Hulk vs Ultimate Hulk Would the Original or Variant Win a Comic Battle

The near unmeasurable rage-based power of the Hulk has oftentimes been put to the test with the only true physical challenge being a fight against himself. Hulk has taken on the entire Marvel Universe throughout his comic book career, sometimes all at once, and has more often than not come out on top. However, that is just the Hulk from Marvel’s prime 616 universe, with questions circling about how he would fare against his universe 1610 counterpart. In a comic fight between Hulk and Ultimate Hulk, would the original or the variant win the battle?

In Marvel canon, the two Hulks have in fact fought each other one time when their respective worlds were on a collision course with each other, threatening total annihilation. In Battleworld: Ultimate End #2 by Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley, the Avengers and the Ultimates are working to find a solution to their worlds’ impending doom. Meanwhile, Ultimate Hulk suddenly crashes into a prison, putting both teams on high alert as to which Hulk that is and if he deliberately crashed into the prison or if he was thrown. Moments later it is revealed that Hulk was the one who threw Ultimate Hulk through the structure then pounced on his variant, continuing the attack. After a few splash pages of evenly-matched action, the Hulks are split apart with Hulk Buster Armor and the fight is over as quickly as it began.

Fans weren’t given a clear winner when Hulk and Ultimate Hulk fought, so to come up with a clear winner it is necessary to delve into their separate comic book feats. Beginning with Ultimate Hulk, who has far less comic book stories than his 616 counterparts, one can have a gauge on his power by looking at a fight he shares with the Hulk, and that is his battle against Wolverine. The circumstances in which the Hulk and Wolverine fought in the Ultimate Universe are similar to that of 616 in that Wolverine was asked by a higher authority to stop the Hulk. When Ultimate Hulk and Wolverine faced off, the Hulk literally ripped Wolverine in half, which doesn’t seem very impressive to Hulk’s standards but is actually a great representation of his immense strength and fighting ability. Not only did the Hulk catch Wolverine despite Logan’s superior fighting ability, but he was also able to rip him in half, breaking through the nearly unbreakable adamantium skeleton.

The 616 Hulk’s fight against Wolverine was not as impressive, and when comparing those two fights it seems as though Ultimate Hulk has it in the bag in his fight against the 616 version. However, when taking a look at prime Hulk’s comic book feats, his impressive history speaks for itself. The best example of the Hulk’s immense power in recent memory is World War Hulk by Greg Pak and John Romita Jr. While Hulk fights nearly every major player in the Marvel Universe and wins, his most impressive fight is his final one against Sentry. Sentry is basically a god in terms of his power level with strength that rivals that of a million exploding suns. The Hulk vs Sentry ends with the Hulk as the winner, withstanding all of Sentry’s might and coming out on top.

Given the obvious discrepancies in the two Hulks’ power levels, as well as the fact that 616 Hulk was definitely winning their fight before it was broken up, the winner of this comic battle is Hulk of the 616 Marvel Universe. The fight wasn’t close, the original Hulk would wipe the floor with Ultimate Hulk but that is only because Hulk has been through much more than his variant, so the potential for Ultimate Hulk is there. However, taking the characters as-is, the original Hulk would win against the Ultimate Hulk variant in a comic battle.
