How to Find (& Catch) Snorlax in Pokémon GO

Part of the fun of Pokémon GO is finding, hatching, and catching unique Pokémon in a player’s own neighborhood and cataloging them in their personal Pokédex. Players could spend hours seeking out the rare and fan-favorite Pokémon to collect via augmented reality. One of the rarer species in the game is the beloved Snorlax, a normal-type Pokémon whose gimmicks are an affinity for sleeping and a Garfield-like obsession with hating Mondays.

At one point in 2017, Snorlax was among the rarest Pokémon available in Pokémon GO. Things have changed somewhat since then, but Snorlax is still a rare find today. Snorlax is also a fairly powerful Pokémon, with impressive stats including a max CP of 3225. When players encounter it in the app, it may even be asleep, making for bizarre and adorable photo opportunities. During the Pokémon GO Fest 2020 event, players had the opportunity to catch not only Snorlax, but also its shiny form. Here’s how to best find and catch Snorlax in Pokémon GO.

Because Snorlax is a rare Pokémon, players will want to follow some of the conventional wisdom about finding rare spawns. Often, rare Pokémon will spawn in the same locations multiple times. Cluster Spawn locations also improve a player’s chances of encountering a rare Pokémon like Snorlax because there are simply more Pokémon there to find.

The most common places to encounter Pokémon, including rare spawns, are at various gathering places around a player’s neighborhood. The game was originally designed to have more Pokémon spawn in places where people might be out walking or gathering. Normal Pokémon also tend to spawn more near universities and in residential areas. Players will likely need to do some traveling to find Snorlax.

Under normal conditions, players will usually find Snorlax in the wild at random, just like any other Pokémon in Pokémon GO. There is also a slightly higher chance to find one on days that are partly cloudy. Once players have found one, they should check the same location again for a chance to find a second one.

Some rumors have circulated in the past that Snorlax is most commonly found on quiet, residential, suburban streets and near places that sell food, particularly bakeries, but this has never been confirmed.

Players can also find Munchlax, Snorlax’s pre-evolution counterpart, and evolve it into Snorlax using Candy. However, this is not the best use for Candy in the game and should only be used as a last resort.

Catch Snorlax in Pokémon GO

Catching Snorlax in Pokémon GO takes patience. Players have reported needing at least three Pokéballs to finally capture the sleepy creature in all its glory. The first two will not land, but if they hit, once Snorlax has been captured, the player only loses one ball total rather than all three. If any of the first few balls miss, those are lost and cannot be recovered.

Players can always improve their chances of catching Pokémon, especially rare spawns like Snorlax, by using incense and lures whenever possible. While lures are somewhat less effective, incense tends to encourage rare spawns. Incense and lures also both attract Pokémon, causing other Pokémon to spawn naturally.
