How to Get the Golfer NPC in Terraria 14

One of the big new additions to the 1.4 patch in Terraria is the ability to make golf courses and play on them. In order to tee off, however, players will have to find one of the patch’s new NPCs. The Golfer, an avid golf fan and possible brother to the Zoologist, is the ticket to hitting the greens.

However, if players want to hit some birdies, they’ll have to help the Golfer escape from one of the world’s deadliest sand traps. Keep in mind that golfing is a feature currently only in the desktop version of Terraria, but other players should hopefully get the ability to go clubbing soon.

How to Unlock the Golfer in Terraria

The Golfer is similar to NPCs such as the Angler and the Goblin Tinkerer in that they have to found and spoken to in the world to make them a potential tenant in a valid house. The good news is that there are no prior requirements for getting him to spawn. The bad news is that unlike the Angler, he spawns in a fairly dangerous location. The Golfer has somehow gotten his ball stuck in the Underground Desert biome, and there are plenty of antlions ready to tear new players apart.

Unsurprisingly, the Underground Desert is found under a Desert biome. Depending on how the world’s size, there may be multiple Deserts, but there’s always only one Underground Desert. Players can often tell which Desert has the Underground Desert because it’ll either have a huge pit leading into the ground or there will be tile-wide burrows in the sand. It’s a good idea to wear Gold-tier armor and bring along some movement-based accessories to deal with the various antlions underground. Not to mention how much more dangerous the area gets if the world is in Hardmode.

Once players enter the Underground Desert, they should be on the lookout for a dark-skinned man wearing a white cap and holding a golf club. Similarly to other spawning NPCs, he’ll spawn randomly in the area, so it’s possible to find him if players leave and return to the area later. To make the search easier, try buying a Lifeform Detector from the Travelling Merchant when he stops by. Simply having this accessory in the inventory will provide a display that’ll notify players about any rare enemies, critters, or NPCs that are nearby.

What do I get from unlocking the Golfer?

Players who go shopping with the Golfer can buy various clubs, decorations, and items from him. Be prepared to have at least three gold on hand in order to buy a golf ball, a cup, and some clubs. To unlock more of what he sells, players will have to tee off and play some rounds of golf. Instead of real life’s stroke system for playing golf, Terraria update 1.4 gives individual characters a golf score that increases as they play golf. The fewer strokes players use and the longer the shots, the more it increases. A character can get up to one billion points, but the Golfer’s entire inventory is unlocked at 2,000 points.

Most of the Golfer’s items are purely decorative or related to golfing, but there are two items that have more functional uses. The lawnmower, available from the start for one gold, is a tool that can mow regular or hallowed grass to reduce enemy spawn rates, prevent tall grass from spawning, and change the golf ball physics. However, the big prize comes from getting a golf score of over 2,000 and defeating Skeletron. Players with 50 gold can buy some keys to their very own golf cart! This mount doesn’t have any special features, but it’s the fastest land-based mount available before Hardmode, unless the player is on Master mode, in which case it’s tied with the Dark Mage’s Tome.

Terraria version 1.4 is now available on PC, Mac, and Linux.
