In a galaxy filled with so many memorable characters, Obi-Wan Kenobi has remained one of the most beloved Star Wars figures from the very beginning. He was first introduced as the older and wise Jedi played by Alec Guinness before Ewan McGregor took over the role for the prequels and is set to return for a Disney+ series.
Though the character is known as a level-headed and serious Jedi, he still has some some pretty solid comedic moments here and there. From the original trilogy to the prequels, Obi-Wan has been known to deliver the occasional funny one-liner.
10 “I Hate It When He Does That.”
One of the best aspects of the prequel trilogy is seeing the early relationship between Obi-Wan and Anakin Skywalker develop. Though we know they will become bitter enemies, Attack of the Clones portrays them like a bickering buddy cop duo.
During one of the early action sequences, the two Jedi are pursuing an assassin in an aircraft. At one point, Anakin leaps out of the craft after their target. Obi-Wan can only watch him go and lament “I hate it when he does that,” like a frustrated parent.
9 “So Uncivilized.”
After seeing him as an older man in the original trilogy, it is a real treat to see Obi-Wan as a true Jedi badass in the prequels. McGregor seems to have a fun time playing the action hero and handles himself well in the lightsaber fights.
However, in Revenge of the Sith, Obi-Wan finds himself facing off with General Grievous without his lightsaber. Seeing no other options, he grabs a blaster and shoots Grievous dead. He then tosses the blaster aside with disgust and exclaims, “So uncivilized.”
8 “What I Told You Was True… From A Certain Point Of View.”
It’s unclear how much of this massive story George Lucas had planned out when he made the first Star Wars movie. For instance, many fans have pointed to Obi-Wan’s line about Darth Vader killing Luke’s father as proof Lucas hadn’t decided on the Vader twist.
However, Lucas at least tried to amend the moment in Return of the Jedi. When Luke encounters Obi-Wan on Dagobah, he questions Obi-Wan about this. Obi-Wan explains that the dark side turned his father into Vader and erased Anakin, so what he said was sort of true. It might not be intentional, but Obi-Wan trying to save himself with a technicality is pretty funny.
7 “We Still Have Half A Ship.”
Given the way the character is played by Guinness in the original trilogy, it can be a little strange seeing him crack jokes in the prequels. But McGregor gives the character enough gravitas to make it work.
When trying to save the Chancellor in Revenge of the Sith, Obi-Wan and Anakin find their ship heavily damaged and falling from the sky. When a large portion of the ship breaks off, Obi-Wan ignores it, saying, We still have half a ship.”
6 “Well, I Hope It Doesn’t Take Too Long. I Have Work To Do.”
Part of the charm of McGregor’s take on Obi-Wan is that he plays him with a sarcastic and somewhat sassy sense of humor. It is unexpected but it actually works surprisingly well, especially when facing danger.
After being captured by his enemies, Count Dooku plays it off as a big misunderstanding and promises to get Obi-Wan free immediately. Obi-Wan just seems annoyed and says, “Well I hope it doesn’t take too long, I have work to do.”
5 “These Aren’t The Droids You’re Looking For.”
The Jedi mind trick is one of the most powerful abilities they have, but there is also something inherently funny about it. Whenever a Jedi uses this on someone, they seem to do it in such a nonchalant way, making their target look foolish.
Viewers first see the trick in use when Obi-Wan and Luke are stopped by some stormtroopers who are looking for the C-3PO and R2-D2. While the stormtrooper tries to play tough, Obi-Wan just waves his hand and says the now-iconic line, “These aren’t the droids you’re looking for.”
4 “Why Do I Sense We’ve Picked Up Another Pathetic Lifeform?”
Before he becomes the experienced Jedi Master, Obi-Wan is seen as a somewhat reckless and impatient padawan student to Qui-Gon Jinn. This dynamic allows Ob-Wan to be the young troublemaker of the duo.
When he and Qui-Gon become stranded on Tatooine, Qui-Gon meets young Anakin Skywalker and sense some greatness in the boy. Obi-Wan is less enthusiastic about the new companion after getting stuck with Jar Jar Binks. He asks, “Why do I sense we’ve picked up another pathetic lifeform?” which seems a bit harsh.
3 “How Did This Happen? We’re Smarter Than This.”
The opening sequence of Revenge of the Sith depicts Obi-Wan in a sort of bumbling manner for some reason. He and Anakin keep making the wrong decisions and find themselves in trouble over and over again.
After getting caught in a force-field trap, Obi-Wan seems to recognize he is more incompetent than usual. He frustratingly remarks to no one in particular, “How did this happen? We’re smarter than this.” Even Jedi have those kinds of days at work.
2 “Who’s More Foolish, The Fool, Or The Fool Who Follows Him?”
Unlike pretty much everyone else, Obi-Wan does not completely fall in love with Han Solo as soon as he is introduced in A New Hope. In fact, despite working together, these two heroes really don’t see eye to eye.
After sneaking aboard the Death Star, Obi-Wan decides to try to shut down the tractor beam. Han goes along with the plan even though he thinks it’s pretty foolish. Obi-Wan retorts, “Who’s more foolish, the fool or the fool who follows him?”

It’s not often seen, but the Jedi mind trick can really be used to do a lot of good in the galaxy. We see an example of this in Attack of the Clones as Obi-Wan and Anakin follow a target into a club.
As Obi-Wan gets a drink at the bar, he is approached by one of the seedy patrons who offers him something called a death stick, which seems to be some sort of drug. Without looking at the wayward young man, Obi-Wan uses the Jedi mind trick to convince him he doesn’t want to sell harmful drugs and instead wants to go home and rethink his life.
