IDWs My Little Pony Comic Hits Huge Milestone With 100th Issue

IDW Publishing’s My Little Pony comic is hitting a huge milestone with its 100th issue. Rainbow Dash and her friends are coming together in a super-sized adventure. There appears to be plenty of magic – and friendship – for long-time fans to be excited about.

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic from IDW began publishing in 2012. The series tells original stories at various points in the timeline set up in the animated series of the same name. The animated series aired its ninth and final season back in 2019. Since then, beginning with the 89th issue, the My Little Pony comics have been telling “Season 10”, following the events of the show’s end. The issues tell about the new adventures of Rainbow Dash, Fluttershy, Pinkie Pie, Twilight Sparkle, Rarity, Applejack, and their friends in Ponyville.

Recently, IDW released information about the upcoming 100th issue. It will follow Rainbow Dash and some of her friends, though they are not the Mane Six. The creative team includes Jeremy Whitley, Andy Price, Brenda Hickey, and Katie Cook. My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic #100 will be a larger, anniversary issue with several variant covers. Variant artists for this special My Little Pony issue will be Andy Price, Tony Fleecs, Agnes Garbowska, and Amy Mebberson. Here is the summary from IDW:

In this landmark issue, Rainbow Dash and her companions Spitfire, Celaeno, Lyra, and Bon Bon find themselves in the Bird Kingdom, where old friendships are tested and a new, enigmatic enemy lurks in the shadows. Together, the ponies will unravel the mystery of the Knights of Harmony!

Following Twilight Sparkle being instated as ruler, the Mane Six have had to branch out their friendships and go on new adventures. Equestria – the land the ponies live in – is bigger than fans may have previously believed and friendships need to be forged and strengthened throughout the kingdom. Rainbow Dash, Celaeno, Spitfire, Lyra, and Bon Bon (who is also known as Sweetie Drops) are tasked with going to Parrot Peaks, the home of Celaeno. Celaeno is a parrot and a pirate captain, whose crew sails beyond Equestria. Previous issues have focused on Applejack’s new group going to Farasi, which is the homeland of Zecora, who is a zebra. There are many adventures still to be had and issue #100 will be a big part of starting a new one for these particular characters.

What IDW’s My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is doing is nothing short of remarkable. All-age comics rarely hit a continuous run that extends as far as one hundred issues, but My Little Pony is pulling it off. This is especially surprising since this is not an original comic, but one that is based on a Hasbro toy line that spawned into a much larger franchise. My Little Pony has a long history, first appearing as toys under the name “My Pretty Pony” in 1981 before rebranding as “My Little Pony” in 1982. Although the toys faced a few years of waning popularity, the line eventually made a comeback and developed a larger following as more multimedia projects were developed. There have been a few different My Little Pony titles published by IDW, but Friendship is Magic has proven to be one of the most popular. There has even been a crossover miniseries featuring the Transformers. Reaching 100 issues is nothing to take lightly and the readers in the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic fanbase have helped this series – and IDW – reach a monumental milestone worth celebrating.
