How Yahya AbdulMateen II Celebrated The Matrix 4 Casting

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II reveals how he celebrated getting cast in The Matrix 4. The upcoming film returns to the iconic sci-fi action franchise after the original trilogy ended in 2003, with Lana Wachowski returning as writer-director. Officially titled The Matrix Resurrections, Wachowski’s movie is scheduled to release simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max on December 22.

While early trailers have revealed that The Matrix Resurrections sees Keanu Reeves’ Thomas Anderson (a.k.a. Neo) back inside the virtual reality prison, how he got there remains a mystery, and fan theories have so far leaned heavily on casting. Carrie-Anne Moss is reprising her Trinity role alongside Reeves, but Abdul-Mateen II replaces Laurence Fishburne as Neo’s mentor Morpheus, causing many to wonder exactly when the film is meant to be set. A recent The Matrix Resurrections synopsis hinted that the Matrix is stronger and more dangerous this time around, but that Morpheus will once again be the red-pill-supplying catalyst that encourages Neo to break free of his illusory reality.

Getting cast as a character like Morpheus is obviously a big deal, and while on the Jamele Hill is Unbothered podcast, Abdul-Mateen II opens up about how he celebrated. The actor admits he isn’t usually the type to take his focus off work, but after calling his mother to let her know the good news, he knew he had to head out for at least a couple drinks. Looking back, Abdul-Mateen II says, he’s very glad he did:

I was forced to go out and celebrate that. Had some drinks. I did, I called my Momma and let her know, but I probably was about to go to sleep and get ready for press the next day; I had press for Watchmen or something like that, you know I’m always thinking ahead and trying to plan. I was definitely forced to stop what I was doing, to come out, to have drinks, to have shots and to have a good time. I’m so glad I did that because that’s what I remember most about that moment.

The American actor has seen his star rise over the past few years, and his should be an increasingly familiar face to audiences. In addition to taking on this classic Matrix role, Abdul-Mateen II plays the supervillain Black Manta in Aquaman and its upcoming sequel, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, and starred in the reboot-quel of the beloved horror movie Candyman. His role as Cal Abar/Dr. Manhattan in the aforementioned HBO series Watchmen, based on the acclaimed comic of the same name, earned him an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie.

While fans are surely glad to hear that Abdul-Mateen II took a moment to celebrate being handed the role of Morpheus, they might be more divided on his being cast in the first place. Fishburne’s performance in the original trilogy is so memorable that viewers could be hesitant to see another actor take over, while others are probably excited to see what an actor of Abdul-Mateen II’s caliber can bring to the character. Regardless of how they feel going in, however, everyone will be eager to learn just how a younger Morpheus is possible when The Matrix Resurrections finally releases.
