How To Customize Safaris New Tab Start Page On iPhone

Apple recently made several big changes to the iPhone’s default Safari web browser and one that might go unnoticed is start page customization. The start page is what is shown when a new blank tab is opened. This jumping-off point can be loaded up with useful links from various sources and arranged to better suit each person’s unique preferences. Being one of the most used apps on a smartphone, making a browser more useful can have a big impact. Changing the layout and appearance also makes Safari more personal.

Apple calls a new empty tab in Safari the start page, since that is where the user begins a new search, types an address, or clicks a link to load a website. By default, the iPhone’s Safari start page shows a list of websites that have been marked as favorites. For some, that might be quite a long list. It’s a familiar sight, so much so that the ability to edit its layout might go unnoticed. To get started, there is an option in the upper right to ‘Show Less,’ revealing more links and options below.

In Apple’s Safari browser for iPhone, iPad, and Mac, a new empty tab can be customized with a background image and links from various sources to create a friendlier and more useful start page. The edit button is somewhat hidden at the bottom of the page, which might be quite long if there are a significant number of favorites. Scrolling down and tapping edit allows changing the layout, picking sources, and choosing a background wallpaper from a short list of defaults, or picking an image from the iPhone’s photo library.

iPhone Safari Links & iCloud Sync

There’s quite a large variety of sources for links to fill up the start page. Favorites is a special folder in bookmarks that can appear on the start page and it has its own ‘Add To Favorites’ share sheet option for quick access. Links also appear for iCloud tabs, which reflect tabs open on the user’s Mac or iPad. ‘Shared with You’ is a section with links that have been shared with the user via the Messages app. ‘Reading List’ shows all of the pages that have been added to that list for checking at a later time, while ‘Frequently Visited’ is exactly what it sounds like. Finally, ‘Siri Suggestions’ is a brief generated list that varies throughout the day and represents Siri’s guess of which website the user might want to visit next.

Any or all of these link sources can be turned on or off with a toggle switch. Sources can be rearranged, helping to make sure the most often used sources are moved higher up on the start page. Apple also included a Privacy Report section, which shares a brief summary of trackers that have been blocked, and tapping this summary opens up a more detailed report. If the perfect start page is achieved, the user might want to make the same changes on other Apple devices as well. This can easily be done by enabling ‘Use Start Page On All Devices,’ allowing the same layout and background image or wallpaper to appear on the user’s Mac and iPad.
