Memes have existed since long before the internet – Victorian photographers made versions of what- on the internet- became known as image macros by hand drawing the captions on photographic prints. In the 70s and 80s, after photocopying became more widespread and available, people would pass physical copies of to-them-hilarious captioned cartoons by hand or mail. The name itself was actually co-opted from an anthropological term that meant much the same thing; anything that carried an idea or the like between people by becoming a trend or fad.

It only stands to reason that with the internet’s ability to transmit data instantaneously between two points that it would spawn its own widely recognized fads. In the earlier days of meme culture, fewer internet memes had existed, and they tended to be popular for longe. It allowed some to become much more popular and widespread than those that came later. Many of them are still common to see floating around today- either in their original form or one of their derivatives.

Grumpy Cat came onto the meme scene sometime in 2012, and almost immediately became a sensation. Between her underbite and feline dwarfism, she looked permanently displeased with the world.

It was a good time to become an internet celebrity – the lifespan of any given meme lasted long enough that her owners were able to purvey their pet’s celebrity into a franchise of its own. She eventually had her own line of merchandise, books, and a Christmas special among other things.

9 Doge

Although the concept of dog being misspelled as doge already existed, sometime in 2013 the above meme itself exploded online. A Shiba Inu giving a very non-contrite side-eye to the camera, the original format overlaid the image with Comic Sans doge speak- similar, but not identical to, the earlier lolspeak.

It’s grown over the years, with Doge-themed merchandise, becoming the subject of a trademark battle, having a cryptocurrency named after it, and gained its own universe and lore. Celebrities and politicians have shared Doge memes on social media, showing just how far its reach was – it’s even influenced some of the biggest companies in the world,

8 Happy Cat

A grey British Shorthair, Happy Cat was floating around the internet prior to 2007, when the famous “I Can Has Cheezburger?” meme appeared. It was instrumental in launching the eponymous website, which in turn helped usher in the Golden Age of LOLcats and other similar animal macros.

Although the lolspeak used in this meme and other LOLcats has declined in usage over the years, the popularity of the image macro has never quite died off- and we’ll always have references from the media of the time to remind us of it.

7 All Your Base Are Belong To Us

This one goes all the way back to the late 1990s, meaning in internet years you practically need a meme archaeologist to examine it. Coming from a screenshot of the Sega Mega Drive game Zero Wing, the release of which dates all the way back to 1989. It was one of the first of what we’d consider a meme today, and it had an outsize effect on the internet of the time – it’s still widely referenced in movies that are set in the era.

Starting with a gif of the opening sequence of the game, the screenshot of the image captured an excellent example of the garbled English it was filled with. It seems that the game was rushed through translation, and this was the result; Sega takes a lot more care with bringing their games to English audiences these days.

6 Longcat

Longcat first appeared on the Japanese imageboard 2Chan sometime in the mid-2000s. Originally appearing held up by her owner to display her impressive length, her popularity on the internet grew. She found her way into macros and demotivational posters across forums and imageboards.

Eventually, users constructed an entire mythology around her; it was said that one day, Longcat would bring about the end of the world when she battled her anti-self Tacgnol. Her popularity has never entirely gone away – you can still buy merchandise featuring her, and once in a while from the long-forgotten bowels of the internet you can hear the whisper: “Longcat is looooooonnnnnggggg.”

5 Disaster Girl

Disaster Girl found herself to blame for an almost unending string of disasters over the year. A man posted a photo that he captured of his daughter smirking back at the camera like she was responsible during a fire training exercise, and later submitted it to a photo competition – which helped it gain traction.

Starting life as a series of demotivational posters, it soon morphed into users photoshopping her into the foreground of various disasters. Another early meme that hasn’t quite died off, she still pops up from time to time, being blamed for whatever the latest calamity is.

4 It’s Over 9000!

The popularity of a random badly translated phrase from a 90s episode of Dragon Ball Z can be traced back to its uploading to 2006 YouTube as an inside joke. Soon enough, it had made its way to image boards and in typical mid-2000s fashion, it caught on big time and for no apparent reason.

It quickly morphed into a catchphrase for whenever a user wanted to make sure everyone knew just how big or awesome they thought something was. It’s also been the subject of remixes, exploitable comics, and real-life trolling efforts.

3 One Does Not Simply Walk Into Mordor

I Had Fun Once It Was Awful (& 9 Other Classic Memes)

Originating from the Council of Elrond in 2001’s The Fellowship of the Ring, the meme emerged from a screenshot of Boromir when he pontificates about why it isn’t that easy to take the One Ring to Mount Doom – like most of the members of the Council wouldn’t know that anyway. It could be its last-minute inclusion in the script that made everyone miss that it was a little unnecessary to the plot.

It quickly became a snowclone – a meme that is easily exploitable but easily recognizable. Boromir found his way into thousands of situations over time, largely being photoshopped into various methods of moving or transportation that he insisted you couldn’t simply use to get into Mordor.

2 Demovitvators

With the increase in the usage of the internet, it was inevitable that real-world things would start to cross over. In the late 90s, the motivational posters ubiquitous in bland corporate offices made that leap.

Their original online form used them to make fun of the bland sentiments of the originals, by using images showing the exact opposite of whatever sentiment was expressed in the bottom pane. Soon enough, though, the internet made them into a widespread format for poking fun at things or expressing whatever random thing they wanted.

1 SOON.

SOON. showed up for the first time in its popular form sometime in 2007. The firs, or at least, the first to gain widespread attention was this angry cat seemingly plotting the downfall of an oblivious pup.

It eventually took two main forms: the first following the original format, a partially obscured being staring intently at while contemplating the downfall of something else in the foreground; the second being something peeking creepily out of a strange place to find whatever kind of thing the peeker is, implying that the intended victim is the viewer.
