How to Find (& Catch) Hydreigon in Pokémon Sword & Shield

In Pokémon Sword & Shield, players can explore the Galar region to find, collect, and train Pokémon, with the goal of becoming the strongest trainer. Like other Pokémon games, gameplay primarily centers on creature collecting. Unfortunately, players will be disappointed to know that not every Pokémon in the game and anime is represented in Sword & Shield yet. Additionally, many Pokémon evolutions are not available in the wild for catching, and players can only collect those Pokémon for their Pokédex by training their pre-evolution variants to higher levels.

Hydreigon is a fan-favorite three-headed Dark and Dragon-type Pokémon players can evolve in Pokémon Sword. It is one of the rarest Pokémon species in the game. It does not freely roam in the wild of the Galar region, and players who opted for Pokémon Shield are not able to access this Pokémon without the use of online trading. For players who do have Pokémon Sword, Hydreigon is available upon evolving Zweilous at or after it reaches level 64. Here’s how to find, catch, evolve Zweilous into Hydreigon to add to the Pokédex in Pokémon Sword.

How to Find (& Catch) Hydreigon in Pokémon Sword & Shield

Zweilous is the second evolution in the chain that ends with Hydreigon. Players can either find Zweilous roaming in the wild of the Galar region, or they can evolve one from a Deino. Both Deino and Zweilous can be found free-roaming around the Lake of Outrage. Players will find the Lake of Outrage under Hammerlocke Hills in the Wild Area This location is home to several rare Pokémon, including double-dark and dragon types.

Deino is rare, only spawning 2% of the time at Lake of Outrage, and only when it is raining and the player is at level 50-52. In any other weather conditions and at any other level, players will not be able to find it.

Despite being an evolution of Deino, Zweilous can actually be found more often. Zweilous spawn in the Overworld near Lake of Outrage during sandstorms 2% of the time, as long as the player is at level 55-58. Outside the Overworld, they only spawn in the same location during thunderstorms 2% of the time, as long as the player is at level 50-52.

Once the player catches either Deino or Zweilous, leveling up will encourage them to evolve. Players may also be able to catch Hydreigon directly, but only during a raid.

Evolve Zweilous into Hydreigon in Pokémon Sword

To evolve Deino into Zweilous, players only need to level up once, as the evolution already takes place at or after level 50. There are no other special tasks.

To evolve Zweilous into Hydreigon, players will need a little more patience and training. Zweilous will only evolve into Hydreigon at level 64, meaning players will need to increase a minimum of 12 levels to get there. Players can use EXP Candy for a quick boost, but the fastest and easiest way to level up that many times will likely be to use Zweilous in battles. Players can also show Zweilous affection with Friend or Luxury Balls to level up faster. Eventually, they will be able to add Hydreigon to their Pokédex.
