Hulu has canceled its stop-motion animated M.O.D.O.K. series after one season.

According to Variety, the Marvel stop-motion animated M.O.D.O.K. series has been canceled after one season. The ten-episode season initially aired on Hulu in May 2021 and starred Patton Oswalt as the titular MODOK character, which stands for Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing.

The show followed the Marvel villain as he attempts to take over the world with his inventive high-tech weaponry, all while he tries to connect with his children and deals with a collapsing marriage. During the midst of the turmoil, MODOK also has frequent run-ins with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and is forced to deal with outside forces attempting to take over his criminal organization. The season ends with an alternate version of MODOK taking the character into a future where MODOK’s plans of world domination were successful. Not wanting to leave behind his family, MODOK vows to go back in time and save them from dying so he can truly “have it all.”

Along with Oswalt, M.O.D.O.K. featured vocal work from Ben Schwartz, Aimee Garcia, Melissa Fumero, Jon Daly, Sam Richardson, Jon Hamm and others. The series was created by Oswalt and Jordan Blum, who also served as executive producers. The series’ stop-motion was provided by Stoopid Buddy Stoodios.

M.O.D.O.K. was one of four animated Marvel shows announced for Hulu in 2019 as a group of series that were intended to lead to a crossover special, The Offenders. Other entries included Hit-Monkey, Howard the Duck and Tigra and Dazzler. The first season of Hit-Monkey launched in November 2021 and features vocal talent from Fred Tatasciore, Jason Sudeikis, Olivia Munn, George Takei and others. The show has not yet been renewed for a second season, while Howard the Duck and Tigra and Dazzler never made it to air.

MODOK has a long history in Marvel comics, first appearing in 1967’s Tales of Suspense #93. Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the character undergoes a surgical medical experiment to increase his intelligence. The experiment results in MODOK having an abnormally large head, requiring him to use a specially-made hoverchair for mobility. MODOK later kills his creators and takes control of the corporation that created him, Advanced Idea Mechanics (A.I.M.). He’s served as an antagonist to a number of Marvel heroes throughout the years, including Captain America, the Incredible Hulk, Iron Man and more.
