with Thor. Loki even joins Thor’s festivities on Earth, palling around with the God of Thunder and enjoying some late-night Chinese food.

Loki’s life is entirely different as a Frost Giant. In the MCU’s main timeline, Loki is the God of Mischief and a master of magic. Frigga teaches Loki his magic skills early on, and Thor’s brother constantly uses his conjuring skills to deceive. However, Loki’s new life as a Frost Giant completely erases that history. He likely never learns magic from Frigga. Instead, he has very different powers as Frost Giant royalty.

As a Frost Giant, Loki has a particular set of skills. Frost Giant Loki is much larger than Asgardians and humans, towering over Thor in the episode. He has superhuman strength, a more brutish upbringing makes him a mighty warrior, and he’s resistant to injury. Like the Asgardians, he also has extended life and lives for thousands of years. Though he doesn’t learn magic from Frigga, the Frost Giants have magic of their own. Loki may still possess the power to create illusions, and he can also wield the Casket of Ancient Winters, which appears in Thor and can create massive snowstorms. Unfortunately, since he comes from a world of ice, extreme heat can be detrimental.

Loki’s similarities to the God of Mischief are perhaps the biggest revelations from the episode. As a Frost Giant prince, Loki doesn’t seem to have his obsession with power or any jealousy of Thor. Why should he? He’s already the heir to Jotunheim, after all. Instead, he calls Thor his “brother from another mother,” and the pair’s relationship seems better than ever. Though he doesn’t have his lust for power, Loki still retains his trickster mentality. He teases Jane Foster about Thor on the phone and has a generally mischievous nature, even making a giant slingshot out of St. Louis’ Gateway Arch. At the end of the day, though Loki isn’t the God of Mischief, he’s still Loki.
