How The Simpsons Retconned Homer & Marges Wedding

The Simpsons has been around for so long that it has made way for various plot holes and inconsistencies, most of these a result of the show’s floating timeline, such as everything about Homer and Marge’s wedding. Few animated shows have had the success and impact that The Simpsons has, which continues to grow with new seasons and more problems for the title family to face. Created by Matt Groening, The Simpsons premiered on Fox in 1989 and has since become the longest-running American animated series, also branching out to other media, most notably film and comic books.

The Simpsons takes viewers to the fictional town of Springfield to follow the many adventures of the title family as well as those of other notable citizens, of which some are close friends of the family and others are more on a villainous side, as are the cases of Sideshow Bob and Mr. Burns. Over the course of more than 30 seasons, The Simpsons has explored the backstory of the family many times, but as time doesn’t really pass in Springfield and characters never age, when the writers have to come up with new stories it’s easy to forget what previous episodes have established about the characters, making way for various plot holes and inconsistencies.

Although most of the main characters in The Simpsons have fallen victim to plot holes and more, the ones who seem to be constantly affected by them are Homer and Marge. The Simpsons has retconned how Homer and Marge met various times already, but there are also a lot of continuity mistakes when it comes to their wedding, when it happened, how it happened, and why it happened. In season 2’s episode “The War of the Simpsons”, Homer mentioned a “big bash” they had with “all the champagne and musicians and holy men and everything”, with Marge pointing out that was their wedding – but in season 3’s episode “I Married Marge”, it’s shown than in 1980 Marge got pregnant with Bart (without planning it), and when Homer found out, he proposed to her, but as they didn’t have much money, they married at a small wedding chapel across state lines, with Marge now visibly pregnant. In The Simpsons Movie, a brief moment from their wedding is shown, and it was a proper wedding instead of one at a small chapel (and Marge isn’t shown to be pregnant).

Another inconsistency in The Simpsons that makes Homer and Marge’s wedding more confusing is when Marge got pregnant with Bart. As mentioned above, in season 3 it was revealed that Homer proposed when Marge got pregnant, and as they didn’t have enough money, they stayed at Marge’s parents’ house. However, in another episode, they were shown already living in their now-famous house in Evergreen Terrace, where Marge told Homer she was pregnant with Bart, after which Homer ripped out his hair in shock, and so this shows they were already married by then. Whether Marge and Homer got married because of Bart or not, as well as whether they had a proper wedding celebration or a rushed, perhaps improvised wedding at a small chapel on the road is unknown.

The Simpsons shows no signs of stopping soon, so it’s very likely that this and many other inconsistencies won’t be cleared up and might even grow with more retcons and details that don’t add up. Although the reasons behind Homer and Marge’s wedding and how big or small the party was don’t really affect their arcs in The Simpsons, it’s definitely is another continuity mistake added to an already long list.
